classic albums, atsonicpark edition # 50: drive like jehu - yank crime

DRIVE LIKE JEHU "YANK CRIME"
1994, I think, Interscope right? Re-released by Swami in.. oh, I dunno, 2004 or so? That's probably the one I'd get, it has Bullet Train to Vegas and Hand Over Fist on it.

...

Okay, two words to get this album: New Math.

Two more words? Rome Plows.

Oh, you still want more of a description of this album? Okay... Two more words.. Super Unison.

This album rules.

Thanks to everyone who enjoyed these classic albums posts, I'm probably not going to do them anymore. There's still a good 1,000 albums for me to post about, but at this point most people don't care or I'm just preaching to the choir who already know about these albums or would hear them at some point anyway. Enjoy!

You could always do classic albums post about albums that are obscure. Like you said, these posts aren't really CLASSIC albums, but they're classic albums to you and some of your favourites.

And in the end, I have still not listened to this band. Yet I've listened to all the bands they're compared to.

atsonicpark 11.09.2008 10:17 AM

I've done some pretty obscure bands and the replies I get range from "Cool" to "never heard 'em" to "is this really a CLASSIC album?" The vibe I get is that if people haven't heard of an album or band, how can it be considered a classic? So, that's the problem with doing super-obscure bands/artists.

If people care about my reccomendations, they can see me post elsewhere outside of these posts. I also feel like I'm throwing my music tastes up in people's faces too much. Fuck it.

If anyone wants a real reccomendation.. and it's not too obscure... but I don't hear him mentioned too much.. I love everything Phil Niblock has done, I'm just now getting everything he's doing... it's amazing. If you like drone.

Well maybe classic album was the wrong phrase to describe these posts. I figured by this point people would know these posts were your personal choices anyway. Led Zeppelin made classic albums and I dislike them a lot, so classic doesn't equal good.

Not to mention that these topics DO make good discussion about the specific album and artist. People don't start threads and make discussion around here enough and these posts help the problem a little bit.

All it could take is not writing the 'classic' prefix before the name of the record, that's all. Personally, I like this record too, maybe I've listened to it 3 times in my entire life.

The thing with certain writing on this board, and with many music geeks in general, is that it seems like often one is genuinely enthusiastic about a band, but they make the mistake of trying to communicate that enthusiasm by writing or talking like an aspiring journalist, something that is bound to get you a lot of stick if you can't pull it off with some interesting points that stimulate debate.

Which I guess is your gripe with batreleaser and folks. I'm a shitty writer who can't write about music at all haha so I guess I don't have that problem.

schizophrenicroom 11.09.2008 10:39 AM

time for my two cents:

"luau" is SO fucking awesome.

You'd be surprised to find out that I don't have anything personal against that dude, it's just that he often makes a technical mistake in his writing, which is that of jumping to conclusions by making statements that have no veritable proof when you listen to a lot of the people he writes about.

Also, I have to admit that unfortunately his way of describing the music within lacks descriptive imagination, vocabulary-wise.

Derek 11.09.2008 10:47 AM

That's all true yes. But he is a nice dude and he has good taste. He has actually gotten me into quite a few bands.
