best movie of 09 probably

cryptowonderdruginvogue 05.14.2009 05:05 PM

SICK

demonrail666 05.14.2009 05:11 PM

I really liked the novel. From the trailer, the film seems to be one of those 'not as bad as it might have been' affairs that I increasingly think is the best anyone can hope for these days.

girlgun 05.14.2009 05:59 PM

ugh. intense. seems to be a lot more of the "mom" role than there was in the book, but i'd do the same if charlize were playing mom.

davenotdead 05.14.2009 06:00 PM

the director is John Hillcoat. who did The Proposition. which was a great film.

EVOLghost 05.14.2009 06:02 PM

So....this movie does look pretty coo....and CHARLIZE THERON SMOKES POT!

just a little fun fact.

Kuwa_Slayne 05.14.2009 07:30 PM

Loved the book and I've been looking forward to the trailer. So far it looks pretty good--I hope they don't pull any punches.

I read that the mom is going to have a bigger role (which seems obvious from the trailer). Not too surprised there. I get the feeling that they might try to explain the catastrophe that has led to the demise of civilization. I hope not, although whenever I recommended the book to people their major complaint was not enough background info.

demonrail666 05.14.2009 07:41 PM

That's what I liked about the novel, the fact that it didn't get all tied up with details. It's the same with The Stand, you're given some information, but not so much for it to become that big a deal.

Cinema needs to give up on its current obsession with explaining everything.

amerikangod 05.14.2009 07:42 PM

I kept rewinding it and pausing it to see if that was a naked man or woman at 2:13.

It was a man.

joe11121 05.14.2009 07:57 PM

Looks like it'll be a cool movie. I wanna read the book now.

floatingslowly 05.14.2009 08:12 PM

fuck it makes me depressed just lookin' at it.

Totally agree. Unfortunately there are way too many people out there that need their hands held through everything.

"The Road" has been finished for awhile and they bumped up the release date so that it could be a contender for academy awards (which I could care less about). It wouldn't surprise me if they try to pander to the masses by at leats alluding to some explanation for the fall of civilization.

As a side note I recently finished "Child of God" by Cormac MacCarthy. It was a hillbilly-necro freakout. Pretty quick read and good.

demonrail666 05.14.2009 08:42 PM

I was going to make the same point. Because its budgets are now so high, Hollywood is forced to pander to a kind of mass thinking that seems increasingly devoid of intelligence. It really is beyond a joke at the moment.

I loved The Road but was put off trying any of McCarthy's other books after reading 'No Country for Old Men', which I really didn't like at all. 'Child of God' sounds far more interesting though. I'll give it a go.

Looks good. I've wanted to read the novel based on many recommendations, but the bad taste in my mouth from All The Pretty Horses hasn't gone away.

davenotdead 05.14.2009 09:18 PM

I've read

The Road
Child Of God
and
Outer Dark

all 3 kick ass.

child of god being my least favorite... though outer dark lags a bit in the middle, the ending is fantastic

Kuwa_Slayne 05.14.2009 09:19 PM

Outer Dark is next on my list if I can ever make it through Blood Miridian.

davenotdead 05.14.2009 09:23 PM

i can't find blood meridian at the library and its not even in the database... I figure it may have been outlawed/excluded on purpose...

it is exceptionally graphic, is it not?

Kuwa_Slayne 05.14.2009 09:32 PM

Yeah it's pretty graphic for sure. It's a demanding read. It's a bit hard to follow unless you give it your full attention.
