Geffen Records: Shutdown Imminent
Geffen Records: Shutdown Imminent
December 12th, 2007 | by Aidan Williamson Sources close to record label Geffen are suggesting that the company is facing huge layoffs at the end of the year which will be followed by a shut-down of operations. Geffen, which has featured artists such as Beck, The Cure, Nirvana, Rise Against, Sonic Youth, and Weezer on their roster is allegedly undergoing a ‘reanalysis’ of it’s status under the Universal Music banner. While some sources within the organisation point to a complete wind-up of the label, others point to the far more likely scenario that the brand name will be maintained by releasing certain releases and artists under the “Geffen” imprint. The functionality of the actual inner-workings of the label will be shifted elsewhere, perhaps being merged into the main wing of Universal. “Geffen would be shuttered in the way that labels like that get shuttered.” the source concluded. |
SEEEEEE? SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DOWNLOAD SY RECORDS INSTEAD OF BUYING THEM????
no, it's not funny actually, I guess a number of people will end up unemployed... :(.... |
uh well i don't download SY records and I do buy them but i also don't necessarily agree with your thinking... Alot of labels are still surviving and actually making a profit in this day and age, the story about Geffen is no surprise, this has been going on for that label for years now. Like any business if it cannot market itself and make margins/profits or whatnot then they are the ones should take alot of the fault, not 100% but the upper management at Geffen must take the majority of the responsibility for what is happening as they must have made some poor decisions in the past and recent past for them to be in this current position. And actually since Universal owns Geffen, I could see Universal putting pressure on Geffen to make these sort of decisions to make a bottom line... sad but this is the story of corporate america and the current economy situation in this country and the world for that matter.

Too bad, so sad. I'm sick of modern art.

modern art makes me want to rock out

We can all blame Courtney Love for not releasing The Year Punk Broke.
|
the year punk broke will now be in legal limbo forever, until courtney cunt love can figure out a way to make money off of her dead husband's footage
|
Isn't she already doing that? When is the next unreleased material coming out?
|
This sounds like a pre-cursor to the announcement that SY are "let go" from geffen's roster

Tony Platt (Producer; Bob Marley, AC/DC, Boomtown Rats, Iron Madian) recently visited my university to do a talk, and he was of the opinion that the main purpose of the huge record companies in the future will be to act as distribution networks. He went on to say that he thinks its a great time to be working in independent music as the labels are finding it ever more difficult to adapt to the internet age. The majors are running scared and often appear to be fighting the tide. On The other hand the more internet savvy small labels are actually making the internet work as a positive tool for them.
