German Punk

Ok, in light of my recent obsession with everything teutonic, can you please reccomend some German punk bands which offer the following:

- Sexual
- Weird
- Obscure
- Confrontational

I know next to nothing about German punk, so I will appreciate your input, thanks.

I think D.A.F. could qualify as sexual, confrontational, perhaps occasionally weird, but they are not obscure and I think you know them already. Also, I realise it's debatable to consider them as punk or really connected to punk.

In fact, I'm afraid the names that come to my mind are rather post-punk / Neue Deutsche Welle (German New Wave), I don't know if you mind that… If you do, you can always ignore what you feel is irrelevant.

Judging from a previous thread you started, I believe you are anyway already aware of the early 80's Berlin scene (Malaria!, Die Tödliche Doris, Sprung Aus den Wolken, many Neubauten-related incarnations, and others… if you want, I can upload next week the CD compilation that went with Berlin Super 80 DVD I mentioned once here, because I believe it is out of print now)…

Otherwise, I can also recommend Palais Schaumburg: in any case, i like their first self-titled album and the EP that gather their early singles (it includes the song "Telefon") – their sound is hard to describe and might be far from punk, but you could always try… Also, I listened not too long ago to "Autismenschen" by the band Alu – some sort of synth punk, I listened to the album only twice so far, but I enjoyed it and you might enjoy it as well…

Then there are some more classic German punk bands, from which I only know a few random songs: Abwärts, Mittagspause, S.Y.P.H., Hans-a-Plast, Fehlfarben… But since I only know random individual songs, I cannot really recommend anything in particular – I can post some youtube links later on, though.

Oh I remember that I also have the album "Stürmer" by Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle: it's nothing super amazing, but it has a few catchy songs, and I could also upload that next week, as it's definitely out of print.

start a thread about this at termbo, you'll probably get more answers

sarramkrop 01.04.2009 01:54 PM

I think that I might have to do that. This thread is like the unwanted girl at a party thrown by MBV b-sides fanatics.

There's a friend of mine's new chap who talks through his fringe... really nice fella. I have an overwhelming desire to send him into the army though. Strange that.

sarramkrop 01.04.2009 02:32 PM

Maybe you should ask him if he'd like to fight against some Germans, then.

Well, D.A.F. and Malaria! are clearly my favourites out of the names I mentioned (and also the two I'm the most familiar with!). I have the feeling the others are less essential, but could possibly feed at least your current obsession with things Germanic...

Here you can find some more post-punk/NDW things (so again, slightly off-topic, perhaps):

http://square-dancing.blogspot.com/search/label/ndw

I did not download any of those, but I recognise some songs... There might some crap in there too, even the blogger suggests so sometimes...

I see Grauzone (from Switzerland) is also included: I would say they are also worth checking out. Also from Switzerland and with some songs in German, I also really like Liliput/Kleenex - I think they are relatively well-known, so maybe you know them.

His fringe? You mean he has long hair and talks with his bangs over his face?

al shabbray 01.06.2009 11:29 AM

already D.A.F. and Die ärzte are mentioned...
kind of not hitting the terms you wanted, but "Die Goldenen Zitronen" are some kind of intellectual prototype german Punkband. highly political/social criticism combined with lyrical twists and turns.

edit:

"Ton Steine Scherben"
!!!
How could I forget?
they cover almost anything you have mentioned, including gay love hymns everybody knows in germany. they started pretty trashy/extreme and kinda started to know their instruments better. Rio Reiser was their frontman, he also started a pretty succesful solo career afterwards. a lot of german punk classics, if not most of THE classics.

http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=UwE8dlRnsio
their most well known song I think. translated "destroy what destroys you!"

http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=sa0rpCgVLs4
even if you dont understand the language keep watching. its the TSS drummer talking bout capitalism and anti capitalism...till he, yes tries to destroy the table. that was german Television a few decades ago, hahahah
while grabbng the Mics he says: "I need the mics for some buddies who are in jail" buahahaha

http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=36aoxJYAtn4
mentioned love tune by rio reiser

http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=iM1SvcAfjeQ
the most succesfull track after TSS split up by Rio reiser Solo (highly NDW (New German Wave) influenced)
