The music references in Juno

At first I thought these things were fun, kind of cool, you know, like hey, music I can identify. And then later, hours after seeing the movie, things started to seem weird.

1. Is there really any way a girl like Juno would be so into the Stooges? She's never heard of Sonic Youth, but she's into the Stooges. Right. And Patti Smith? Okay, I could see if she were a real rock nerd, but she's not. She's a precocious but rather ordinary girl who doesn't seem overly obsessed with collecting music or with music history. I don't know. It strikes me as wrong.

2. The creepy Dad (Jennifer Garner's husband)--He's into Sonic Youth and the Melvins but disses 77 punk? And gives Juno's interest in the Stooges virtually no credence? What the fuck is up with that?

I'm sure there's more weirdness I'll think of later, but this is what kind of creeps me out now.

What do you think?

word up i thought the same thing. also considering their taste in music, the soudntrack to the movie was compeltely irrelevant and i hated it.

Yeah, I was very disappointed in that lame twee soundtrack. Not just because it was twee but because it was, like you say, incongruous with the music "in" the movie. The soundtrack should have been Iggy and Patti Smith and the Runaways, Melvins, Sonic Youth, and the like.

Why would anyone be so cruel as to put so much Kimya Dawson/Moldy Peaches music into a film meant for public consumption?
Besides the fact that this is basically a date movie for people who don't like Hugh Grant/Meg Ryan vehicles, that was the nail in the coffin in my decision to sit this one out.

gmku 01.14.2008 11:30 PM

well, I wish I'd known. I was a sucker for the "nominated for three Golden Globe awards" ad on TV. I'm very gullible.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 01.14.2008 11:32 PM

These are all minute things that didn't seem that big to me.

gmku 01.14.2008 11:39 PM

yeah, unfortunately it's bugging me. I'm having moviegoer's remorse over this one.

Cantankerous 01.14.2008 11:57 PM

did they refer to LPs as "Vinyls" too?

Does it even matter?

I haven't seen this movie, but there was definitely a time when I was into the Stooges and Patti Smith without knowing anything about Sonic Youth. So I don't find that hard to believe at all. I was also into the Velvets, but still had no clue when it came to Sonic Youth. It really makes sense, considering how Sonic Youth are usually the ones to name-drop those other bands, as opposed to the other way around.

this movie seems worse and worse everytime someone talks about it.

sounds like gilmore girls if they wanted to suck even more than the last seasons.

avantgarde1 01.15.2008 01:33 AM

yeah but sonic youth was on the gilmore girls.

Everyneurotic 01.15.2008 01:40 AM

i liked gilmore girls from seasons 1 to 4, afterwards, it gives me the creeps.

yeah, they were, and so were yo la tengo and sparks.

Yeah, why the fuck do people keep talking about this movie? I'm really wondering. I'm not trying to be sarcastic: Tell me what's good about it. It looks fucking terrible. I'll eventually see it, of course, but it seems tailor-made for indie hipster idiots. Who cares?

gmku 01.15.2008 07:20 AM

Gilmore Girls was at least smart about its pop cultural references. That was one of the fun things about it.

Ah go spend 7 bucks and find out. You might like it. I actually don't think it's that bad. A little sappy, a little contrived, and the music references seem a little, like I say, forced or unrealistic. But all in all, it's a good story. It reminded me a little of Wes Anderson, actually, like a less anti-septic Wes Anderson, a bit more feeling and less pretension.

In spite of my misgivings, I'd now give it a 7.5 out of 10 stars.

I have yet to see Control. I am behind on the whole indie hipster movie thing.

gmku 01.15.2008 07:53 AM

Get with the program.

sarramkrop 01.15.2008 08:01 AM

Gmku, stop making excuses for movies that sound like they would be terrible viewing even before you watch them.
