Doctor Who

Pookie asked a Dr Who question in the interview thread which made me think of this doing a Who poll.

I'm sticking to the TV Doctors, so no Peter Cushing.

Alex's Trip 08.26.2006 12:30 PM

Omg WhErE iS tEh p0l3!?

Hip Priest 08.26.2006 12:31 PM

It's there! Right above you!

Alex's Trip 08.26.2006 12:32 PM

ooo000OOO000ooooh.....

I see it now. I wasn't wearing my glasses.

Hip Priest 08.26.2006 12:36 PM

When you do a poll, you posts the post first, then make the poll afterwards, so there's a gap.

Alex's Trip 08.26.2006 12:37 PM

I know. I was making fun of the people that always say shit like "uh...what poll?". It is so painfully obvious that you have to wait a minute while the poll is made.

Hip Priest 08.26.2006 12:38 PM

In that case, excellent!

Who did you vote for?

Alex's Trip 08.26.2006 12:39 PM

I don't know what this thread is about, to be honest. Doctor who? what? I'm afraid I'm too young to follow this thread.

Hip Priest 08.26.2006 12:40 PM

'Doctor Who', the long-running British televion sci-fi series. Have you never heard of 'Doctor Who'?

Alex's Trip 08.26.2006 12:41 PM

Nope. I guess it is even harder for me to follow since I'm not British.

no value 08.26.2006 12:43 PM

I've heard of Doctor Who. But I had no idea there were new episodes. they only play reruns where i live. and i don't even know who the actor is. hehe

Hip Priest 08.26.2006 12:44 PM

Oh it's been back for a couple of years. The new stuff's good enough, but it's a different series now - more immeiate, with more action.

What does your current Dr look like?

no value 08.26.2006 12:45 PM

he's a british guy with an afro. he looks like billy wilder.

porkmarras 08.26.2006 12:46 PM

Tom Baker

It's quite popular around the world as I understand it. The new series' have been set almost exclusively on earth, in England. I'd prefer some more alien worlds, to be honest.

Hip Priest 08.26.2006 12:47 PM

Tom is generally the most popular Doctor by some way.

porkmarras 08.26.2006 12:49 PM

Something about the way he looks and he's generally a good actor.

Hip Priest 08.26.2006 12:50 PM

He's a very engaging chap - everything about him is very recognisable, and he is indeed a talented man. His autobiography is quite entertaining.

Toilet & Bowels 08.26.2006 12:55 PM

i have a hard timechoosing between john pertwee and tom baker

i saw a couple of christopher eccleston episodes and i wasn't that into them, it seemed like they were trying to make dr who sexier, what's the new guy like?

Hip Priest 08.26.2006 12:57 PM

My personal choice was between Peter Davison and William Hartnell, but I went with Davison.

porkmarras 08.26.2006 01:08 PM

I don't like the new doctor who because it kind of misses the point in a way.

Iain 08.26.2006 01:10 PM

Exactly. I was never a bir Dr Who fan but the new doctor is an utter cuntwipe.

porkmarras 08.26.2006 01:12 PM

They just turned it into star wars or something. And i'll never forgive them for having Peter Kay on it because he's the most annoying comedian, like, ever!

Hip Priest 08.26.2006 01:15 PM

The last series had a rather high number of poor stories.

atari 2600 08.26.2006 01:47 PM

I've never been a fan of the show, but when I did watch a few episodes (I think back in high school), Tom Baker was the Doctor.
He just looks right to me.

Pookie 08.26.2006 04:43 PM

I think Tom Baker was probably the best, but I have the fondest memories of John Pertwee.

Can I also vote for the joint worst: Sylvester McCoy & Christopher Eccleston.

GeneticKiss 08.26.2006 05:30 PM

I saw one episode/story with Sylvester McCoy...he was kinda funny, but his companion was kinda hot...some blonde chick with a leather jacket and an aluminum bat in her backpack.

But Tom Baker was the best...is he dead or not? I heard somewhere he was killed in a stunt gone awry, but I also heard he made an appearance at some anniversary celebration some years ago...

It could be a seperate poll.

Can I make a tiny point? Much of the McCOy era was lacking, but I think he was a decent Doctor - the lack of effort from the BBC was obvious in production and the appointment of Bonnie Langford was, um, well, you know.

But if you revisit his last season (26, the last season proper until Ecclestone) then you may find that it is of very high quality - every story (Battlefield, Ghost Light, The Curse of Fenric, Survival). On the other hand you may disagree, but I think it's an opinion worth stating.

Ace, played by Sophie Aldred.

Not at all. He currently does the vocal links for a 'comedy' series called Little Britain.

Iain 08.26.2006 06:02 PM

At one point (quite recently) Tom Baker was doing the voice for this BT thing where you could text a landline number and it would read out the text message...in the voice of Tom Baker. It was awesome. But now it's just some woman and thus is not nearly as fun.

Pookie 08.26.2006 06:03 PM

I think you're right. The Sylvester McCoy episodes were incredibly cheap looking and the production values overall had become a joke to say the least.

And yes, you can't ignore the Bonny Langford contribution. I didn't think much of their attempt to provide the Doctor with a more modern, strong, independent 'assistant' in the shape of Ace (can't remember the actors name) either.

Pookie 08.26.2006 06:11 PM

Just noticed you mentioned Ace already. GeneticKiss is a fan it seems.

Sophie Aldred was (and still is) quite charming.

My personal preference was always for Nicola Bryant, who played Peri alongside Peter Davison's Doctor. She was absolutely stunning in the 1980's and, quite remarkably, looks even more beautiful nowadays (she's in her early 40's). Peri was an American air hostess, and I seem to recall that Nicola got the job by pretending to be American at the audition.

Iain 08.26.2006 06:48 PM

I'd just like to re-iterate how much I fucking hate the new Doctor Who. And I get to hear about it all the fucking time it seems being as it's filmed here in Cardiff. Now there's going to be a spin-off show which is set in Cardiff for fuck sake...cunts.

porkmarras 08.26.2006 06:58 PM

Haha.In a way,Billy has finally managed to carve a career that is more interesting than the musical one that she had before.

Hip Priest 08.26.2006 07:03 PM

Certainly, she did very well. Let's hope she doesn't ruin it all by taking a role in Eastenders.

porkmarras 08.26.2006 07:05 PM

Look what happened to Martine MacfuckingHutcheon(is that the right spelling?).haha

Hip Priest 08.26.2006 07:09 PM

Billy Piper as Bonnie, the single parent barmaid with a sassy attitude and a pursuing pack of loan sharks.

porkmarras 08.26.2006 07:13 PM

Haha.Considering that i've disposed of my tv,Eastenders has been good of late.Whoever is scripting at the moment makes it more interesting.Still, not a patch on Coronation Street(not to mention the far superior Emmerdale).

Hip Priest 08.26.2006 07:16 PM

I sometimes watch Coronation Street, and Emmerdale rarely (and really, only to see lovely Leah Bracknell). Eastenders is truly one of the worst programmes on TV. A few nights ago, in fact, I was flicking channels and passed what I assumed was some kind of skit at Eastenders - dim lights, shouting, dreadful acting, worse script - but it turned out to be the real thing.
