SYR6 and Brakhage
Hey folks,
Just curious if anyone knows what Brakhage films SY accompany on SYR6, as well as their playing order. I own the Criterion "By Brakhage" DVD collection and would be interested in getting the SYR disc if it covers some of the films on the DVD. It would be great syncing them together and hearing the music in its original context. |

Thanks a bunch, Atari. I've got three of these. I wonder if that's the playing order.
|
i don't have SYR, the brakage collection, or any text of light releases, but it seems pretty awesome to match them up...

bump
has anyone done this? |
No, I have the first brakhage collection (criterion), so I recognize most of those films, does anyone know if they're all on dvd, either in that collection or volume 2? even though it's "not the artists intention", I almost always play brakhage's films wth different music underneath. DOG STAR MAN is my favorite film ever and I've watched it silent twice, but having music underneath REALLY enhances the viewing experience. My way of looking at it is, there's never EVER going to be COMPLETE silence anyway, ules yku;re deaf.
Anyway I will do this soon. This also reminds me to get BRAKHAGE COLLECTION VOLUME 2. For my birthday!! |

i'd never come across him before syr6. and i've just youtubed dog star man ("not the artists intention") and watched prelude. fucking intense for a silent film. i loved the pace of it, i loved the red clouds and the way he shot them (moving or pulsing) made me think of being in the womb, or looking at light (the sun?) with your eyes shut. It made me think (quite probably because of my connection with him) of sonic youth's abstract music. but i was mesmorised for the 10 minutes or so, couldn't take my eyes off it. Incredible. when i have more time i will check out more of his work (and hopefully not ona shitty laptop screen) |
type in "Brakhage" to the search and there are two or three brakhage/dog star man tribute threads (started by me heheh), there's lots of information and screens and other interesting things...
what I need to do is make a thread re: "albums to line up with dog star man". DOUBLE LEOPARDS halve maen is a great one. |
Some other interesting links in addition to those atsonicpark has already mentioned:

Oh man, thanks for the Kael/Brakhage!

You are very welcome. There's a bit more stuff related with Stan Brakhage on UbuWeb. This is what comes up when running a search: http://search.atomz.com/search/?sp_a=sp10042f50&sp_q=%22stan+brakhage%22&sp_p=all &sp_f=UTF-8 I thought i'd post those specific links as i really found very interesting mr. Brakhage's words regarding his art. That interview is actually pretty cool in this aspect. It's a shame it's incomplete, though. |
ubu is a wonderful resource for experimental film.
Also, saw text of light live once and it was bomb as fuck. I miss a lot of people on here, I should post more |
I don't think all of Brakhage's work is on DVD just yet, but i think that alot of it is, I do have this now somewhat rare VHS tape that his some of his painted film that does not appear on the Criterion Collection Vol. 1, I need to double check if this VHS has some stuff that included (or not) on the Vol. 2...
|
I always thought SYR6 should have included a DVD of the performance...

that would be cool, however i think the trouble would be getting permission from the Brakhage Estate as far as the inclusion of the visuals of his films. its been documented that Brakhage was against the use of audio in conjunction with his films, most but not all were silent and intended to be such. maybe i'm wrong but I would imagine that SY and Lee (for ToL) got special permission to use his work in performance. |
