Ride Into The Sun

radarmaker 07.27.2017 01:02 PM

or Sister Ray

radarmaker 07.27.2017 01:03 PM

or What Goes On

Severian 07.27.2017 08:38 PM

Bah!

It's obviously "Sister Ray" or "White Light/White Heat" or "Heroin" or fucking gobs of other tracks. Weirdo.

Severian 07.27.2017 08:39 PM

"Sweet Jane" (obvious I know, but also kickass)
"The Gift"
"Rock n Roll"

Bah!

Rob Instigator 07.28.2017 08:02 AM

Rock N Roll

noisereductions 07.28.2017 08:11 AM

Their entire discography is one long awesome song.

Severian 07.28.2017 10:10 AM

Yeah, but I think "Sister Ray" is their defining moment.

I do agree that everything from all four of the true VU albums, and everything from "VU" is pretty goddamn perfect. But "Sister Ray" is their, "You thought you knew the truth of rock, but you don't know shit" song.

And if you can't make it all the way through "Sister Ray," then you are a pussy.

This theory is disproven by "I'm Sticking With You."
Does "Squeeze" count?

Rob Instigator 07.28.2017 10:47 AM

the genius of "busy sucking on my ding dong." hahhahahahaha

"I'm Sticking With You" is essential!!!!!

Th'Fuck?!!

Not only that, but that song sungle-handedly gave birth to the White Strpes... a band that, I maintain, was fucking solid.

I really hope you're not being a jerkass, because there is nothing not genius about that lyric or any element of "Sister Ray."

noisereductions 07.28.2017 11:14 AM

um... "I'm Sticking With You" is awesome!

I don't know if Squeeze "counts" in the statement that I made. But I do like that album a lot as its own thing.

Savage Clone 07.28.2017 11:25 AM

I'm sticking with you also gave birth to a lot of cutesy infantilized twee garbage that we see all over the place as well. Though I suppose Olympia Washington is equally to blame. It's not like they don't have their fair share of Clunkers in general though. Everybody does when they put out a decent amount of albums. The murder mystery song is pretty tedious if you ask me.

Rob Instigator 07.28.2017 11:34 AM

lots of tediousness in VU catalog.

confusion is next 07.29.2017 05:55 PM

sister ray...was and is a lesson of what rock should be

The Murder Mystery is great.

They only put out 4 albums (Squeeze does not count, of course). No skippable tracks in my mind.

Olympia, Washington? You're blaming Oly for cutesy twee? The hell? Oly also gave birth to Unwound, and a veritable fuckton of other decent hands and artists.

Do you just not like Beat Happening?

Beat Happening were awful. In and of themselves I wouldn't have such a problem, but the fact that they became influential did way more damage than good in my opinion.

I also don't particularly care for the third Velvet Underground album but I see why other people like it.

Cute music isn't solely Olympia's fault, but K Records sure didn't help.

I have plenty of musical heroes, VU high among them, but they all make missteps and I can't think of any who are "infallible." I don't even want them to be.

VU albums 1-4 are perfect. 1, 2 and 4 are *more* perfect than 3, but they're still all perfect. Not infallible, but still perfect. In my opinion.

I kinda see what you mean, but K did a lot more than cultivate Beat Happeninf clones. Modest Mouse, Microphones... not cute. Frickin' terrifying at times.

Also, Beat Happening was pretty goddamn terrifying too, if you listen closely. Especially Black Candy. Great album. Great hand. In my opinion.

I have zero musical heroes, but I do love some musicians and bands who never made an error in their official discography. Examples include Fugazi, Kanye, Velvet Underground, Aphex Twin, and all the other fuckers I talk about too much

noisereductions 07.29.2017 11:09 PM

Wow. I fucking love Beat Happening. Hard.

Savage Clone 07.30.2017 12:57 AM

Modest mouse might be the worst band I have seen get that successful in the last 10-15 years. Unlistenable vocals. Can't believe Johnny Marr played with them.

Edit:
I guess I can see the point you are trying to make, but obviously we have a few fundamental differences in taste ( including what defines "terrifying" in a musical combo).

Well, you're 100% right that Mosest Mouse was patently terrible by the time they became popular. I still remember listening to "Float on" for the first time with my then-girlfriend, and the two of us just stared at each other, mouths agape, eyes wide, thinking, "WHAT. THE. FUCK." I mean, how do you go from a cracked out thunderer like "What People are Made of" to... THAT?

But before that point, when they were hanging around with Calvin Johnson and K, and Up! Records, they were one of the best things going. I swear, their first two albums and early EPs (and Moon & Antarctica, to a lesser extent) sound like they were made by a completely different band than whatever pie-faced fuckparty shat out the line, "Alright all ready even if things end up a bit too heavy we'll all float on!" *projectile vomit*

I feel like this is common knowledge though, so chances are you have heard and dislike tracks like "Trucker's Atlas," in which case yes, there's a huge difference in taste at play here.

Savage Clone 07.30.2017 10:51 AM

They definitely changed, but I heard them from the beginning on (they got tons of exposure on college radio in my area when they were new )and always had an allergic reaction to their whole thing. Clearly they did fine without my support though.

To me, they were the best band in the world for a while. Modest Mouse in 1997 was a mighty fucking thing indeed. And I actually think early on, their live performances of the This is a Long Drive... stuff we're superior to the actual record, because they were kind of nuts, and played with a volatile sloppy punk energy that still hit the right notes.

Moon & Antarctica was a behemoth too. Seeing them play "The Stars are Projectors" was fucking electrifying. It was like they were putting every other Pacific Northwest band on notice, and saying, "Yeah, we're on Epic now, but we still own you. We DARE you to try for something like this." And for a while, they ruled. In my opinion, they put most other bands to shame both on and off record.

Then of course they started to suck in ways nobody could have possibly predicted, and they never stopped sucking. STILL — for a while, they had everyone hanging by the nuts.

Savage Clone 07.31.2017 12:36 AM

Meh

evollove 07.31.2017 06:49 AM

Savage doesn't like Kate Bush. Why would anyone argue about music with such a creature?

Savage Clone 07.31.2017 07:19 AM

Heh, guess I just don't dig squeakers and yelpers. You got me there.

Rob Instigator 07.31.2017 08:50 AM

kate bush is boring as FUCK. I mean, FUUUUUUCCKKKKK..

I hate that squeaky voiced shit. Kate Bush, Joanna Newsome, Alvin & The Chipmunks... etc.

My fave modest mouse son , and the first one I heard, is Dirty Fingernails.
https://youtu.be/9Fi6ZOhCGQ4 fucking LOVE this song.
