amazing record, any others like it?

The heliocentric world of sun ra vol 1 is completely orgasmic. any other sun ra records like this?

noticed a major influence from the cd to the dream/aktion unit

well i guess you've entered the world of free jazz/free improv.
there's hundreds and hundreds of other records you will find similarly enticing.
i say buy "Machine Gun" by Peter Brotzmann for extreme free playing, or perhaps "Topography of the lungs" by evan parker, derek bailey and han bennick. Check anything on Incus. If you like dream/aktion unit, check out some flaherty/corsano/yeh stuff.
if you're looking for some stuff that's more "jazz" based i'd check out albert ayler, charles gayle, ornette coleman, more sun ra (there's hundreds of records).
good luck!

thanks man!!

every sun ra record i've heard is excellent for one reason or another, but of the top of my head i can't think of any records that are especially similar to heliocentric worlds vol.1, maybe try vols 2 and 3, i haven't heard 2 or 3 though so i can't say how similar they are to the first

COSMIC TONES FOR MENTAL THERAPY is my favorite so far. It's hanging on my wall right now next to BMR because it's so good.

it has the funky, suitable-even-for-parties moon dance on it, doesn't it?

Yeah, first track on side B.

Well, obviously Vol. 2 is more of the same in a great way. I second Cosmic Tones for Mental Therapy as an essential record too, though I wouldn't say they sound the same. Heliocentric is definitely of a free jazz influenced school while Cosmic Tones is totally it's own school of music.

For more stuff along the lines of Heliocentric Worlds, I'd say check out any of the ESP records. In particular Concert for the Comet Kohoutek is incredible. Also Nothing Is, and Somewhere Else are two more great ones. Evidence did a great double cd of the "Lost Albums" too Cymbals and Crystal Spears.

My all time favorite Ra album is Atlantis, but like Cosmic Tones, this record has no real peers, it's like a wholly original music statement.

Mostly I agree, but there is Reflections in Blue, which veers scarily close to synthy smooth jazz versions of standards. I actually got rid of that one so I wouldn't play it by accident, since the cover has Ra looking like he always does.

Indeed. Cosmic Tones for Mental Therapy might be my favourite so far and that track is ace.

I'm also new to free jazz. The European shit is way fucked up, so far I've got Die Like A Dog Quartet- Small Birds Have Fast Hearts Vol.1, Machine Gun and Evan Parker/Barry Guy/Paul Lytton- At The Vortex.

Evan Parker is amazing, the cicular breathing solo he does on the second track is so amazing. I haven't heard anything that has blown my mind like that in ages.

I've heard Sun Ra but don't have any albums yet. Definately on the 'to get' list.

Albert Ayler's pretty amazing if you're looking for a more aggressive style.
