Low on HEY WHAT

And here's their review of the album.

From now on we should call the album HEY WHAT WHAT WHAT IN THE BUTT, or HWWWITB for the impatient ones amongst ya. :D

What's the other band? I don't think you're referring to Gillian Welch's "Six White Horses", and I hope you're not mistaking the title of a Stones classic... ;)

I think i'm gonna print that image and use it as cover of a homemade cd-r of a remarkable show of the HEY WHAT IN THE BUTT tour. That's a plan for the future when the pandemic finally allows some normalcy.

If I were on Twitter, I would send the video for "What What In The Butt" to LOW as a kind of love letter. The Butters impression is lovely and a winner, but Samwell's version is pretty cool and legendary, too.
https://youtu.be/G4PvTrTp7Tc

The other "White Horses" I referred to, is a song by MoE (Should have said "songs about horses", I suppose). Was often the climax of their shows around the time of "Examination Of The Eye Of A Horse". Guro would leave the stage and go into the crowd. I've slam-danced with her in those circumstances more than once. When I went to see LOW in Tijuana, I dared to make the trip (and spend the money), because it also allowed me to catch another show by the awesome norwegians. Seeing two of my favorite bands in two days was incredible (I wanted to give LOW some MoE records as a gift but couldn't do it), and Tijuana is fucking great as it was declared by Krusty on The Simpsons. Good times.

MoE's video for "Wild Horses" made by Greg Pope: https://youtu.be/uBU2kay5rHU

So good to see this record being so praised despite being the most abstract of the recent bunch (which I would think wouldn't appeal to many of the critics). LOW sound strong and undefatigable, even as demons descend; according to this review on UPROXX-The Culture Of Now:

Yep This Is Definitely The Best Album Of 2021 So Far

Skuj 09.11.2021 03:52 PM

Compare and contrast Double Negative (which I adore) and HEY WHAT.

Thanks.

(I'll ask twice.)

I haven’t listened to all of it yet, but like what I hear so far, especially Times Like These—what an amazing tune.

I've only listened to the new Low album once so far. Still waiting for the vinyl to arrive, but my ears again have difficulty coping with the distortions...

The Soup Nazi 09.30.2021 12:35 AM

^ Yeah, I read about it on her newsletter. Huge sweet gig for an under-the-radar musician like her! I bet it's gonna be wonderful.

Speaking of, I'm also looking forward to watching Joel Coen's version, with Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand.

Skuj 12.11.2021 08:29 PM

Oh Man, I'm late to this album, but I adore it. Wow. I think I like it even more than Double Negative.

PLAY THIS MOTHERFUCKER LOUD!!! :)

I love the long/epic codas on All Night and The Price You Pay.

Days Like These and More come in like a bull in a china shop.

A magnificent album, 30 years into a career.

More was my favorite song from last year. Just a torrential fucking downpour of a track.

There's a SBD+AUD Matrix on the Live Music Archive of Tired Eyes, the Neil Young cover band that features Alan Sparhawk and some other people I don't know.

check it out! It's wonderful, even though Al doesn't sing all songs
(this is the same recording that's also on Dime)

Mimi is wonderful. I hope she recovers soon. All the love in the world to her.

Severian 08.19.2022 06:36 AM

I’m not really the type to pray, but I’m sending tons of positive thoughts to Mimi.
My mom and grandmother both had ovarian cancer (one was pre-cancerous and luckily they got to it very early, and it wasn’t fatal for either; mom is still alive and well), so I’m really pulling for Mimi. Not that I wouldn’t without the connection, but man. Oof. :(

Skuj 08.22.2022 03:44 PM

Oh. Fuck.

And Gizz cancelled recently due to Stu being ill.

Secretly Canadian has unearthed a tape from their archive on Jason Molina: "The Lamb and Flag I", which seems to contain demos for an intended project with LOW, which sadly never materialized.

Low covers Sleater-Kinney's "Dance Song '97" on Dig Me In: A Dig Me Out Covers Album, out October 21.

Of all the songs on Dig Me Out, I would have said that was the least likely to be covered by Low. Kinda twisted. In a good way. :)

LOW's VPRO radio session from May 12th, 1999. Nifty set-list, even including a song from the kinda obscure project, Hospital People.

Probably my favorite song on that album, and I was delighted to hear Low’s version. It’s tackled with more of an early-Low energy, while I was expecting a “Hey What” kind of vibe, but I totally fuck with it.

what an awesome session that is! Not sure if I ever heard it possibly I did but then many years ago. I've forgotten how much I like the old Low play live.
Too bad it's such low bitrate., can't be shared on Dime. I might track it and upload it to Live Music Archive at some point.

There's a few more Low and related stuff on that site:
- Black Eyed Snakes:
https://www.vpro.nl/speel~POMS_VPRO_...-avonden~.html
- Alan Sparhawk, solo and interview in promotion for the Trust album:
https://www.vpro.nl/speel~POMS_VPRO_...-avonden~.html
Both start around the 90 minutes of the two hour broadcast.

Furthermore there's the You May Need A Murderer documentary:
https://www.vpro.nl/speel~AUTO_HOLLA...murderer~.html
which was made at the time of the Drums And Guns album

I shared on Dime a while back another Low live concert, but I didn't post here I think. You can stream it from from the site where I found it:
- https://www.concertzender.nl/program...der-live-2065/
or from the Live Music Archive site:

This is from 2009 where they visited my hometown while I wasn't home, and they brought some special guests, like percussionists and a choir.

Alan has a new(?) band named DERECHO, saw a poster for an upcoming gig on Low's instagram page.
Found a video on Facebook from a year or so ago, never seen a crowd so wild as on this clip

Just in case anybody's wondering, "derecho" in this case most likely means "right", as in "the right to decent healthcare" or "the right to arm bears". (It also means "straight", as in "just drive three more miles straight ahead and you'll find the bears" ;):)).
