Your favourite punctuation mark?
Which do you most enjoy using? And for God's sake, [i]why[i]?
Vote now; it's important! |
The semicolon; I use it all the damn time.
See how I did that? Oh yes. |
the dash-- a flexible little bastard-- and it gives good head

Yes, I noticed straight away (more or less). Well done, Savage (I quite like them too). But not as much as brackets (which come under 'something else in this poll). |
Parentheses are a close second.

I like exclamation marks, but they're way to overused. The semi-colon is more classy; rarely do any but the most refined and intelligent people who are more attractive sexually use it. It indicates a multitude of things; it has multiple purposes; yes, it can be mis-used, but you'd forgive such a refined soul for its mis-use. Other punctuation marks are merely by-products of a correct, or over zealous, grammar. The semi-colon is the choice of the Gods.

Aha! PAranthesis, quite right! I use 'brackets' as a general term for the colection, which is rather remiss of me I know. I love using brackets (and especially like using double brackets [like here] for some reason). |
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
semi-colon! |
Semi-colon's in a surprise early lead, I see.
Surprised at the lack of scoring by the exclamation mark, considering it's popularity in terms of usage. |
I can't decide. I need to think about it.
|
baah baah!! the dash was emily dickinson's punctuation mark of choice for a reason-- not sure which one!-- but anyway-- what am i mumbling about? who took my coffee?

Normally that's forgivable, but in a thread about punctuation? For shame. |

I like the semicolon - it's suggestive, allusive, a sultry promise of verbal delicacies.
But perhaps periods don't receive their proper due. They're decisive, definitive, the embodiment of syntactical authority. The semicolon is the pair of handcuffs in language's orgasmic frenzy; the period, however, is the almighty whip. Edit: "syntactical" - I may have made that word up. I'm real tired like. |
Oh, and you forgot ellipses...
|
I wasn't sure about ellipses - are they punctuation, or a device?
Fuck tha police! |

:o:eek::o Forgive me. I'm tired and emotional. It was an error. Gosh. Cripes. It must be serious if noumy's police chappy has called for back up! |
Lie face-down on the ground and put your hands behind your back!
|
i think they're sending you a nun armed with a whip

Noumenal is quite excitable today. Are we going to get to see some skin?

I can never sustain a slew of venemous invective against anyone using the word cripes. LOOK AT MY ALLITERATION MOTHER FUCKERS! |

Be careful what you say - he's got photographs for every occaision. And he's not afraid to use them. |

I don't know... I imagine they must be punctuation, because they're not words. Such is my simple, non-English studying mind. |
Comma!

im pretty sure it's a device...

|
I like my !!!!s.
|
[do these count?]
if not ! |
Semicolon because you can use it to split two main clauses; however, the period is pretty important too
|
I like the dash - for it reinjects speed in speech. Doesn't mean I diss the rest. Variety's a pleasure.
I've got a friend who would never punctuate anything. Reading her makes me kinda angry - why she would deprive herself of playing with the reader's breath I never undestood. She's a Marguerite Duras fan and claim that it all came from there. We had a discussion about the difference between ; and - (some topic isn't it?), once, and this lead me to my current choice - though I cast lots of , & ; to see on the page the rhythm in my head. Don't feel proud when I use ! and ... As if I had missed something in explaining myself. That's a pleasant thread, really. |
