From the Daily Texan...
Quote:

After releasing one of the most powerful and exciting records of last year, Mexico?s XYX will now take on the United States. The duo, which recently cleared up some visa issues, has chosen Austinites as the first American audience to experience its special brand of frenzied, acid-soaked punk rock in person.

Last year?s Sistema de Terminaci?n Sexual found each of the band?s short bursts of song bombarding the listener with explosions of free-form drumming, ratty bass lines and a voice that fluttered between ethereal melody and a wild shriek. While the music may be described as punk, it is impossible for any standard song structure to contain the chaotic power of XYX.

Drummer Mou Ortiz?s manic, unhinged drumming constantly tumbles out of control, and Anel Escalante?s sinister bass riffs shove things in unexpected directions, daring the listener to accompany her on a ride through the puddles of delay and reverb forming around her strangely cathartic vocal howls.

What makes this deranged set-up great is what lies underneath the chaos. The kids of XYX are amazing musicians, keenly aware of what they are doing. The banshee-like vocals are actually beautifully crafted Spanish couplets, the distorted bass lines are buoyant and infectious, and the drumming is some of the most forward-thinking stuff being put to record today. The combination of this proficiency with their wild and loose playing style creates a battle between the beautiful and the broken, adding an intense dimension of transcendence when the two coalesce into sublime, somehow perfect peaks.

These peaks make XYX?s live shows a true spectacle. Pushing both physical and sonic boundaries, the band flails, screams and leaves battered delay pedals begging for their lives. It seems that it is only through this entropic action that the band?s songs grow to their full potential, making their concerts the true height of their sound. Thus, there is no reason not to attend the first U.S. show of what is sure to become one

Great band, really nice people too. I've played with them a couple of times here in Austin, they killed it the last time I saw them like 2 months ago. Really dig their side project Penetration Cosmica too.

I leave to pick 'em up in two days!

DJ Rick 07.20.2009 03:36 AM

I'm about to go pick up this band at the San Francisco airport in a few hours, and I've FINALLY finalized the tour schedule.......

XYX, from Monterrey, Mexico, throughout the state of Califas, Áztlan--California, dig?--from Monday, July 20 through Tuesday, July 28. XYX are a tremendous two-piece noisepunk unit of awesome fury and femininity who combine aggressive, relentless pummelling action with partyhardy pulse and creative effects sorcery that adds a psychedelic edge. Sorta kindred to The Mayyors in that sense! Their first 7" was released last year on SS Records label and topped many year-end faves lists across the garage/art/weird/punk underground. Their newest 7" is just as stunning and just arrived to me in the mail a couple days ago, and we are bringing it on tour.
