I like this type of f&a stuff, but I am always really curious by a few of the people who post there. Seems like they all pretty much exclusively listen to this drifty, droney stuff, and whatever, "mild-psyche", kinda odd. On the other hand, this board, and noisefanatics.com, has a lot of people who tend to like all facets of music, you can mention Runzelstirn and Gurgelstock in both places, or mention Autechre in both places, and get 50000 replies. Really weird and interesting... just tons and tons of people over on F&A making big deals about people who hold down one or two keys on a keyboard and release tapes in editions of 1 and shit. The people are pretty friendly, I love posting over there, even though I fail to see the appeal of some of that stuff. Still a lot more listenable than some Merzbow wannabes. I do like OPN a lot, I like the direction this is going in.

Anyway, you've been to f&a, right n'ik? The best thing about it is, there's like thread after thread after thread of cool music like, with like 100's of mediafire links. It's a really cool site, the people are super friendly!

Fangs & Arrows is a really cool place but I always feel like I have nothing to contribute to it (hence my low post count).

I honestly think UUUUUUU is better than any band they discuss on there. Why are there like 39 pages dedicated to Andrew Coltrane?

That might be because they like his music; not sure though

i hadn't been to fangs and arrows until you mentioned it and i looked it up. seems cool.

which pocahaunted release are you talking about?

what i think happens is people see these bands, like pocahaunted, start to get some recognition and just assume: "ah, everyone knows about them now, and they know it." and people assume their new stuff is gonna be really poppy and get a 6.7 on pitchfork and they won't be interesting anymore. and then when that happens, everything you mentioned about pocahaunteds short comings becomes kinda glaringly obvious whereas before you would be more inclined to try and overlook it, because you are looking for the weirdness and rickety charm in stuff, rather than pop.

i dont think this is necessarily a terribly bad impulse, if anything its something like the push to keep searching below the radar. so you can be the guy who posts about something before everybody else does. a part of that is self concioussness about making a thread or talking about a band like pocahaunted that everybody on your board knows about already and being afraid of coming across like somebody who has only heard about them now. but another part of that is what keeps things fresh.

i think there is definitely a side in people that, as you said "don't want to hear things musical". that's what they are looking for in drone or "mild pysche" or whatever. most of that music is at its best when it locks you into a say 15minute piece that manages to stretch out and maintain SOME sort of loose structure for that amount of time without breaking into simplistic popiness.

atsonicpark 05.27.2010 02:19 PM

The album's called MAKE IT REAL. It's like 100 x more musical than any of their other stuff, they've fleshed the band out more, and again, it's gotten almost no recognition. But their stuff where a girl just moans for 30 minutes -- which has its place, certainly, but yeah -- is considered a classic of the underground now or something. Kinda odd...

It's a cool board, definitely need more varied people...

As for Coltrane, I like his stuff, but a bunch of pages are the people fighting and shit.

Marolo 05.27.2010 04:13 PM

I like this, the video is cool. Did people check his mix out?

I think some of the people on there are uuuuuu fans... okay, about 2 or 3 people.

atsonicpark 06.01.2010 12:57 AM

returnal is interesting. I think he is stepping away from the "dude holding down one key on a synth for 10 minutes" thing.

The guy from OPN sent me an add request on facebook today because he said he saw some of my messages on various boards, stuff I've written about him and this kind of music, and said I say things that are actually intelligent, thought-provoking, and interesting... unlike most people... He also thinks it's cool I like Ikaruga.

Also, this dude totally doesn't care if you share his music online.

Cool dude.

ni'k 06.18.2010 04:48 PM

the new album is good.

he should be respected for being able to translate the current vogue for lofi gazey drone stuff into something that works with high production and sounds good clear and crisp. there are a lot more lazy people that should be forced to try this. the first track is cool and barely fits with the rest of the album, but it does have its moments were it kinda drags a bit. still its solid.

atsonicpark 06.18.2010 04:54 PM

Yeah, dude's intelligent, has style and ideas to burn, and seems to have no pretension attached to his epic keyboard noodles. He's DOWN TO EARTH, despite having already achieved tons of success in such a short amount of time..

On the other hand, on another message board I post to, the OTHER big new synth band recently had a member call out their fansfor downloading their work and complaining about having to spend $40 for an overseas vinyl and some other drama. As one fan said "you're doing your best to make it where I never buy another [band name] product ever again."

Also, sent OPN dude a link to my moviez, who knows.. maybe a collab in the future?
