Stupid comments about SY

time ago i was watching the DVD Rock en Seine (2004)...
a friend of mine was reaaaaaaaaaaally boring watching the gig, and he said to me:

HEY...DO YOU LIKE SONIC YOUTH JUST BECAUSE OF ALL THAT NOISE?
(at that moment we was watching "Brother James")

i just wanted to kick that guy's ass, but i was also thinking what to say to him!!!. by the way, my friends likes pearl jam...he dont like other bands...just pearl jam

(Sorry if i had problems expressing myself...i don't speak english very well)

Andrés 04.16.2006 10:10 PM

Don't worry my friend, it's not your fault that he likes peral jam

schizophrenicroom 04.16.2006 11:08 PM

"Ugh, why do they call their albums Sonic Nurse? Why do they have a NURSE on it?"

That's my most favorite recent comment I can credit to a classmate taking a cd out of my backpack.

John Violence 04.16.2006 11:29 PM

Some stupid blonde chick saw me wearing my washing machine shirt and said, "Sonic Youth? Why is there a washing machine on your shirt?" That always pisses me off.

schizophrenicroom 04.16.2006 11:30 PM

Haha, every time I wear my WM tshirt someone will tell me "I don't get it", or "What's Sonic Youth?" or something about how yes, there is a washing machine on my shirt!

krastian 04.17.2006 01:20 AM

"What kind of music do they play?"

Sn@ke 04.17.2006 03:17 AM

"Soni...wha??"

"oh...that's just noise"

"yeah...they are good, I like that song called "Candy My Love".

 ...ahm...ok.

screamingskull 04.17.2006 05:08 AM

i get people saying to me, "sonic youth??......but their not youths they should be called sonic old guys"

that rock en seine was the best live concert i've ever seen. if he only listens to pearl jam, he obviously is not a guy of a very broad views on music. actually i stopped trying to inspire people to get into sonic youth, because it doesnt make any sense. they won't understand it anyway. i have a couple of friends who are into sonic youth, but it wasnt me that caused their interest in sonic youth. but i still like to show "voice piece for soprano" to people who are not really into music at all :D

ploesj 04.17.2006 06:29 AM

'they are old.. can't be any good'

my twelve-year old brother.

Hehe I know there's nothing more funny than sticking "voice piece for soprano", "Pendulum music" or anything from NYCG&F on at a party when everyone is a little drunk and seeing their reaction.

I think the most stupid comment SY fans get is "Thats not music...you just like it because its cool" That one annoys me because they just cannot get how you can genunely ENJOY Sonic Youth!

RdTv 04.17.2006 06:59 AM

the one I always get is "ugh! thats not music its just noise" or my alltime favorite "I dont get it..."

Radioactive Poltergeist 04.17.2006 07:26 AM

"Fuck man, are these guys Scandinavian? They can barely play their guitars"

I loved that one.

Neongod 04.17.2006 11:35 AM

Me: Do you listen to Sonic Youth
Girl: I don't listen to the radio
Me: ...

samuel 04.17.2006 11:41 AM

Ahh, I get the Washing Machine comments too. Plus, at my school everyone hates this teacher and somehow he got the nickname "Sonic Boom." Now, people feel the need to make connections between that and my shirt.

Was she hot?

Danny Himself 04.17.2006 01:15 PM

My sister once said to me regarding Bull In The Heather: "It's a pretty good song, I just hate the vocals and guitar parts."

...

Yeah.

that DVD is awesome...i really like to see shows at day like that one...

greenlight 04.17.2006 01:33 PM

by the way rock en seine, one of the best live sonic youth concerts i've seen

yeah sonic can be distracting, noisy and out of tune for "first time" listener, which is pity. some greatest and significant moments in sy music you wont find anywhereelse in music are hiding behind it all. and unbelieveable that somebody can actually miss that...strange.

i was playing eurocknees gig to one of my mates, who doesn't know sy at all and he quite liked it, which really suprised me nicely. i didn't expect such a reaction after few other experiences. (also one of his comments on thurston was classic - "how old is he 48? I don't believe it! he looks like 18-teen..... hehe.)

Proud Marie 04.17.2006 05:25 PM

My friend Lewis: "There is a girl in their band! they cant be good!"
My friend Felix: "I have never heard sonic youth on the radio. They must suck!" (this is the same guy that listens to mostly blink 182 and bowling for soup)

Everyone at my school: Whats sonic youth?
Me: A band. (I let them listen on my ipod)
Then they start laughing

samuel 04.17.2006 05:27 PM

Don't let them listen to your ipod. Their ears are not worthy! Hehe

Proud Marie 04.17.2006 05:48 PM

Well, it doesnt really matter now, my ipod is broken, Im kinda pissed. i wont let them listen to my CD player. atleast I have 1 friend who likes SY

Glice 04.17.2006 05:58 PM

To confusion is sex: "Yeah, well, it doesn't really have the swing to it, does it? They're not really a jazz band. It could almost be bad free-jazz if they had a sax..."

(Somewhere, somehow, he'd got the impression that they were a jazz band)

HaydenAsche 04.17.2006 06:18 PM

Anything LailaV says about them.

holy-reverb!! 04.17.2006 07:43 PM

"Is something wrong w/ your record player?"

a comment made by friend after listening to a freezer burn.

I've gotten that before...
Here's my favorite:

Some dude: Hey, what is your favorite band?
Me: Sonic Youth
Dude: Oh... I like the Black Eyed Peas!
Me: They suck.
Dude: They're better than Sonic The Hedgehog.

HaydenAsche 04.17.2006 07:51 PM

I pretty much think everyone makes stupid comments. Even this one.

luxinterior 04.17.2006 08:02 PM

You wouldn't believe the number of people at my school who, to try and get on my "good side", pretend to like sonic youth (or any random thing that I enjoy) despite not knowing any of their songs.

One friend of mine had a pet squirrell once, and kept it in a cage inside her house. It would just screech and rattle its cage all day. She told me about this, and then said, "Come to think of it, it's sounds like a Sonic Youth song." I don't file this under "stupid comments about sonic youth" because she does enjoy them sometimes, and I have heard the squirrell and it is a justifiable comparison, depending on the song.

The summer before my sophomore year of high school, I went to my first SY concert. When school started, I was telling one of my friends about the concert in homeroom one day. She then made what has become my most hated comment of all time: "I think you're lying. If 'Sonic Youth' were a real band, I would have heard about them. I haven't heard of anything that you listen to, and I know you're making it all up." When I finally made a mix for her to listen to (to prove that Sonic Youth were not a fabrication of my mind), she said, "It's too repetitive. It's the same thing over and over and over again. The songs were too long." And I'm thinking, you know, as far as length goes, I didn't even put The Diamond Sea on there.....what the heck is she talking about....

Just today I was playing Sonic Youth in the car while taking my brother through the Taco Bell drive-thru when he told me that all of their songs sounded the same. He also does this thing where he likes to sing a Sinatra-style version of Kool Thing, which is just him singing his own lyrics "It's a Kool Thing, yeah yeah, a Kool Thing, yeah yeah" to a tune that is not present in the actual song, while snapping his fingers.

Another friend of mine (who has not already been mentioned) went to see the band with me that first time, and I could tell she didn't enjoy herself, and afterward she complained that there were too many noise breaks, etc. Nevertheless, she bought one of the shirts they were selling, and wears it all the time even though she doesn't actually like the band. She pretends to--either because she thinks it will make me like her more, or because she's figured out that no, I am not the only one who likes the band, and yes, some people do think they are "cool." She does this with the Stooges and the Clash t-shirts too. It's kind of repulsive.

Pablitzen 04.17.2006 08:07 PM

wow...there's lot of stories about stupid comments...i don't want to think that we have a "strange" music preference...:p

Inhuman 04.17.2006 08:57 PM

Me: "Nice, what album are you getting next?"
Friend: "The new atreyu CD"
Me: *snickers a little*
Friend: "Well you have no right to say Atreyu is untalented if you think Thurston Moore is a genuis"

Me: "I really dislike people who say that noise music isn't even music and it's just feedback"
Girlfriend: "Well that's all it really is, just random feedback"

A more than fair comment I think. People are probably going to say something stupid if you say something that's insulting a band they like. And besides which BEP are fucking ace.

Sn@ke 04.18.2006 06:14 AM

ahm...

"Jim O'rourke ruined Sonic Youth!"

finding nobody 04.18.2006 06:19 AM

someone on the old board posted an event that occured to him

(dude walks in elavator with a goo sticker on his helmet)
guy in the elavator- what's goo?
guy with helmet- it's a classic album by sonic youth
guy in elavator- oh never heard of them
guy with helmet- that's suprising, theyve been around forever
guy in elavator-then theyre not so youthful anymore eh?

A Thousand Threads 04.18.2006 06:51 AM

Word. Dumbest comment yet.

_slavo_ 04.18.2006 09:36 AM

My 7year old nephew once told me when I was listening to Washing Machine CD: "Hey, why is the music broken?"

Awesome line, "Broken music"...I will remember that. :)

candymoan 04.18.2006 09:43 AM

some metalhead guy : "they're not heavy enough..."

some one i forgot gladfully : "that guy (thurston) looks like beck.."

A Thousand Threads 04.18.2006 09:52 AM

my sister once (we were watching an interview with thurston)
"well, that thurston-guy, he´s pretty ugly, isn´t he"
that was funny

Jeez, you got it bad.

I can honestly say I've never really had a stupid comment made to me about Sonic Youth. Sure their are people who say they suck etc. without actually having heard them. That pisses me off.

"Sonic Youth Suck"
"Do they? Name a song"
"I dont know any... they're always on MTV2"

Bloody hell have I been watching it at the wrong time.
