I personally think lessons aren't the way to go for anyone wanting to learn an instrument. particulary with guitars - sure you might be able to do sweep arpeggios but it makes you a boring guitar player ultimatly my eyes.
maybe there is such a think as a good teacher but my experiance is that they'll try and fill your head with a load of bullshit oppinions and kill off all that is good about music.

Private lessons are good for you, but people who teach guitar usually have no business doing it. I took private lessons for 10 years (not guitar).

Learn how to read tab. Learn chords as well. Once you can look at the tab of a song or the chords and lyrics to a song and play through it- get a metronome or drum machine. A drum machine is nice because you can tap the beat of the song you want to play. Metronome you have to figure out what BPM you want in another way. Get confortable playing at a constant tempo that a drum machine or a metronome gives you.

I've met guitarists that have never been in a band very long, have been playing guitar waaaay longer than me, took lessons for 10 years, etc. and had no rhythm whatsoever.

If you teach yourself. . . knowing the notes on the E and A strings and knowing rhythm is incredibly important. Not neccesarily knowing a lot of chord formations but knowing how to form a lot of chords is important.

There are many people I know who have played for years and will be like- "WTF?" If you tell them to play a C#m for example.

I just learnt from a book to get me going, but then just learnt by myself what sounds good and what doesn't... Lessons are a waste of money, in my opinion...

Yeah, I think the basic theory you need are chord names. Screw everything else while youre a begginer.

A good way to start is to find an album you like which seems really basic (the first albums by The Ramones, the Stooges or The Misfits for example), learn some TABS for them. You'll get a real sense of achievement making the guitar sound like a song you recognise (and like) which will give you some insentive to carry on learning. The worst thing is to bog yourself down in complex stuff at the beginning so you never feel like you're getting anywhere.
