Jean Michel Jarre or Vangelis?
|
No Clannad option?
|
no, clannad were a different thing entirely - as well you know.

The mid to late 70's was dominated by punk rock, completely overshadowing the enormous strides being made in electronica by Vangelis. It's funny to think of someone buying Spiral by Vangelis rather than Never Mind the Bollocks by The Sex Pistols. Mind you, his previous release, Albedo 0.39, did reach number 18 in the UK charts. Here's a taster.

Didn't Johnny Ball use that for one of his tv programmes? It might have been 'Think Again'.
Edit: it's not the same but you can definitely feel the influence. |
Jarre!

You can say that again. |

Wakeman seemed to overplay the virtuoso angle quite a bit. Jarre did too but not quite to the same degree. Watching that clip I get the feeling the audience were more into the dexterity of Wakeman's fingers than anything particularly to do with what was coming out of the speakers. |
vangelis ftw
|
Both rule.

who did the Fletch soundtrack? I go with that guy.

Vangelis has some pretty amazing stuff. A lot of cheese, but definitely some worthwhile ,aterial there.
Plus that 666 2xLP by Aphrodite's Child is a masterwork. |
666 + blade runner soundtrack = vangelis no contest
jarre is a straight up foo' by comparison. |
2 completely different artists to compare. vangelis great whta he does but jean michel jarre is a true genius in how he brings such old equipment together and launches it into life. admittedly his older work beats his new work hands down but he is truly an inspirational figure in a genre which can often be said to be cold and impersonal.
oxygene, equinoxe, magnetic fields, rendezvous, his live material and shows, deserted palace, geometry of love, and certainly zoolook are untouchable. the comparison to vangelis is unfair. so leave the chinstroking musos aside..actually chin stroking musos should certainly regard jarre as one of the finest musicians ever. |
get this dvd somewhere and watch it...fantastic stuff....
other 4 parts of it on youtube as well.... |
watch jarre's "oxygene 8" video on youtube, I caught it on MTV AMP the other night and it's probably my favorite video ever. his album "the essentials" from 2004 is really the album.

a better question might be:
jean michael jarre or klaus schulz? I'm going to have to go with Schulz. |
Schulz.
