derek bailey appreciation thread
inspired by the haino thread.
i'm going through a guitar improv phase at the moment, and i can't get enough of the man. i've just ordered some collaborations, (ruins, evan parker, hans bennick...) and the more i listen, the more i think how much of a complete and utter genius he was. i mean, the sounds he can get from sitting on a stool with nothing but an acoustic guitar is phenomenal. it's the sort of stuff many guitarists spend hundreds of pounds on effects to achieve. complete sonic mastery. one of the most amazing improv records i have ever heard is "Viper" by Bailey and Chinese Pipa player Min Xiao Fen. it is mind blowing. whaddya think?? |
I hated him at first. Now I don't. I very often say, to anyone who'll listen, that Bailey is the greatest guitarist this country has produced. I don't listen to him very often, but when I do it's always very relaxing. "Aw, uncle Derek's playing. How nice".

I love em. My favorite thus far is Ballads, a great one for sure. It sucks that he passed away though.

check at downtown music gallery to see if he still has that Derek Bailey DVD that was filmed at his store.. i was at the gig a performance for like 20 people with Derek talking a bunch between songs and stuff really awesome and i think it was during his last ever visit to NYC. Has anyone seen it before?

A great man. I picked up a double live album recently: New Sights, Old Sounds, which is super.

Yes, I think so...Is that the one with Alan Licht (I think) in the background. One of the dudes from Julie Mittens made me watch it. Well, he didn't put a gun to my head or anything but..you know. |

No problem. You know me, willing to share anytime. I would have made a downloading link, but I figured might as well just give everyone the original source. |
