Latin American/Spanish Experimental/Avant-Garde/Underground music...

Can anyone recommend me some music under this broad umbrella term. I have been looking around for something in this area for a while now, and so far have drawn a solid blank. I'm particularly interested in the 60's and 70's.

If anybody has any ideas I'd be really grateful.

Contemporary stuff is cool too...

i shall ask my friend who compiles stuff from mexico, he has knowledge of psych bands fusioning free jazz with son jarocho and stuff.

here's a list of contemporary stuff that ranges from drone to noise to more academic "electroacoustic".

cornucopia
manrico montero/la orquesta silenciosa/karras
eye noise project
(((vlüba)))
guillermo galindo
christian galarreta
hybrid frequency
armenia
lapatentependiente
piscis
terrortank
augusto palma
the new parallelogramers
amniosis

http://www.geocities.com/a_courtis/

you should check out the latinaemricarpet album on sublime frequencies. its reallu great folk/psych stuff from latin america.
a quick google search will give you a download link.

also os mutantes if you are already not familiar with them, along with the whole tropicalia scene, and especially the genre defining "tropicalia" album

ybag_girl 06.13.2009 07:16 PM

you should listen " los jaivas", from Chile http://www.myspace.com/jaivas, you listen the album Alturas de Machupichu is a great

60s 70s hmmm

look for tropicalia

and os mutantes as yu herd

and hm there as this peruvian krautrock band called, hm, eh, what was it...

i forget man sorry-- too much beer hm... wait...

for 60s protopunk check out LOS SAICOS
and late 60s also was a psych band called TRAFFIC JAM they sang in spanglish about MEZCALINA (mescaline)

from argentina i think SPINETTA is the man but who knows

also pedro aznar tho he's more jazz (great bassist)

fuck i cant recall that krautrock band

wwas it EL POLEN? i do not recall

Everyneurotic 06.13.2009 07:36 PM

shit, i forgot reynols!!

i hesitated to add los llamaradas because they aren't that avant-garde, they are more garagey, the exploding now! is definitely experimental, take the sky not as much.

los saicos are fantastic, but i wouldn't call them experimental; if you're going down the road of latin american garage, then saicos fellow countrymen los york are cool. as for great mexican psych, la revolución de emiliano zapata and los dug dug's shall be a good place to start.

as for really fun jazz/danzón with attitude, check out los zochimilcas.

i forgot to mention I/C/O/C and monosodic ;)

!@#$%! 06.13.2009 07:37 PM

reynols si pero no queria 60-70s?

Everyneurotic 06.13.2009 07:41 PM

si, pero vale la pena mencionar contemporaneos, no?

i have a little project that has to do with the documentation of the tradition of experimental music here in mexico.

!@#$%! 06.13.2009 07:43 PM

sí sí...

Everyneurotic 06.13.2009 07:51 PM

a site about electroacoustic/sound art people from mexico, just navigate with caution, because good composers like guillermo galindo are mentioned right next to shit like arthur henry fork.

http://www.artesonoro.net/index.html

also, if you're into voice artists, check out juan pablo villa.

as for free jazz, germán bringas, remi alvarez and melodiklasta are good.

toxic johnny 06.14.2009 02:58 PM

Wow plenty to get my teeth into there... thanks guys.

Forgot to mention that I'm already familiar with Reynols, Os Mutantes, Los Llamarada and Tropicalia, etc, etc.

Really digging Manrico Montero and Cornucopia so far...

Everyneurotic 06.14.2009 08:33 PM

a word of advice on manrico, avoid estructuras de la tarde; that "band" sucks.
