is he playing "mote?" did they play snl that night and he's just doing music to lead to a commercial?, did he sit in with the snl band?, did he drink too much and mistake snl for a sy gig?

That video is from a show called "Night Music". They also played Silver Rocket. Both of those are on the Screaming Fields of Sonic Love VHS.
