favorite guitar/vocal/etc hooks
I don't know if I'm the only one that does this but sometimes I find a hook in a song that I absolutely love and have no idea of how to explain why. Like I'll listen to a rather average song just to listen to this hook and it gets me every time. I'm moved. Examples:
Mission of Burma's "Trains" - the vocal melody of find another way, show me, show me I kind of wish that made it more bombastic and repeat it a few times I always shudder when the guitar fuzz takes over at 2:40 on Dinosaur Jr's "No Bones" The no-fucking-around beginning to Minutemen's "Shit From An Old Notebook" is another big favorite. So funky and righteous that I can't listen to it in public without looking like an idiot. R.E.M.'s "Revolution" is pretty lame all around in my opinion but Mike's lyric The future never happened! blows me away. He just sounds so resentful to me when he sings it. |
MBV- When You Sleep

I mean a particular hook. A particular part of a song that grabs you far more than the rest of the song. Is there a particular hook in "When You Sleep"?
|
I love Mission of Burma, but that line find another way, show me, show me has always bothered me, probably because on the recording he's singing out of tune.
|
Yeah, I listen to it in the context of the song and it makes no sense. But I love it any way.

Right now I'm stuck on the chorus in 'Be Safe' by the Cribs, that one that features Lee. Sadly, Lee is NOT the best thing in this song, it's the chorus.
"I know a place we can go, where you'll fall and ROLL SO HARD YOU WISH YOU WERE DEAAAD". |
- When the palm muted e-string comes in to Big Black "Texas".
- Pretty much any Toddle song, since every part of their song is a hook. Really, this question is way too.. I mean, I could probably list a thousand songs.. |
The chorus on Cheap Tricks's Southern girls.
The just after the devils voice on Manowar's Bridge of Death when the vocals come in. When the full band kicks in on the Kiss song Black Diamond and the vocals start. "OUT ON THE STREETS FOR A LIVING!!!!!" |
And the wind.... cries.... mary

Some of mine:
The verse of Modern Lovers- Government Center "And I'm haunted by the freakish size of Nancy Reagan's head, no way that that thing has a body!" - Mission of Burma the melody of 96 Tears by ? and the Mysterians the yodeling in Adam and The Ants- Beat My Guest the verse and chorus hooks of Gary Gilmore's Eyes by the Adverts The bassline from Potential Rapist by Naked Raygun, and the guitar part on the chorus. Those 2 parts make the song incredibly addictive. the chorus on Tell Them by Naked Raygun the rhythmic emphasis of the vocals on the chorus of "Friday Night/Saturday Morning" by the Specials."I go out on Friday night and I come home on Saturday morning." It is so addictive The lyrical flow of "I'm living in this uh movie, but it doesn't move me" in Boredom by the Buzzcocks. That line hooked me on the song. The Misfits were an incredibly hooky band. the verse of Hippy Smell by Ween. |
speaking of the Minutemen- Jesus and Tequila and the World According to Nouns are incredibly addictive songs. That bassline and the guitar part at the beginning of Jesus and Tequila :). And the verse of The World According to Nouns captures me.

too many to list, but since someone mentioned MOB
the end of 'thats how i escaped my certain fate' when they sing that line twice then sing the bride gets me every time. especially honesty's an actors first mistake (i think thats the line) i find myself repeating that song linme 10 times just to hear that part.... |
I love the bit in New Order's Perfect Kiss when the sound bounces between the speakers. It's nothing original I know, but it gives the song, and me, great energy.

It's in "shellshock" , I think. |
that 'I miss you' ending part at Slint's Good Morning, Capitain. Its just briliant and so is the whole song and the whole album. Also that break up part at Don, Aman.
|
The line "Day in, day out, day in, day out" in Digital by Joy Division.
|
That part in Hum's Inuit Promise 'glad we got your hands warm...' that part.
