love the cover art, love the track list, love that "Kat N Hat" will finally get an official release. Awesome.
|
This
Is A Great News ! |
Super cool. Nice tracklist!
|
I'm very excited for this. And I also just read that this is the same show as Anarchy on St. Mary's Place which already doesn't sound horrible for a live show from that era.
|
Well...that's cool........
but....is it really a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT? |
hopefully it's the start of a steady stream of these kind of announcements.
|
Hope it sounds really shit, like it was recorded on a handheld walkman through the built-in microphone!
|
I'm guessing the sound quality will be really good. The concert chronology references an official mater tape from this performance (Chris used this as evidence to prove that "Kat N Hat" was not "Blooz Blur"). Also, this will contain "Nature Scene" which had been missing from Anarchy bootleg, which again seems to point to the band having a really complete master tape to work with.

Fantastic set list!
|
you mean it sounds better then this?

The recording I have sounds very good, to the point I think it might be off the board. This version also has something from the soundcheck. I wonder if they'll edit between songs... |
This is Rockin'. I was hoping for some news about Kim's Marilyn leggings, but this is good too.
|
August is the best month for live Sonic. It's a fact. I just wrote it down and you read it.
|
Great!
|
Great news! I hope they dig more their archives and release gigs & experimental jams from the past 30 years.
|
I really look forward to this.
BMR is probably one of my favourite SY-eras..such a raw sound and great intense songs.. The LP it is :) |
This is with Steve on drums I take it? Can't remember exactly when he took over.
|
Looks like steve on the cover to me

Ah right, so it is. Cool, most of Bad Moon Rising with SS drumming then. |

okay, being i'm the loser new guy did anyone check this link or what? it's from the exact same show what's the scoop with this cd then? (as in the link) is it from some shitty 3rd or 4th generation cassette or what? like i said, there no way in hell i want to shell out $40 to $50 (in the end) and it's going to be rather lousy sounding. oh fuck, nevermind. the link dont work anymore but it was I Love Her All The Time back cd cover as picture. looked white with green print. i forget what it was labeled as but i do remember there was quite a bit of flutter in it almost like it had wrinkles in the cassette it came from i'm sure SY keeps their stuff in good shape. even if they wanted to pour a can of coke over the supposive Beatles White Album cover album master tapes. but ya, guess i look like a fucktard now but did anyone even bother to check it out? |
after a good 15 minutes, i finally found the picture
so i just hope it's way better sounding then what i heard at that link ![]() |

why would it take you 15 mins to find it? You are aware of the discography on this very site aren't you? if not: sonicyouth.com/mustang/lp At any rate the show itself was recorded by the band to 4track so an official release will surely be cleaned up more than the bootleg was I'd imagine. |
Midheaven (Goofin's distributor) has a pre-order for the record and they have samples of each song.
http://www.midheaven.com/item/smart-...sonic-youth-cd Pretty decent sound for the age and source of the show. |
Double post.
|
Triple post....sorry.
|
Just for the record, NoFuture isn't a broken record, I believe they couldn't post their message due to the link - I just "approved" all the posts and they appear now. Thanks for the link to the samples!
You know, I could've sworn I got an e-mail from somebody who taped both this and the "Hold That Tiger" gig and I don't remember them saying it was four-track...maybe the band has an alt source? Or maybe I'm misremembering... Either way, it's cool that this is coming out, but yeah..I remember seeing "Anarchy at St Mary's Place" at a local shop that *rented* CDs in the mid-90s. Just reading the set list is depressing. I wonder how long this took to put together, "Brave Men Run" was an Eternal bonus, on Mix Tape #7, and on "Give.Listen.Help", all back in '09... |
Chris, I don't know where I got "4track" from... I could have sworn I read it here, but I just checked the disco and CC and neither say 4track, so i guess I mis-remembered. I think I got confused by the CC stating "The cassette liner for the master tape of this show does indeed list "cat+hat"."

excerpt from smart bar liner notes:
³The ideal archival offering would meet a list of criteria: it should be an unreleased and sonically compelling recording of an amazing performance, which not only sheds some light on the known Sonic Youth catalog for the serious aficionado, but also captures the attention of the general fan. Itıs a pretty tall order, but I think this tape from Chicago 1985 fits the billŠ. [i]tıs the earliest live multitrack of a Sonic Youth show known to exist. ³Having now listened to this tape maybe 100 times, I can say this: itıs a killer show. The material was mostly released on the studio album Bad Moon Rising. The album is brilliant, but the material is also so visceral and improvisatory that it greatly benefits from the additional perspective offered by a live recording. Kimıs vocals, more detached on the album, are fierce here. Sheets of feedback insanity on the album which I always assumed to be lucky studio accidents turn out to be actual parts that Lee and Thurston can re-create at will. The album was recorded with Bob Bert on drums, but this show was one of the first after Bob left and Steve took over. Bobıs primal stomps doubtlessly propel the studio versions, but hearing these parts as interpreted by Steveıs systematic pummeling, illuminates the crucial transition to the Evol and Sister albums and beyond. We do get a taste of Evol too, with an early performance of ŒExpressway To Yr Skullı and the first known live performance of ŒSecret Girl,ı plus an instrumental version of the rarely performed, and never released, ŒKat ını Hat.ı² ‹Aaron Mullan, Feb. 2012 |
Was anyone here at the show?

The press release you quoted in post #3 says 4-track. :) |

oh. Duh. Haha. Well... I knew I heard "4-track" SOMEWHERE. :D Anyway, that liner note excerpt has me crazy excited to hear this now. I'm kind of glad I purged all of my (non-official) bootlegs several years back. I mean sure I could listen to Anarchy now, but meh. I'm so excited to hear this full and mastered set and pour over the liner notes and pictures. And seriously, thinking of it as a companion album to Bad Moon -- How Would Steve Have Done It? -- agh. Just so excited. I really really hope that they keep this archival stuff coming out at a steady pace. Like I want 2 or 3 releases a year! :) |
Damn those liner notes are sounding fucking incredible... And yeah... fucking autumn release.. perfect!
|
I hope this is the tour where Thurston screams (through a bullhorn? or is it a cassette tape?) during the intro drum part of Burning Spear.
|
It's a cassette ("scream tape") of the band, I believe, shouting in a silo during their first trip to Europe in June 1983. As for whether it's included, you're lucky I used to be so cool. Sounds like they start it before or during "Flower" and it just keeps playing through 2 songs?
Not the first known performance of "Secret Girl" anymore, to correct my own site without actually doing so. |
looking so forward to this. Any reason to pre-order from Midheaven now or wait and see if maybe it'll be cheaper thru the SY store?
