Jean Michel Jarre or Vangelis?

Jarre has the riffs but Vangelis has the big washes. Difficult.

Pookie 03.14.2010 07:59 PM

No Clannad option?

demonrail666 03.14.2010 08:22 PM

no, clannad were a different thing entirely - as well you know.

Pookie 03.15.2010 04:35 AM

I know. Apologies.

Should've said Rick Wakeman.

Vangelis scored Blade Runner. Nuff said.

The mid to late 70's was dominated by punk rock, completely overshadowing the enormous strides being made in electronica by Vangelis. It's funny to think of someone buying Spiral by Vangelis rather than Never Mind the Bollocks by The Sex Pistols. Mind you, his previous release, Albedo 0.39, did reach number 18 in the UK charts. Here's a taster.

Didn't Johnny Ball use that for one of his tv programmes? It might have been 'Think Again'.

Edit: it's not the same but you can definitely feel the influence.

atsonicpark 03.15.2010 08:19 AM

Jarre!

You can say that again.

Wakeman seemed to overplay the virtuoso angle quite a bit. Jarre did too but not quite to the same degree. Watching that clip I get the feeling the audience were more into the dexterity of Wakeman's fingers than anything particularly to do with what was coming out of the speakers.

Vangelis has some pretty amazing stuff. A lot of cheese, but definitely some worthwhile ,aterial there.
Plus that 666 2xLP by Aphrodite's Child is a masterwork.

SuperCreep 01.11.2011 09:47 AM

666 + blade runner soundtrack = vangelis no contest

jarre is a straight up foo' by comparison.

PAULYBEE2656 01.11.2011 12:31 PM

2 completely different artists to compare. vangelis great whta he does but jean michel jarre is a true genius in how he brings such old equipment together and launches it into life. admittedly his older work beats his new work hands down but he is truly an inspirational figure in a genre which can often be said to be cold and impersonal.

oxygene, equinoxe, magnetic fields, rendezvous, his live material and shows, deserted palace, geometry of love, and certainly zoolook are untouchable. the comparison to vangelis is unfair. so leave the chinstroking musos aside..actually chin stroking musos should certainly regard jarre as one of the finest musicians ever.

PAULYBEE2656 01.11.2011 12:42 PM

get this dvd somewhere and watch it...fantastic stuff....

other 4 parts of it on youtube as well....

atsonicpark 01.11.2011 05:11 PM

watch jarre's "oxygene 8" video on youtube, I caught it on MTV AMP the other night and it's probably my favorite video ever. his album "the essentials" from 2004 is really the album.

atsonicpark 01.11.2011 05:12 PM

a better question might be:

jean michael jarre or klaus schulz?

I'm going to have to go with Schulz.

Derek 01.11.2011 05:34 PM

Schulz.
