I adore Johnny Thunders, and that's something that I can only honestly say about a select few musicians. His guitar playing conveys more emotion than Eric Clapton could ever dream of. It's too bad he didn't make any other solo albums of the same caliber as So Alone (yet, I still treasure all of the recordings of his that I have). There is not one bad song on that record. A few years ago I read Nina Antonia's Thunders biography In Cold Blood, and on the back cover of the book there is this great Morrissey quote: "The New York Dolls ruined my education." I don't know if they ruined mine completely, but to a 14-year-old kid they could be a pretty big distraction. I guess you could say they were the first band associated with the punk rock scene that I ever listened to. Before them, I didn't even listen to the Ramones. The Dolls really did it for me. My whole interest in that music scene really boils down to them, the Stooges, and Richard Hell. I honestly don't know what I would be like without them. |
Trash!
yeah, i love the dolls. |
Trash & Personality Crisis are probably their two best songs
Buster Poindexter, anyone? heha sort of influential & all, but yeah, Johnny Thunders solo is better, but again, I could really give a flying fuck |

Oh, yeahh, baby. i have shared this feeling ever since 1974 when I plunked down a hard-earned 5 dollar bill for my first copy. I've since repurchased the first and second albums on CD and reissued vinyl. Nice, nice, nice band. A nice bunch of boys all playing some pretty little songs together. |
You should check out the documentary "New York Doll" about Athur "Killer" Kane. It is pretty interesting and sad. It documents the reunion of the original surviving NYD playing at Morrissey's music festival in London.

Yeah I seen that film "New York Doll" too it was brilliant
|
Thurston talked about that film about the bassist in a recent interview the "prog talk" am radio one
so you got a recent doc & you got T talking about them & SY did a cover once & so, as a result, the new york dolls will always get topics started about them here they have in the past & they will in the future... fucking lowest common fucking denominator regurgitating robotic automatons anyone heard their new Johansen & Sylvain reuinted & it feels so good platter? I bet it sucks. |
i just got into the dolls b/c "scrooged" is my favorite movie ever?
i never thought of that connection....... |
Most people probably don't, especially if they were listening to the Dolls before Sonic Youth.
|
The New York Dolls were pretty good. For a glam band.
|
Just kidding. They were good for any type of genre.
