I feel smart when I listen to David Grubbs' solo LPs!

Not exhaustive in any way but geez these 4 LPs are PRISTINE GEMS:








You may post yr appreciation of the David grubbs solo output.
There could be another thread about his more experimental output, which is vast and sometimes unfortunately hit or miss.
However, let's concentrate on his songwriting oriented releases.

he';s great.

everything he's done by himself or with a band or with jim o'rourke collaborating with him is great.

the only one i really like from him is the spectrum in between

mmm that's weird cuz these 4 really sound alike as if they were meant to be a "quadrilogy" (did i get that right?).

well it's probably just an anomaly in his career as i don't really like gastr del sol either

never listened to any of his solo works, but gastr del sol is amazing of course. bastro as well - he was in that band, yeh?

i'll check those LPs out.

I have never heard a solo Grubbs record. I guess I just have no need, my Gastr Del Sol collection is more than enough Grubbs, but not enough O'Rourke, haha.

you should at least check out his 2008 release. its really good. at least most of it

^^ not his best if you ask me, but it's a grower as most Grubbs stuff.

nah seriously, with a few more listens this last Grubbs solo effort is really nice nice!

my friend ought me rickets and scurvey for my birthday. its amazing! really great.
rockier than optimist notes the dusk, but still really great idiosyncratic melodies

I was going to see him play tonight, but I'm not sure if I can be arsed. We'll see, I don't fancy the long journey back home.

it depends on the setting.
I saw him just once performing some obscure laptop wank with some woman doing some spoken word on top and it WAS boring.
dunno what he's doing live these days though. Solo with a guitar and samplers might be just be enough to promote the last LP. Tell us if you go there and report back please.
