The "Priest" They Called Him
http://the-spark-that-bled.blogspot.com/

A collaboration with William S Burroughs is the last thing any one would have expected Kurt Cobain to release, especially in the same year that Nirvana toppled Michael Jackson from the Billboard chart in America and brought the alternative into the mainstream(spawning a million and one copyists and sparking an industry frenzy in Seattle in the process.) But that's exactly what happened. Of course avant-garde novelist Burroughs released many spoken word albums, most notably Dead City Radio which was released two years prior to The "Priest" They Called Him. Based on a short story by Burroughs and backed by Cobain on guitar, the 'song' is startling, in the fact that it is so radically different from anything Kurt had done before.

Although the pairing at first seem odd, the common thread between the two was heroin addiction, and it is that which Burroughs story (like much of his work) is centered round, the story of an addict searching for a fix on Christmas Eve. And Kurt's guitar is a suitably bleak backing to Burroughs voice, a dissonant, droning wash of guitar noise and feedback. certainly, it shows the way in which Kurt's ideas on music were progressing towards the aggressive sound witnessed on In Utero.

The song was released on Vinyl picture disc and depending on the condition, can sell for big prices, so if you want to track it down i suggest you search Ebay or Amazon.

I also suggest you track down the work of Burroughs, both his novels and spoken word albums. You wont regret it, i promise!

PS A bit of random info is that its the bassist from Nirvana, Krist Novoselic posing on the cover.

David Matthews - 1977 - Dune

CTI 7-5005

Funky spaciness from one of the 70's best arrangers! The set's a largeish orchestral work dedicated to Dune and other sci-fi books and films. Sounds goofy, but it's pretty darn great -- and Dave Matthews takes his work with James Brown and makes the whole thing come out pretty darn funky. Includes the massive "Sandworms".

Tracks :

A1 Dune Part I: Arrakis (6:03)
A2 Dune Part II: Sandworms (5:03)
A3 Dune Part III: Song Of The Bene Gesserit (2:50)
A4 Dune Part IV: Muad'Dib (6:36)
B1 Space Oddity (6:05)
B2 Silent Running (3:16)
B3 Pricess Leia's Theme (From Star Wars) (2:55)
B4 Main Theme From Star Wars (3:22)

Musicians:
Andy Newmark-Drums, Burt Collins-Trumpet, Horn, Cliff Carter-Synthesizer, Keyboards, David Matthews-Keyboards, David Sanborn-Saxophone, Sax(Alto), David Taylor-Trombone, Trombone(Bass), David Tofani-Flute, Piccolo, Wind, Eric Gale-Guitar, Gary King-Bass, Gerry Chamberlain-Trombone, Googie Coppola- Vocals, Gordon Gottlieb-Percussion, Grover Washington Jr.-Saxophone, Sax(Tenor), Sax(Soprano), Hiram Bullock-Guitar, James Bossy-Horn, Jim Bosby-Horn, Joe Shepley-Flugelhorn, John Gatchell-Horn, Jon Faddis-Trumpet, -Horn, Joseph J. Shepley-Trumpet, Lew DelGatto-Clarinet, Oboe, Wind, Lew Soloff-Horn, Mark Egan-Bass, Randy Brecker-Trumpet, Sam Burtis-Trombone, Sanford Allen-Strings, Steve Gadd-Drums, Sue Evans-Percussion, Tom "Bones" Malone-Trombone, Wayne Andre-Trombone, Will Lee-Bass

Reviews :

from www.blaxploitation.com
This is not the soundtrack to the movie Dune (that was was a snoozer by AOR favorites Toto). This one sneaks on to our list courtesy of the B-side, comprising disco-style covers of parts of John Williams' Star Wars suite. So what else is on the album? Is it funky? You're damn right it is. Any self-respecting jazz funk fan would start to quiver when faced with the session musician lineup on this concept LP - Andy Newmark and Steve Gadd on drums, Randy Brecker and Jon Faddis in the horns, Grover Washington and David Sanborn on sax. This obscure CTI album is the source of the killer sample cut 'Sandworms', as used on several major-league hip-hop tracks. Forget the rest of the (mainly disco-esque) cuts and head for Sandworms. It's funkier than a mosquito's tweeter (as Nina Simone once sang) and will blow the roof off your bass bins!

David Matthews gathers an incredible collection of artists to collaborate on interpreting the sci-fi masterpiece, Dune. Some of the greatest in the field add their flavor to Matthews' vision. Jazz fans will be delighted to hear Grover Washington Jr., David Sanborn, Eric Gale, Hiram Bullock, Randy Brecker, Andy Newmark, Steve Gadd, Mark Egan, even a young Will Lee riffing. The music style is dated, but true fans will enjoy!

Bio :
The keyboardist David Matthews has been, among other things, a steady source of funk, whether drinking it in from the sweat of the rhythmically innovative soul godfather James Brown or attempting to pour it over the head of the somewhat wimpier Paul Simon. Trends for better or worse that Matthews has been associated with since the '70s also include the CTI sound, an exhausting list of television soundtracks and commercial advertisements, and a series of critically praised releases by the Manhattan Jazz Orchestra. He should not be confused with the Dave Matthews of jam band fame, nor the earlier arranger and reed player from the big-band heyday, although both of them appear to have worked for Frank Sinatra at one time.

A graduate of the University of Cincinnati with a Bachelor's degree in composition,

Matthews began his performing career as the leader of a dance band in the late '60s. This group toured extensively in several parts of Europe and Matthews also began establishing a presence on the Cincinnati jazz scene. The next move was a big one; in l970 he began working as both an arranger and bandleader for James Brown, making it possible for him to relocate to New York City and utilize the Brown connection in order to garner steady freelance assignments. His clients included demanding performers such as drummer and bandleader Buddy Rich, singers Mark Murphy and Bonnie Raitt, and the Starland Vocal Band, among many others. In the mid-'70s he became staff arranger for the CTI label, resulting in a series of smooth productions that were loved by some jazz buffs and loathed by others. Matthews formed his own groups from this period on, including the David Matthews & the Manhattan Jazz Quintet. He scored many films for Hollywood such as The Parallax View, the first version of The Stepford Wives and Night Moves. He also has had quite a high profile for his activities in Japan.

Boy Dirt Car / Fi - Split LP

BDC were formed by Darren Brown and Eric Lunde in 1981 after the two young punks met Glenn Branca at a Chicago noise-music festival. Gathering a few friends together for jams, they proceeded to play with a revolving-door line-up that usually consisted of Brown, Lunde and any drunken and/or drug-addled buddy they could string along. Finally settling on a semi-stable line-up that consisted of the duo and Keith Brammer and Dan Kubinski of Die Kreuzen on various metal percussive instruments and noise-making devices, BDC found their feet and were soon hailed by well-meaning folks as America's answer to Einstürzende Neubauten. Inactive as a band for many years, Eric Lunde in the meantime released some solo records and Darren Brown formed Impact Test. F/i are From Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and has been around since 1981, releasing half a dozen LPs on RRRecords. The band started out as a unit elaborating on noise structures in the tradition of Throbbing Gristle or Nurse With Wound. They are also influenced by Hawkwind and Spacemen 3. The Split LP was released on vinyl by RRRecords (RRR 006) in 1986.

2. Boy Dirt Car - Friction Moves

8. F/i - Another Magic Window

impLOG - Holland Tunnel Dive (12'', 1980)

impLOG were Don Christensen with help from Jody Harris. They were both in The Contortions and released just two records as impLOG - the 'Holland Tunnel Dive' 12" on Lust/Unlust (home of DNA, Teenage Jesus And The Jerks, Mars, Dark Day, Jeff And Jane Hudson) and a 7", 'Breakfast / She Creatures' on Log Records. Jody Harris is one of the unsung heroes of No Wave - a Contortion, an impLOGger, founder of the wonderful Raybeats and collaborator with New York legend Robert Quine on the super 'Escape' lp on the mighty Lust/Unlust label. Remarkably, Don Christensen reappeared under the impLOG moniker in late 2005 after a 25 year hiatus to do a remix for Philip Glass.

EXTREME NOISE TERROR - Rehearsal 18.02.87

There reason why this blog is called "Carry On screaming" is because Disorder and Extreme Noise Terror have a song with that name. But it was when I listened to this killer version that I really decided to use the name.
E.N.T. here deliver 4 tracks with the furious that you haven't heard before. The recording is quite good for a practice and I'm surprised that it's never been on vinyl.
Mick Harris (Napalm Death) is featuring in this recording as well as the video below.

Julian Cope/Rabbi Joseph Gordan - Competition 7"

Probably the Holy Grail for Cope collectors, this pseudonymous release was put out on Bam Caruso in 1985 as a lost sixties classic by the Rabbi Joseph Gordan. In reality Cope freaks out under an assumed name. Typical Cope to let such a great track remain underground, although it was released later on one of his Floored Genius compilations. The b side has never seen the light of day anywhere else though, and even if it's little more than a stoned doodle, its so quintessentially Cope that I can't help but love it. My copy sounding a bit scratchy, so forgive the surface noise and get on down to a true rarity.

Lemon Kittens

Lemon Kitten’s “Spoonfed & Writhing” released on Step Forward in 1979. I just happened upon this fine folker/DADA/???/// record. I’ve nabbed these words from Scaruffi.com to put this into perspective: “The Lemon Kittens were two young multi-strumentalists involved in multimedia art-performance/theater: Danielle Dax, a fan of electronic music, biblical mysticism and middle-eastern vocal music, and Karl Blake, a veteran jazz musician. Their music harked back to Canterbury’s jazz-rock, to Brian Eno’s avantgarde rock, and to the nonsense quality of much British rock.”

Tripping Daisy - Jesus Hits Like the Atom Bomb

from allmusic.com:
Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Tripping Daisy's first two albums were written off as average post-grunge alt-rock records, which may make the presence of Eric Drew Feldman — a former member of Pere Ubu and a colleague of both Captain Beefheart and Frank Black — as a producer and keyboardist a little puzzling to the group's detractors. After all, Tripping Daisy was supposed to be in it for the cash and fame, not art, but critics may have to change their tune after listening to the Daisy's third album, Jesus Hits Like the Atom Bomb. The band has made a big stylistic breakthrough, enhancing the psychedelic subtext that ran through their first two records, retaining their melodic sensibility and jacking up their weirdness quotient, thanks to Feldman. Although there are a few times where their ambitions outweigh their achievements, the entire result is an impressive record that balances punk-pop with art-rock. It's a smart, ambitious and successful album that may come as a surprise, not only for the doubters but for hardcore fans, since nothing they've done before suggests the power of Jesus Hits Like the Atom Bomb. (Also, it's nice that Tripping Daisy paid tribute to the great, underappreciated indie-rock band Brainiac and its tragically departed leader Tim Taylor by covering "Indian Poker" — it, like the rest of the album, shows that their hearts are in the right place.)

1969 album recorded by band also known as Die Anderen which is once again is full of excellent harmony laden psychedelic pop with lush production from Giorgio Moroder (the brains behind Donna Summer's "I Feel Love") .The band had started to experiment more on this their second album as the opening 6 minute track "Life is Your Profession" showed. The whole album is obviously influenced by the more stoned end of the Beatles.

“FAST PRODUCT” / CRASH COURSE IN SCIENCE / MASKULL / SOCRATES DRANK THE CONIUM / BRUCE MCCULLOUGH

VARIOUS ARTISTS - “FAST PRODUCT: MUTANT POP 78/79″ (1980)
This compilation of late ’70s singles on the Scottish record label Fast Product, put together for the U.S. market by the PVC label, is notable not just because it features a handful of early Gang of Four recordings, but because it simply is a great record all the way through. Here, The Human League’s “Being Boiled” is much more subdued and pleasantly not as bombastic as the version that appears on their “Travelogue” LP, The Flowers are a great girl band on par with the Au Pairs, Scars have some great basslines, 2.3’s jangly jangles are crisp, and the Mekons’ single “Where Were You” never gets old, even after a dozen consecutive listens.
Regarding the “mutant pop” concept, Wikipedia sez:
Fast Product also produced ’subversive commodities’ that problematised pop music (hence their early monikkers - ‘difficult fun’ and ‘mutant pop’) and politicised their youthful buyers into a consciousness of taking control of the means of expression, getting confident and reappropriating the means of production. Often packaging their ‘products’ with a caustic yet subtle sideswipe at consumerism (the image of a wall of gold disks on the cover of the Mekons first single etc), Fast Product showed how all aspects of the record business, from musicianship to design to distribution, could be taken out of the hands of the major labels.

Psychic Space Invasion - All God's Children Got Space

Recorded and released in 2006 All God's Children is an uncompromising assertion of Ian's love of pure drone. Created entirely on a keyboard played through a couple of pedals and using only the bare minimum of notes this a swirly vortex of sound. Probably not to everyones taste but definitely to mine.

this is from Touching Extremes
'Ian Holloway/Psychic Space Invasion has created a minor masterpiece of static minimalism which you'd be silly not to grab, especially considering that all Elvis Coffee's releases come in limited editions of 50 to 75 copies and are sent in exchange of postal costs only. All evolves from a fixed organ chord which somehow recalls Charlemagne Palestine's synthesizer pieces circa "Four manifestations on six elements", all oscillating harmonics and undulating frequencies which truly free the mind from extraneous thoughts and tense interferences. Halfway through the CD, slightly contrasting currents generated by different chords and a few minutes of flanger-like treatment of the sound move the music a little bit while remaining coherent to the grand scheme of things. At the end, everything returns to the initial flux, a quasi-immobile procession of elongated reflections whose conclusion finds us relaxed, almost intoxicated, our heartbeat slowed down of several notches. Warmly recommended.'

Sonic Boom: The Art of Sound

Sonic Boom was an exhibition of sound art curated by musician and writer David Toop that ran at the Hayward Gallery in London in 2000.

Accompanying the exhibition was a cracking little book about the artists alongside a double cd featuring work by those featured. The exhibition was a fascinating achievement and the book was a diverting read but it's the cds that keep drawing me back. Showcasing work by Scanner, Lee Ranaldo, Pan Sonic, Christian Marclay, Philip Jeck, Brian Eno and a whole host more (see here for the complete tracklist) it is a fine release deserving of far more attention that it ever got without being released in it's own right.

So another Merzbow release. This was named after of a sustainable transportation advocacy project in Northern California. With this release comes also a 5'' vinyl with two tracks that Drago found so a big thanks to him for finding it!

Ain Soph - 1984 - I

So one day (yesterday actually) I thought, "why not put some nice and rare ambient stuff to make some refreshment after last noisy month?". Well here's the respond for my question, Ain Soph! Ain Soph arose in Rome in the early 1980's, composing disturbing industrial-ambient soundtracks for their esotheric rituals. The music of their first tape releases is dark, frightening and evocative. In 1988 they released their first LP, the masterpiece "Kshatriya", blending neoclassical arrengements, noise and experimental sounds. At the beginning of the 1990's, Ain Soph radically changed direction, first releasing a collection of sacral-hymn songs, then exploring traditional folk music and psychedelic hard rock. I heard some of their newer stuff and it was not so good from my point of view, ofcourse some people like it but I don't. That's why I bring you their very frist tape! An excelent dark ambient tape that has 4 parts (in this rip version all songs are in one track) with some obvious industrial influences. Enjoy!

Solmania - Psycledelic

Solmania is a project of a guy called Masahiko Ohno. Famous for his home made contraptions and guitars. This is his second album and is fairly good. It's pretty much harsh all the time with screams and everything and an ocassional guitar riff comes by too. The last song is much calmer and far more dronienig and sometimes sounds like complete madness. Anyway, on to the songs.

Tracklist:

1. Psycledelic (7:31)
2. Nitro Mary & High-Side Blues (4:56)
3. Polar Bola (21:29)

MERZBOW - MERZBOX

http://forum.gabber.od.ua/viewtopic.php?id=627

http://www.discogs.com/release/100630
Fifty CDs is a lot of music for any one artist to release. To release them all at once, in a boxed set, is quite extraordinary.

The MERZBOX is just such a release. The MERZBOX also includes a book, CD-ROM, medallion, T-shirt, poster, postcards and stickers and is encased in a custom designed box with metal name plate.

If that isn't enough to make you gasp, the 50 CDs in question are Noise music by Japan's premier Noise musician MERZBOW. Not rock, not dance, not country and western but Noise. This event is unprecedented, even in the history of collector's series of classical music.

MERZBOX is the definitive collection of recorded MERZBOW works, spanning the years from 1979 to 1997. Any less than 50 CDs would not have done justice to the scope and ingenuity of MERZBOW's musical manifesto. All of these CDs will only be available in the MERZBOX.

Masami Akita, the mastermind and musician behind MERZBOW, is also a talented visual artist and writer. Akita has written numerous books, directed videos and produced artwork for nearly all of the MERZBOW releases. He has accomplished in under 20 years what would take a lesser artist many lifetimes to achieve.

Thirty of the titles were painstakingly selected from the MERZBOW archives. A further 20 previously unreleased titles, also recorded throughout the extensive history of MERZBOW, have been included in this musical document. All of the titles show the diversity and development of MERZBOW's Noise music.

"Sound work is an accumulation of pleasure, and the desire for pleasure is endless. Maybe the motivation of MERZBOW is to build a Pleasuredome of Noise - to increase power and difference," explains Masami Akita.

The Boxed Set includes the complete biography of MERZBOW, a book of over 100 pages written by music author Brett Woodward. One of the features of the book is testimonials from musicians who have been inspired by MERZBOW: Jim O'Rourke, Damion Romero, Achim Wollscheid and Eugene Thacker. In addition, Seymour Glass, editor of Bananafish, contributes a resounding endorsement of MERZBOW's talent. The book incorporates over 100 full colour images by MERZBOW.

The CD-ROM, also part of the MERZBOX, was created by notorious Melbourne multi-media designer Troy Innocent. It serves as both a document and an interactive journey into chaos. The CD-ROM includes bonus video footage, images and sound works.

A commemorative bronze medallion, by Melbourne artisan Marcus Davidson, is included in this limited edition Boxed Set. A poster, T-shirt, stickers and postcards featuring MERZBOW artwork complete the collector's edition. The 50 CDs are enclosed in a unique black rubber case, all of this encased in a custom designed box with metal name plate.

The set is to be produced as a limited edition of 1000, a part of Extreme's tenth anniversary celebrations.

Welcome to the Pleasuredome of Noise.

* MERZDISCS - Fifty CDs providing as many hours of MERZBOW Noise music. The collection spans from 1979 to 1997, 18 years of sonic decomposition. Many of the titles were only available as cassettes and have long since been deleted. Five LPs and a CD, which were originally released in limited numbers and have since been deleted, are now reissued in the MERZBOX. Also included are 20 releases that have previously never been released. All CDs have four colour CD labels, featuring new MERZBOW artwork. All CDs are exclusive to the MERZBOX.

* MERZBOOK - Music author Brett Woodward has written the biography of MERZBOW and how Masami Akita came to do what he does and why he continues to explore the realms of Noise music with such vigour. Various musicians and devotees of MERZBOW, Achim Wollscheid, Jim O'Rourke and Damion Romero, have written about their favourite noise musician. Techno-theorist Eugene Thacker provides a text on the relationship between MERZBOW and eroticism. Jonathan Walker contributes to the book with a written piece once included with the "Collaborative LP". Each album in the MERZBOX is reviewed by writer Brett Woodward and Masami Akita provides explanatory liner notes. All of this in a full colour book with over 100 pages and illustrations.

* MERZROM - An interactive multimedia CD-ROM designed by Troy Innocent. It includes additional images, music and video footage that provide a kinetic document of MERZBOW. The MERZROM is both a document and a chaotic device that provides a parallel to the music of MERZBOW. The CD-ROM is both MAC and PC compatible.

* MERZDALLION - Jeweller Marcus Davidson reinterprets primitive MERZBOW collage artwork on this commemorative medallion. The bronze medallion is two-sided and cryovac packed.

* MERZSHIRT - A T-shirt featuring the artwork that MERZBOW has become infamous for. The black T-shirt is large, long sleeve and made from 100% cotton.

* MERZCARDS - A series of postcards that capture the mail art aesthetic that was critical to the early years of MERZBOW.

* MERZSTICKERS - Two stickers with all new MERZBOW full colour artwork.

* MERZPOSTER - A large gloss poster that gives meaning to the term "lowest arts".

* MERZCASE - A 'fetish-rubber' case manufactured specifically to contain all of the CDs, MERZROM, MERZDALLION, MERZCARDS and MERZSTICKERS. The MERZCASE allows for complete portability of the CDs.

* MERZPACK - A custom designed hand made box to house all of the collection. It is complete with a photo etched metal name plate on the spine of the box.

The attention to detail and design that is inherent with the MERZBOX can be attributed to the outstanding work of Extreme's own Art Director, Doriana Corda. It is something that needs to be experienced as much as listened to.

Terrorizer- Unreleased Demo from 1987

Terrorizer was a band formed in 1986 in Los Angeles, California, United States. Terrorizer is considered to be a seminal band in the grindcore and death metal subgenres. After disbanding, its members gained recognition as members of other influential extreme metal bands, such as Morbid Angel (David Vincent, Pete Sandoval) and Napalm Death (Jesse Pintado).

Back From Vacation

New Sounds In Electronic Music

Back in the saddle again..... Disappearance due to deaths, illnesses, parties, syphilis, etc.

Here's a rare little biscuit offered as a hi how ya doin'. Known best, if at all, for being the source of the NWW referenced Steve Reich track, this is an early electronic music compilation.

1967 was the year electronic music broke. Moog synthesizers allowed the bleeps and blorps to come out of the academic labs and hit the major labels. So I guess this here is a last gasp of the old order.

Track one is Night Music by Richard Maxfield. To me, it's the least satisfying of what's here. Meant to mimic the noises of the insect kingdom in Central Park, and it sounds like it. This stuff was fast becoming obsolete by the time this record hit the racks.

Track three is Pauline Oliveros' piece I of IV. I kinda dig this one - it's sort of atmospheric in a way this stuff usually isn't. Still, I think I'd enjoy it twice as much at half the length. It's a bit of an endurance contest, this one.

The reason why you'll want this is track two - Steve Reich's Come Out. This is one of my all-time favorites of the genre. A forward thinking piece that sounds as modern today as it must have when it came out.

The piece starts with a kid in a NY jail telling the story of how he had to squeeze blood out of a wound to get medical care after a riot. A topical piece, then. Reich takes that simple bit of audio, repeating it just to the point of irritation, then pulling it slowly out of phase, watching the voices build into a chorus of phrases.

Then, about 7 or 8 minutes in, it surges into a prime electronic psychedelic wash. Deep and rich white noise. This is the kind of thing Lou Reed was going for with MMM, but with nowhere near the subtlety. No matter how many times I listen to this, that surge as the voices shift to phased noise gets me every time. Check it out.
