weirdo guitar bands

Okay, I'm looking for "weird" guitar stuff in bands... not solo guitar dudes doing weird stuff, I'm talking weird riffs by guitarists in bands.. and I'm not even going to defend or define what "weird" is, I'm talking:

Polvo
Thinking Fellers Union Local 282
[most] Captain Beefheart
[some] Erase Errata
Fatal Flying Guilloteens

shit like that. highly creative and twisted warped -- and even "weird" -- guitar lines. super weird alternate tunings, whammy bar abuse, single note harmonicized tremolo flanger into necrophagist neoclassical death metal solo for 3 seconds while orthrelm jacks off to bunny panty from little girl's fudgy ass patties, WHATEVER... got any suggestions? (i don't care how obvious they are, let's make the definitive list).

and i'm not looking for noise, because yes, magick markers probably have some "weird" guitar lines, but htey suck my ass. i mean actual GOOD bands.. if you're familiar with any of the above bands you know what i'm looking for. so, shoot.

Hella if you wanna consider them a guitar band
Arab on Radar
Deerhoof, earlier stuff
Dilute
Marnie Stern

Ahhh, if I could only record that weird, disturbing dance riff I've got. lame.

CHOUT 06.09.2007 01:49 PM

I was gonna say Polvo, already mentioned.

Torn Curtain 06.09.2007 02:23 PM

Gary Lucas's playing on Jeff Buckley's Mojo pin

Jeff Buckley - So real (weird chords and solo)

The beginning of Tom Verlaine's solo on Venus (I think it really sounds like a synthesizer, which it is not off course)

Lee Underwood's guitar licks on Tim Buckley's Starsailor

Torn Curtain 06.09.2007 02:34 PM

The Cure - Pornography, A strange day (I've always found the solo weird), A reflection (the unconventional chords)

currently listening to Crime - "Piss On Your Dog"

which has a marginally "weird" part

That's the band that did Hotwire My Heart? right?

Yesiree, they did that one you mentioned way back in nineteen hundred and seventy-six.

I was thinking of Polvo but looks like it already has been mentioned a thousand times...

The Flying Luttenbachers

Varge! (lots of baritone guitar, and just really rad sounding guitar tones. Check 'em)
The Creeping Nobodies
The Chinese Stars have some cool tones on A Rare Sensation
Les Georges Leningrad
Cursive (sometimes, like on the track Bloody Murderer)
From Fiction (really winding, awesome guitar parts built off the bass and drums foundation)
...

atari 2600 06.09.2007 02:55 PM

Saw Polvo play the Uptown Lounge (which by then had been renamed to The Shoe Box) a couple of times. They're okay, but for fucksakes...

Torn Curtain 06.09.2007 03:35 PM

Bauhaus - She's in parties
U2 - The fly
The Cocteau Twins - Otterley
Jeff Buckley - Grace (the intro and the chords), Dream brother, Kanga-roo, Vancouver, Murder suicide meteor slave, Gunshot glitter, Demon John
The Smiths - Still ill
Smashing Pumpkins - Thru the eye of Ruby
Markus Acher from The Notwist plays a lot of weird chords
Talking Heads - I Zimbra, Mind, Drugs

some of my favorites...love the first two, but
Remain in Light & Fear of Music are probably their creative peak.

Creatively, both Jerry Harrison and David Byrne are usually underrated guitar players.

fugazifan 06.09.2007 06:38 PM

early sun city girls

MellySingsDoom 06.09.2007 06:52 PM

Pretty much most things by the Dead C is "weird", I suppose.
