People commenting on songs you like

Alright, I guess everyone's been in this kind of situation: You got company, either your friends, your significant other or relatives and there's a song playing you really like. But suddenly someone comments on that song (can be whole albums aswell), this could either be a naive rant, praise or whatnot. Let's share some of the funniest and most interesting comments you've heard in your life. I'll start:

'This sounds incredibly porn-like' - Nadja about the intro of "Intruders" by Recoil

'I feel like throwing myself in front of a train now' - A friend of mine after listening to the Sonic Youth LP

'Oh my god, this sounds ugly' - 'Haha, I just had a deja vu' - My mother commenting on "Four Rusted Horses" by Marilyn Manson; my sister commenting on my mother's comment

'Whoa, this started just like the duck-tales theme" - Nadja about "Enslaved" by Diva Destruction

I was listening to one of my all time favorite songs, Slowdive's "Blue Skied an Clear", at a party, and this dude I didn't know said "the singer sounds like a fucing faggot." And my jaw dropped, as did my friend's, who was standing next to me.... And I finally mustered out a, "Wow... you're... a fucking idiot.." and the guy stared at me for a few seconds and walked off. And I haven't seen him since. Weird moment.

"is that alvin from the chipmunks?" - a workmates comment on atlas by battles whilst giving him a life in the postvan........ smug fucker walked the rest of the way!

I haven't really met that many people insightful enough to make interesting comments on songs/bands/albums, that is comments that weren't just extremely binary, 'that songs great, that song sucks'.

Well a few months ago I introduced a friend to Polvo and he really took to them. He got really absorbed into Today's Active Lifestyles and I burned Exploded Drawing for him. And he'd always make these comments about the band comparing them to Sonic Youth. He'd say roughly that Polvo was just the right amount of weird to him, and that Sonic Youth just went too far into weird territory. And that always baffled me because I always thought there were quite several SY records that are considerably tamer than Today's Active Lifestyles. Dirty and Murray St. being the only one that comes to mind.

He also has a really bad habit of making extremely gut reaction statements, that he doesn't really think through. Like after one listen of In Prism 'Beggar's Bowl is the best song Polvo has ever written.' or that GBV's Vampire On Titus was not a good record. In which case I told him to listen to it 50 more times, or until he liked it, whichever came first. And he had this to say about Sun City Girls' Space Prophet Dogon "I can't say anything positive about it." And I almost beat him up when he didn't like the last Gastr Del Sol record because it wasn't rockin' enough for him.

I was in gym class playing DDN and a dude commented "What is this shit playing? It's horrible. I'm going to put some Death from Above on instead"

...yeah dude, DFA met at a Sonic Youth show.

Count Mecha 09.17.2010 07:27 PM

hahahaha, that's great.

That reminds me of this time I was going to the movies with some people and the driver had Rites of Spring in his cd player and the guy riding shotgun kind of wrinkles his eyebrows and nose after a couple of minutes and says "What-are-we-listening to? This is horrible! Don't you have any Papa Roach you can play instead?" Those of us in the back lost it.

That is absolutely hilarious.

Personally, I've pretty much given up on recommending music to others. Whether it's Sonic Youth, Boredoms, or ICP... most just generally look confused.

one of my friends said the all the singing on DDN sounds like someone throwing up. and that they needed to tune their instruments. uh... they are tuned.

i know someone who said to me about joy division that they " were just trying to rip off the killers"................ i did rant repeatedly at them!

I've had about a thousand (maybe not) people talking about Hurt by NiN. "Ohh I love NiN's cover of Hurt!"

NO

That's so not true! Duran Duran were ripping off the Killers. Joy Division were ripping off Interpol.

Actually I think that's rather accurate. Damn.

Dr. Eugene Felikson 09.18.2010 04:46 PM

Has anyone else ever been lucky enough to catch Melt Banana live? They seriously put on one of the best, and most intensive shows I've ever seen.

Derek 09.18.2010 05:16 PM

I've seen them, I made a thread about it ages ago actually.

Hahaha, that's excellent. I've never heard that one before. I've heard the Interpol one zillions of times, but not Killers, that's awesome.

Semi-on topic but more related to uneducated music listeners making bonehead mistakes like this one. In my senior year of high school, my english class was down in the computer lab to type up these book reports or some paper we had to write. And if you got finished early you could pretty much do whatever you wanted for the rest of the period. Well there was this guy listening to some music he had downloaded that he brought in. A couple of friends and I decided to go talk to him about it, because we liked what he was playing.

On the particular instant we walked over there, some Led Zeppelin song was on, I can't remember specifically which one, Rock and Roll I think, something from IV. So my friend says to him "Hey Cody, you like Led Zeppelin too? This track is great, IV is my favorite record of theirs." something along those lines.

Cody then crooks up his eyebrow and kind of deadpans "This isn't Led Zeppelin."

"Uh yeah it is. That's Rock and Roll right there."

"No it's not. This is Van Halen."

"WHAT? No way man. That is not Van Halen. That is CLEARLY Led Zeppelin."

Then he gave us one of those you know (man, how much of an idiot are you?) looks and then pointed at his open Windows Media Player to the current song title for his irrefutable evidence.

"Look...Van Halen."

I don't know how but the song was mislabeled as Van Halen, uh Atomic Punk I think.

We tried to convince him that it was really Led Zeppelin but he was unmoveable, dead set convinced that it was really Van Halen. I didn't know what to say to him. I mean, how to do convince someone who confuses two of the most famous bands on the planet?

Saw 'en last year, I think I posted some pics In a thread around here. Amazing show, loved every second.
Oh yeah they did songs off the second half of bambis dilemma(mxbxlite?) but that shit. Was awesome! I forget the songs name but he song after dog song was so fucking intense live!!!

Dr. Eugene Felikson 09.18.2010 07:44 PM

Sorta back on topic...

I once tried showing my father Eraserhead. 15 minutes in, he informed me that people would think I was retarded if I ever tried showing it to anyone else. He then drove up to the video store, and rented Big Mama's House 2 - which he loved.
