Lets all stop looking at sexy skinny people and give it up for The Specials

I suppose I knew it all along, but I'm listening to their first album right now and have to conclude that The Specials really were one of the finest bands Britain has ever produced.

Songs like 'A Message to you Rudy' make as much sense now as they did in 1979. Probably even more.

I even like the later stuff. Free Nelson Mandela/ Racist Friend... it's all gravy.

demonrail666 06.15.2008 12:54 PM

Indeed. Probably the only band of their ilk from that period that came out with their credibility intact. Dammers was a total legend.

nicfit 06.15.2008 12:56 PM

they look pretty sexy and skinny.

Well they would do; they're brilliant!

lechaoscestmoi 06.15.2008 01:29 PM

who doesn't dig the specials?

great band indeed, better than the clash imo.

Tokolosh 06.15.2008 02:13 PM

Melt-Banana covered Monkey Man just the other day.
It says a lot. Good band.

sarramkrop 06.15.2008 02:18 PM

I posted that cover on the rare blah blah thread. They make a good job of it.

That was a cover, it's even older than that.

Weird, I was just listening to one of their albums. "Ghost Town" is beginning to bring on new relevance, and "You're Wondering Now" was my favourite song when I was 6.

uhler 06.15.2008 07:29 PM

one of the best bands ever!

demonrail666 06.15.2008 08:16 PM

They were unfortunately somewhat ghettoised by the whole Two Tone fad (which, with bands like The Selector and the too easily dismissed Madness, was one of the industry's better trends). The Specials though were a definite cut above.

As Lechaosestmoi says, a far better band than The Clash. Making similar points but in a far less irritating and contradictory fashion.

Rat Race :D

EMMAh 06.15.2008 08:23 PM

and Ghost Town.

o'connor 06.15.2008 08:30 PM

aren't they a ska band?

EMMAh 06.15.2008 08:34 PM

Pretty much, yeah.

o'connor 06.15.2008 08:35 PM

check them out. they aren't your run of the mill mid 90's ska punk band. two tone was basically it's own genre. not ska, not punk, just two tone.

The are, yeah, but if you've not heard them, don't let it put you off. Listen to something like A Message to You Rudy. At least give it a go.
