asp's classic albums # 70: felt - forever breathes the lonely word

FELT "FOREVER BREATHES THE LONELY WORD"
Creation, 1986

This band reminds me of a more listenable, more interesting version of the Smiths, and one I'm obviously very fond of, since you're not going to see me posting any Smiths "classic albums" posts. That's really the best way to describe this stuff, and it's not a very interesting description for it, but the similarities are there. So-called jangly guitars and metronomic beats and sad pop classics. Really interesting and highly musical, really enjoy this shit, who knows you might too.

34mb or so:

I worked out Penelope Tree on guitar the other day. I've been meaning to check out their stuff since I heard that song.

Felt are easily one of my favorite bands of all time. I like the Deebank-era stuff best, but truthfully I enjoy all their albums (well, except for maybe those two "jazz" LPs they made) and have been a big fan since about 1986 or so. Crumbling The Antiseptic Beauty, The Splendour Of Fear and Poem Of The River are probably my favorite LPs.

definitely didn't expect to see this record discussed here. beautiful record, definitely their best. i do like the early stuff too, as Deebank is a totally underrated guitarist, and the addition of Ainge changed their sound. about the only Felt record i don't like is the last one; i can even get through their jazz noodly stuff.

'wave crashed on rocks,' 'grey streets,' 'september lady,'....damn there are some awesome songs on here, and Lawrence's lyrics were never better.

felt is one of those bands i think i need to check out yet always forget.

Good pick, it's an awesome record.

Pretty surprised that this album got an ASP classic album pick.

idk. I never got into this album or this band in general, and I'm a pretty big sucker for a lot of 80's "jangle pop."

narlus 10.13.2009 04:17 PM

imo it's a lot different from jangle pop.

I'm downloading now.

anyone peoples got any of their 'jazz stuff' you're are talking about?

narlus 10.14.2009 07:48 AM

train above the city is one of those...it's like electric keyboard jazz you'd find playing in a mid-level chain hotel lobby.

A friend made me a CD with that album and Me and a Monkey on the Moon, and I have to say...I didn't really like either of them as a whole.

But Forever Breathes The Lonely Word had more good songs.

My rough order of preference:
