It's truly long overdue for The Ventures. People forget or don't realise just how influential that band was. Along with avant jazz popsters like Esquivel and Les Baxter, commercial jazz instrumentalists like Jimmy Smith and/or Wes Montgomery, and r & b icons Booker T & The MGs, they helped shape a lot of the psychedelic and folk-rock and avant-stuff that came out of the mid '60s. Also, by all accounts, they released a hell of a lot of albums and sold quite a few.
Cohen's a natural. He helped usher in the bleakness. The Dave Clark Five were huge in the early to mid '60s, but they haven't stood the teat of time--weren't radical enough and never stayed together long enough, I guess. Why don't they induct Madonna's major orifices instead of the woman herself...? Her mouth, vagina and anus could account for three of the annual inductees, while William Shatner and Milli Vanilli could round out the lot. That would make for an interesting induction ceremony--and great television. John Mellencamp--certainly not the worst pop-rocker to come out of the past 30 years; but hasn't he been abducted, er, inducted already, in the form of John Fogerty...? |
the hall of fame is a fucking joke.
