The excellent Ubu Web is screening Derek Bailey's On The Edge, first shown on Channel 4. Well worth a couple of hours of your time.

The series arose from his seminal book on improvisation.

I saw him perform solo once many years ago, me and about 5 other people!
He was a genius.

Also the Karyobin album is fantastic. Thanks for uploading that!

It's also on youtube if anyone wants to see it.

I am very interested in, um, "solo guitar music".. haha.. is that the right word? I really like John Fahey, Sir Richard Bishop, Seiichi Yamamoto's solo guitar stuff, etc. Any reccomendations?

Taku Sugimoto

Japanense improv solo guitarist. Very minimalist approach to playing.

atsonicpark 02.27.2008 03:56 PM

thank you, that's exactly what i want.

fugazifan 02.27.2008 05:46 PM

if you like folk guitar then robbie basho, leo kottke are great
and newer stuff then james blackshaw.
ribot's solo album saints is great

Everyneurotic 02.27.2008 07:46 PM

robbie basho and james blackshaw are way too busy to be considered in the same league as derek bailey...but i see adam also grouped sir richard bishop with bailey and fahey so...jack rose dude!!!!

loren connors is more minimal, more in the alley of bailey.

yeah, i was respinding to bishop and fahey, not bailey as much (except for the ribot suggestion)

Excellent suggestions. I also discovered Sandy Bull, who is excellent.

I've only heard around 10 Fahey albums and they're all AMAZING. Fuuuuuuuuuck...........

batreleaser 03.15.2008 10:31 AM

agata's newer one is pretty awesome.

has anyone heard guitar, drums 'n' bass?!

It's bailey playing guitar over a fairly straightforward drum n bass record. it's INSANE! hilarious and mindboggling.
