media bias towards obama?

it seems that whenever i look at a newspaper or see the news/tv they always seem to want to know what obama is saying, what obama thinks etc.

now i am in no way in fovor of the other guy whatsoever but do you think that the media is biased in any way towards him? i feel like you are far more likely to open a newspaper and see something about bama than mccain. given that the media in america is so polarised is this hardly suprising?

akprodr 09.13.2008 07:33 PM

Where are you? I mean, if you're in Illinois, there will be more discussion about Obama; Arizona, McMaim.

Maybe you just happen to pick up the paper on the Obama news days?

It seems to me most of the things I see talk about both of them.

StevOK 09.13.2008 07:55 PM

I read some statistics that the media actually does more negative coverage of Obama than it does of McCain.

atsonicpark 09.13.2008 08:04 PM

Honestly, I don't watch television that much, but I kind of had the impression that Obama seems to get a lot more coverage, period... good and bad.

Dead-Air 09.13.2008 08:41 PM

Obama got a lot more coverage until McCain picked Palin for his VP and now it's all her.

Granted I'm going more by internet and NPR than anything else, because I don't even have cable tv. However, usually all of these outlets parrot each other.

It has nothing to do with ideological preferences either, and everything to do with novelty. Obama is the first black person to ever win a presidential nomination and so it was all about him for quite a while, because the alternative was to talk about McCain, "Well, he's old, and he wants to nuke Iran, ho hum..." Then McCain pulled a semi-hot looking redneck Alskan separatist chick out of his ass and now we have a bigger novelty. Obama is having a hard time getting noticed at this point, but we'll see if it lasts.

pbradley 09.13.2008 08:41 PM

Even if coverage was equally divided, you'd still have the probability that you would personally run into more material about one candidate than another. Just because the media might not be biased does not mean that your circumstances (i.e. political social circles, etc) as well as your own attention aren't biased.

And honestly I can see why a young black man would grab the media's imagination more than an old white man. I don't think any bias in coverage is at all politically motivated.

Inhuman 09.13.2008 11:50 PM

You barely hear anything about McCain in Canada compared to the Obama exposure. Plenty of people stickering up streets with Obama 08' stickers despite the fact that we cannot vote.
It really has become all propaganda now. So much hatin' that it's easy to picture Obama and McCain on Maury Povich.

Honestly I'm tired of people crying over bias in the media. The average American needs media bias in order to care about a subject and even then many still don't care. Even if we had a perfectly unbiased news source, no one would read/watch it. Those that care should buck up and deconstruct news, those that don't... well they decide American politics, now don't they.

sarramkrop 09.14.2008 07:23 AM

I'm surprised when things like these are presented as unprecedented facts, in this time and age.

"We are the conspiracy", as MES once said.

!@#$%! 09.14.2008 09:25 AM

the media is all about palin now.

if anything, the bias is not in favor of one candidate or another but in favor of whatever "sells".

like that lipstick on a pig comment-- even some fucking journos were saying that "oh the lipstick on a pig comment" instead of calling bullshit on the utter LIE of it.

if the press was fair, they'd come up & call bullshit when people lie-- but no-- instead they give equal weight to the truth & to bullshit. fuckem.
