Is it ever going to be summer in Los Angeles?
 

What a trip, gloomy, clouded over mornings continuously since May, ridiculously cool temperatures, no heat waves, it is getting ridiculous in Los Angeles. It feels more like March then August!

The same weather patterns with the jetstream that are making it record setting heat waves in Russia and central Asia, devastating floods in Pakistan, India and China, and sweltering heat in the south and mid-west of the US, is making it unseasonably cool and cloudy in LA.

Usually it is in the 80s-90s with 100plus days sprinkled in across july-november, and yet the June gloom which lasted most of may, all of june, all of july, and now through into August won't quit..

it is a trip. I can't honestly complain, after all who could complain about mild temperatures, but it is just so out of place that I can't get used to it, its getting rather surreal, sort of like Bill Murray in GroundHog's Day...

day after day after day of unbroken gloom in the morning, pure gray skies with fog and clouds, no sunrises to speak of, day after monotonous day...


sorry the rest of the world, but LA is reaping a weird but nice summer while the rest suffer heat and storms...

yeah but I don't live in England. Its not the weather itself that is so bad, in fact its rather delightful, its just that it is so completely out of place,and that it goes on and on and on with out end.

I have lived here my entire life and never seen such an extensive june gloom, its like the Saved By The Bell malibu episodes but EVERY DAY without exception...

god bless those who are getting the worst of this jet stream though, in Pakistan it is worse than the tsunami, with 15 million people displaced and 1/3 of the country under water..

The heat wave in Moscow is caused by a high pressure front in the wrong place, dragging monsoonal heat too far north, and then that heat dives south over Pakistan increasing the monsoons and rainy season of those regions to cataclysmic proportions..

In Paris, it's 20°C, which is a normal temperature in spring. (and I don't complain about it).

Michigan weather ( Jul - Aug) ...day after day after fucking day:
HOT/HUMID = hi 80's
HOTTER/HUMIDER = mid 90's
HOTTEST/HUMIDIDEREST = hi 90's

...no breeze, no rain. This weather depresses me. I love storms, extreme weather. I am a total winter person.

Here in Houston TX it has been 95-99 Fahrenheit with humidity in the "stank crotch" levels.

The climate is changing..but not in the same way everywhere ("global warming"=bullshit)

gloal warming does not mean the temp goes up everywhere equally

it means the overall temp of the entire planet's atmosphere goes up, which creates havok with long-stable weather patterns. it will all settle down eventually, especially after we figure out something to use for fuel and plastic besides petroleoum, but that does not mean that once it is settled down half of all coastlines will not be underwater man.

It is hot as all HELL in Ohio right now. Humid, scorching, oppressive, asthma inducing hell.

not true at all.. the changing pattern of the jet stream and water temperatures which is causing all these weather problems and changes across the globe are all directly interrelated to global warming. The question is not necessarily is global warming a reality, but rather how much of this observed fact of the planet a reality of man-made contributions or just the natural warming and cooling trends which have been part of the earth's ice-age cycle for millions of years..

we are drifting closer to the sun in orbit, and we are tilting closer towards the sun in rotation, so naturally things are getting warmer. Warmer air and water temperatures totally change jet stream, wind and rain patterns..

this is ALL global warming, but is it all man-made? of course not! But does 250 years of pumping out greenhouse gases have no affect on the natural patterns? That is dangerously naivete...

Think about this.

In 200 years we have sucked out, processed, burned, and discarded about 80-90% of the world's accesible petroleum deposits.

Those deposits contained the organic remains of hundreds of MILLIONS of years of vegetation and animal life.

In the blink of an eye, geologically, we have put hundreds of millions of years of captured carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases back into the atmosphere and ecosystem.

he equivalent of tens of thousands of Amazon jungles (the old amazon from 1880, not the current one that is 2/5 deforested) has gone up in smoke in less than 200 years.

Add to that the hundreds of years of mass coal burning and you more than double the amount of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and other such greenhouse gases we humans have polluted our atmosphere with.

to claim that humans and human industry had no bearing on this is fucking deluded and completely dangerous to the wel-being of our planet. it hides the truth

still Rob,today the single largest contributor to greenhouse gases remains natural, volcanoes. The earth is still the largest polluter as it always has been..
further the earth's orbit and rotation shifting fully out of the last ice-age into a warming period are far more impacting to climate than fossil fuel burning. Even our entire history of burning fossil fuels and wood and of course the equally devastating results of our agriculture (slash and burn, soil depletion, pesticides/fertilizers, mono-cultures, etc etc) is only a drop in the bucket to what nature is doing BUT the issue is that nature has produced circumstances which are so close to edge that even a drop in the bucket can knock it over towards the worst..

we must definitely abate our own pollutions and devise strategies to cope with the results of both natural and man-made disasters..

but lets not get caught up in the debate, rather lets just get to work dealing with our reality. The earth is warming, the ocean is warming, the weather is changing, and we must adequately deal with these consequences while striding not to make matters even worse..

the well being of our panet refers to the stability, a very thin, easily damaged, stability that allows life to flourish on what is essentialy the very top 1% of the earth's crust.

and volcanoes have been doing their thing all the time since time began, so they are naturally offset man. there are not more volcanoes now than before. there are the same number on average as have been erupting for millions of years,.

the only thing providing instability to the ecosystem is human use of petroleum and coal, which has really only been mass produced and used in the last few hundred years.

no its balance between the natural functions of our planet and the human needs from its resources. We must learn to live in a balance, or face the consequences, much like what happened Korah for going against the grain..

If we do not adjust quickly, the planet will swallow us up and forget we ever existed much like the dinosaurs who lasted a hundred million years longer then our petty 250,000..

thats not entirely true.. its not that we are tilting the balance, its that the earth's nature cycles are tilting against us, and our own activities only accentuate the problem. We not only need to stop adding fuel to the fire, but we must also learn to cope with the consequences of a naturally warming planet. We can NEVER stop global warming, even if we stopped burning any and every fossil fuel. We can only readjust to the planet's natural cycles of warming and cooling, or else face the cataclysm of apathy..

all it takes is one bad disease, one giant supervolcano, one comet to reduce what we call civilization to hardscrabble subsistence existance

what scientists and others refer to as "global warming" is the EXTRA added warming due to human intervention.

the Earth has been going in cycles between ice age and what we have now back and forth for a long time. right now they estimate that we are in the warming mode, but soon (geologically) it should begin cooling again.

human involvement and our massive output of greenhouse gases may impair the next ice age though.

Hottest Summer in years up here in the North East it's been between 80 and 90 it seems every day since May with minimal rain. We even hit 100 a couple of times. I still like it better than cold.

in reality its not all doom, what I believe is hard to get across from reading posts is that all these doomsday posts/threads are for me sources of optimism and hope, as I am optimistic, not pessimistic at the opportunity to make a difference!

the reality of our world is that the gloomy weather in LA is directly connected to to disasters in other places, and while I discuss the weather here I can't neglect to talk about what its interconnected with elsewhere. I didn't intend this to be a global warming thread, it just sort of happened

actually I'm fairly sure ice ages an cold snaps coinside with a critical point in the rise of atmospheric carbon, and we are overdue. I don't know, more than likely the fact that we are stopping the overrun of vegetive and small animal overgrowth that would probably usually have occured in our rainforests to bring back down carbon levels is the reason?
people will probably die of starvation before they need to deal with cold, the ones who survive that will likely face a mother of a winter and crazy animal system..

no, the ice-age cycle has nothing to do with the greenhouse gases patterns.. The ice-ages are caused by the 28,000 year polar-tilt cycle of the earth's rotation as it tilts closer and further away from the sun in its rotation. This is the same cycle that causes our seasons, though on a long term the over-all earth tilts further or closer towards the sun making seasons more extreme. During ice-ages the earth primarily tilted away from the sun, during melting periods it is tilting towards. To add to this, the orbit of the earth around the sun moves on a 3 million year cycle, with the earth coming closer and further away over-all in its distance in orbit around the sun. Ice-ages get more extreme in periods where the earth is drifting away from the sun, and melting periods are more extreme as the earth drifts in orbit closer towards the sun.

Since we had our last ice-age thousands of years ago, we are clearly in a melting period. Compounded on this, the earth is also drifting closer to the sun on its orbit cycle rather than away, so the melting period we are experience in this time is more extreme then the last few 28,000 year cycles..

add to this burning up almost a billion years worth of sequestered carbon in the form of fossil fuel deposits and you have the warmest melting periods in millions of geologic years, though truthfully we are not at the tipping point yet, as in regards to carbon the atmospheric saturation is on par with levels approximately 250,000 years ago...

it has been a pretty hot summer here. usually around 75-85

My weather has been pretty normal, some say hot, But I haven't noticed anything unusual. I think this is significant.

How are our actions impairing the next ice age, rob ?

Vancouver is fine, kinda bobbing at a tepid 18C, mixed clouds and what not.

I would kill for it to get godly sunny again like it was a few weeks ago. I thought I was going to absolutely explode with all that energy. MMmm.

I wish it wasn't summer here.
