Yeah, NEU! is pretty hard to top. Honorable mention to Electronic Meditation by Tangerine Dream though. And then there's about half a dozen Kraftwerk records, and Tago Mago by Can...

Yeti for sure, Phallus Dei as well.
Popol Vuh's "Aguirre" is incredible. Brainticket is arguable, since they weren't from Germany, but that LP is a fine one. |
it brings us to the question, is it the region or the sound? they got mentioned in krautrocksampler and tons other kraut databases, released at the same time as all that...
ED: i never thought popol vuh could be so good, when they were in their prime, wow! i left out phaedra by tangerine dream, but forgot to mention zeit. hey, clone, you have that make up/flower traveling band lp? |
I don't have the actual LP (because I don't have a spare 600 bucks), but I did download it recently.
It was the last stuff of theirs I didn't have. Some great stuff on there as well as a small bit of cheese. Oh, and I do think of it more as a sound than the region, and I think there is plenty of contemporary stuff that fits this description too. The term seems to hit a sore spot for some of the musicians from that original scene. You know, kinda like how they don't call them "Brazil Nuts" in Brazil. |
hahahaha, yeah, it used to be a derogatory name, and now they are offended when describing a band "krautrock" that weren't part of the scene.
i found that lp for $130 u.s.d. aprox. yesterday, i thought it was quite expensive but you say it's going for $600? if i had the money i would buy it. |
nice lists.... no schulze?
krautrock was a pejorative term given by the britishs... |
EN mentioned the first Ash Ra Tempel, which contains Schulze...
"Cyborg" is my favorite of his solo LPs. |
I really love Ege Bamyasi, but I'm not really well versed in Krautrock.

popol vuh- in den gärten pharaohs
can- delay 1968 the monks- monktime @ savage clone: you mention witthüser&westrupp; they way you spell it makes me think you're not living in germany, are you? i am, which means i can understand the words, and to me, their lyrics oftentimes are too cheesy and hippiesque. but if you don't understand what they're singing, it must be dead cool, though quite trashy. |

Really? You like Phaedra. I thought that one was awful. Electronic Meditation, Atem and Zeit are pretty ace though. Noone has mentioned Music Von Harmonia by Harmonia. That one is ace. I don't know if Brast Burn count. I thought they were Japanese. I guess they sound pretty Kraut-y though. |
Yeah, I was lazy with the spelling of W&W.
And I'm not in Germany. Yeah, I probably enjoy it more not being well-versed in the German language. I have heard the "lyrical goofiness" criticism before, and I have a feeling that would get on my nerves too if I could understand them better. "Goofy" isn't usually my thing. |
some of my favorites:
