A good place to start is maybe Amon Duul II's Yeti album. Can, Faust and Neu are great too, but you might get a false impression of what most krautrock actually sounds like. Yeti, on the other hand, is just pure Kraut.

Another good way of getting some background to the music, as well as some pointers regarding which albums to go for, is Julian Cope's book Krautrocksampler.

anyone know how hard these records are to come by, might go record hunting this saturday

Savage Clone 11.22.2007 10:36 AM

A lot of these albums have been reissued on CD and/or 180g vinyl.
If you want originals, you will pay through the nose. I once sold an original copy of Can's "Monster Movie" for over $1800.00.

Beats me why would anyone want the originals when you can get juicier 180g reissues cheaper.
For some reason I never see Can or Neu! albums in the mid price range here, cds or vinyls. I'd love to get some of those.
There was some cool krautrock blog with loads of uploaded rare albums, but it's gone now I believe.

A Thousand Threads 11.22.2007 11:16 AM

You can also search in that "post rare or out of print records thread".
I remember uploading Can's very first session and posting it in that thread, some awesome stuff.

sarramkrop 11.22.2007 11:20 AM

I need to remember to upload an amazing latter-day Can Peel Session that I have downloaded from a website a while ago. The drumming is most impressive.

Iain 11.22.2007 12:43 PM

Please do. I've been searching from some Can Peel Session stuff. My friend had a tape in his car and it was ace but all he knew about it was that it was a Can Peel Session. I managed to download that Can Peel Session cd that was early 70's stuff but I don't think it is the same stuff. The stuff I remember hearing had a song that went "this is the DNA song" if my memory serves me correctly. Also I do recall some ace drumming so maybe it was the same stuff.

Also, I wouldn't say Faust Tapes was the best place to start with Faust. It's the easiest to get hold of an orig. vinyl of though. You should be able to find one for about a tenner if you hunt around whereas originals of the first 2 records go for way more. They have been reissued, the first one recently on Lilith (who did the No New York reissue), but the second one is a bit harded to find the reissue of. Both easily available on cd. Anyway, Faust-wise I would start with So Far or Faust IV.

so not to repeat can/faust/neu!, i'll like to recommend early amon düül I (as a.d.II has already being discussed) for great big ensemble, motorik communal jamming.

where's the love for guru guru? ufo, bitch!

like phlegm already noted, there are many blogs dedicated to post kraut albums, search for them.

Early Popol Vuh is pretty great, especially In Dem Garten Pharaos.
