Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet
my ass |
The idea that music "must" be listened to is pretty dreadful
|
Well, there is no only truth in this. I don΄t think everybody should listen Physical Graffiti before they die. But anyway I think these lists are great, because even if you listen music from all the genres, there are always great albums you΄ve never heard. I am going to pick some albums from this list and listen them someday in the future when I have time. I think you really have to listen many of the albums in that list, if you really want to say yourself a serious listener. But of course you don΄t have to be serious listener, the most important think is that you enjoy music you listen. But I think it΄s always good to the people even try to break their borders.
Here are three additions that should be on that list: Howlin Wolf: Howlin Wolf (rockin chair album) John Lee Hooker: Travelin΄ Eddie Cochran: the Eddie Cochran Memorial album. Also I wondered why P.J. Harveys Rid of Me is on the list, I put instead Harvey΄s Is this Desire? or White Chalk. |
Green Day- American Idiot?
No thanks... |
All relevant comments (though Rid of Me is a masterpiece).
Torrenters will find it easy to download and actually listen to it all. I'm up to 550 and I think I'll stop. --There's a bunch missing, and this is partly due to the inclusion of multiple albums by the same artist. Do you really need more than one Deep Purple album? And while this may ruffle a feather or two, I'm not sure one NEEDS to listen to every bleep Kraftwerk ever made. The 50s stuff is especially skimpy. --There are the classics I had forgotten about. "Oh, yeah, Moondance is a great acoustic-soul album. Right, Hissing of Summer Lawns is a billion times better than Blue, etc." --There are the little oddities I hadn't heard before. Os Mutantes was a special treat, and I'm really digging the folk-progrock-jazz grooves of Pentangle's "Basket of Light" album, which I didn't even know existed until two days ago. --I get talked into listening to stuff I didn't think I liked. Most times, I turn out to be right (Iron Maiden does suck. I really tried to be as open minded as possible), sometimes I'm surprised (some of those corny country albums from the 50s and early 60s are occaisonally quite moving). But considering the amount of stuff I've listened to recently, I'm underwhelmed. Is the past 60 years or so of popular music really so . . . I dunno, "okay" but not "great?" Or just this selection? |

I think most of the sixties-seventies material in this list and many also out of this are just great! Maybe you should listen them much more than just once. And you΄re right, nobody should listen any Deep Purple records except Deep Purple In Rock, although most of their albums are really good. |
The list becomes drivel towards the end.
But I often wonder this about music, and collecting records I get this impression: music was just as shit during the 50s & 60s. There was tons of corporate bullshit music that people hated. Yeah there were some good bands that made it to the top & some good one hit wonders, definitely more so then than now. . . but if you look at record bins full of 50s and 60s records, it's mostly shit. My Mom told me that when she was a teen before Dark Side came out, her cousin introduced her to Pink Floyd & nobody knew who they were at the time. A record store owner told me in the 60s the only good brit rock you could get was the Stones & the Beatles, you had to mail order the Kinks. I feel like with music we have a huge case of hindsight is 20/20. I almost never discover a new favorite album when it comes out. It's usually a few years afterwards at least. Am I going to be able to look back in 20 years and recognize all the great music I overlooked today? All the hidden gems of albums that I just refused to listen to because they were too pimped by pitchfork & hipsters for me to give a shake or ones that I just never heard of? Or is rock and roll the new blues? Something that's only really cared about my nerdy white dudes who wish to relive their glory days & where no new innovation exists? |
I'd rather pull the plug on my own life support machine than having my delicate ears insulted by The Good, The Bad & The Queen or Finley Quaye.

--I dunno. Do you think years and years from now, a list of albums from 2000-2010 will be a stellar set? I don't know. Just asking. --Yes, crap is not confined to any era. When you think about how many thousands of albums came out in, say, 1968, to end up with 100 good ones is a lousy ratio. BTW, Sound of Music soundtrack is the second biggest selling album of the sixties (though maybe only in UK). Make of that what you will. --Still, if someone gives me a record and tells me it just came out, I have trouble getting into it. Tell me it came out in 1977, and I'll lap it up. Weird. |
I don't understand a few things:
a) Why did they include albums by people I don't like? b) Why didn't they include albums by people I do like? c) Why did they includes albums I don't like by people I do like? d) Why hasn't this thread got instant death laser words on it to kill anyone stupid enough to open it? |
That's what your Mum said.

I think I'd rather spend my time getting out of the house and experiencing life.

Sounds a hell of a lot better than wasting my time listening to 10cc.
