Deadwood

It's brilliant, that goes without saying, but did cowboys actually swear like that for real back in the Wild West days?

StevOK 12.31.2009 05:42 PM

Yes, and so did sailors.

They were far removed from the "morals" of normal society, and had no one to be "polite" around. And virtually all swear words as used today were used the same way back then.

In my opinion Deadwood is the best western ever made. The writing is equal to Shakespeares! It's that fucking good. :)

"George Hearst" frightened the hell out of me. He was SO sinister. And the mysterious "Pinkertons" seemed to instill a fear in the characters.

I believe there is an interview with Milch on one of the boxsets where he says he used contemporary curse words as emphasis, because their language then may have been rough but saying "damn" then would be equal to our contemporary "cocksucker" now - so they didn't actually swear like a bunch of ghetto rappers back then. Many cowboys were quite literate and well spoken.

If you enjoyed Deadwood and haven't read any Louis L'Amour you're missing out, I'd recommend any of the Sackett books to start.

fucking stupid career move to end that show

The last episode of season three was edge of the seat, nailbiting stuff. I was expecting a climatic, epic shootout between George Hearst's men, and the men Al Swearengen hired, but it ended like all the other episodes did, like there was more to follow, but it wasn't to be, tragically. :(

I must also mention the brilliant score and the pieces of music that was played when the credits rolled at the end of each episode. :)
