The possible truth is that Youth won't release new album year after The Eternal (2009).
New Thurston is coming though.

I highly doubt that a "new" traditional song album will be released this year, i think someone in the group or spokesperson would've mentioned it formally or in an interview especially with all the discussion with the new SYR thats being released. There hasn't been much word about the group recording new material anyways, and that stuff has been noted pretty regularly prior to the last few albums being released or hyped up.

I do seem to remember Thurston saying something not all that long ago regarding the band working on new material. Wouldn't be surprised either way.

I think they'll definitely do work on a new album this year, if they haven't already, but my bet is on early 2012 (or maybe very late this year, like Oct or Nov?).

That was my thinking too. It IS possible they're working on something but don't want to confuse the press with SYR9 (the SYR releases don't get the attention they deserve - if interviews were about an upcoming full-song-album thing, it would get even LESS).

has Thurston got a solo album out this year too?
or was that only a few tracks on limited cassette?

Their general pattern seems to be, SY album, side projects, SY Album, side projects. So Im guessing there won't be an album til next year, or at the earliest, the end of this year..

I think Thurston will be too busy supporting his new solo album for Sonic Youth to even begin to record anything, but you never know.

This is probably the safe bet, they always do stuff in spring/summer because of Coco's schooling don't they? I think we'd have heard already if there was something planned for THIS summer. However that being said, Sway's right, someone (I think Thurston?) mentioned sometime last year that they were already working on new stuff and wanted to put out an album faster this time. So who knows?
