I read an interview with Thurston in Magnet magazine today that said most of the songs from Rather Ripped came from little 10-second riffs he wrote as jingles for HSBC bank commercials.

No wonder it sucked.

I like Rather Ripped, it mellows me out. But I won't say it is their best nor their worst.

nature scene, you will loove rather ripped someday. I promise you. I felt the same way when NYC ghosts & flowers came out. I fucking HATED IT, but years later, I sat down to reappraise it and I loved it for all the reasons I hated it when I first heard it.'

It wasn't up to SY's standards. It wasn't the worst album of the year by any means but there is much better shit to waste my time listening to.

I mean, it's still sonic youth... and there are still some good songs.

But the record sounds too formulaic and forced.
I was convinced they weren't having fun when I saw them this summer. Just going through the motions.

After careful examination, I concur. Such art is rare in these times.

So i hadn't listened to it in a long time until today. I'll admit I do like some of the songs. As an album it still doesn't click.
There's a lot of standard time tracks and the tempo just seems too slow to me.
Also, I've never been big fan of the vocals and melody following each other.

I luv Daycare's enthusiasm. It IS a bloody damn fine record. Every SY release is something to celebrate. Look, ten years from now, they'll come out with a record and everyone will say "Yeah, it's okay. Not as good as the stuff they did in the 2000s."
