Hip Hop Honors 2010 = Dirty South

I. Am. In. Heaven.

viewtiful alan redux 05.20.2010 07:40 PM

Who is nominated? (ugk & geto boys come to mind... but I'm slightly biased geographically)

noisereductions 05.20.2010 07:57 PM

obviously.

I don't know. Getto Boys music is used in the commercial I just saw. If I had to take a guess -- Getto Boys and Outkast. I don't give an F though. I'm just glad it's happening. Too bad Weezy's locked up. But Gucci's Free. TI's free. I'm sure they'll both be there. I can't wait for the whole thing.

noisereductions 05.20.2010 07:58 PM

BTW viewtiful, it's funny to me that I live in MA, and you live in TX. I listen to Chopped N Screwed music and you don't.

viewtiful alan redux 05.20.2010 08:17 PM

I listen to it, I just think a lot of it is poorly done. DJ screw, DJ Paul, and Michael Watts are great. Too much of it just sounds like a lame screw imitation.

viewtiful alan redux 05.20.2010 08:18 PM

But if UGK aren't inducted... oh man.

noisereductions 05.20.2010 08:23 PM

it's VH1 man, do you really think UGK will be in there? ALTHOUGH, with Pimp C dying and all, I suppose it's possible. I just think they'll focus more on South musik that has hit the mainstream more. I'm sure Luda will be there. David Banner too (who deserves it prodoction-wise). Etc.

Agreed on lazy choppednscrewed. But Michael Watts is amazing. OG Ron C can be good as well.

finding nobody 05.21.2010 02:29 AM

People who should be there: Devin The Dude, Z-ro, Goodie Mob, Lil keke, Outkast, Geto Boys, DEFINETELY UGK
and I know hardly any of those folks would be there. But I can still dream

noisereductions 05.21.2010 07:29 AM

co-sign on Devin. He's awesome. Clipse should be there too.

I'm guessing they will honor Getto Boys or Outkast. Tha'ts my guess. And I'd guess we'll see the following people: Ludacris, Young Jeezy, Gucci Mane, TI, David Banner, Nelly, BOB, Kanye (he's from ATL originally right?), Young Money fam in place of Lil Wayne.

VH1 Hip Hop Honors is for OLD acts.

they are not going to have current acts in there

Geto Boys 4 life

noisereductions 06.09.2010 08:51 PM

so who watched?

J. Prince was honored... so mention of Getto Boys, Devin The Dude, Juve, etc all happened. That was cool. I loved seeing Game spit with Willie D. He held it down.

Biggest shocker for me was the Canadian kid Drake just fucking it up with Bun B. Amazing. His stage presence is insane for 23 yrs old.

And for sure I was in awe of Gucci Mane. The way he tackled that Master P track was unreal. I'm a total convert.

Ultimately, the show wasn't what I would have planned -- but it was commendable. They tried. And I'm glad they did.

wellcharge 06.09.2010 08:57 PM

if a show was put on to honor me, and drake and gucci mane got to perform i would probably kill myself

seriously, stephen hawking can rap better than those fools

noisereductions 06.10.2010 07:36 AM

oh. I guess I just don't know much about hip hop.

Rob Instigator 06.10.2010 09:24 AM

The show was a decent show. My observations

I found the overall show weak. Whereas the Hip Hop honors normally have three or four ACTS that are presented, this was more like a kiss-off to the southern rap labels. Like, "here, we have recognized ya, now shut the fuck up."
I did not like their focus on Rap-A-Lot Records as opposed to the individual act GETO BOYS. I thought it was going to be like the previous Hip Hop honors.
While I dug the performances, I found ti a bit too pat to include 2 Live Crew, Timbaland, and Rap A Lot records all together, considering they had absolutely NOTHING to do with each other, besuides being from a GIANT geographic area that yankee fucks call "the South"
2 Live Crew were terrible. hearing those old fucks try to rap over a backing track that was even louder than their mics was fucking pathetic.
2live crew always SUCKED ass. they were a fucking joke act, a party crew with terrible rhyme skillz and shit beats.

I am just upset I guess. I thought they would actually have the Geto Boys there doing some songs, but I think, besides Mind Playin Tricks on Me, their entire catalog is too extreme for VH1's target audience which is middle class white folks.

Rob Instigator 06.10.2010 09:24 AM

and while I enoy chamillionaire, his "hit" is less than ten years old! why was he included?

noisereductions 06.10.2010 10:28 AM

Rob, I overall agree. It was mostly weak. 2 Live Crew does suck. And it was all to vague with just whole labels being honored. There were good moments (but as I pointed out -- my top 3 moments included 2 that were non-South in Game/Drake). I was excited that Gucci performed so much. I was glad that Devin's name was mentioned. But yeah...

should have been honoring Getto BOys, Outkast, UGK, Three6 and label-wise Cash Money deserves a big-up. I was okay with Master P being honored. I'm not a big fan, but he did sort of put NO on the map and he did make some big waves outside of the South.

Luke sucks. And I know it's geographics and splitting hairs, but most people don't call Miami Bass south music. Same with like Bay Area Hyphy. I don't lump that in either. But that's up to individual interpretation. Technically Florida IS a southern state.

ALSO, I know it's a niche thing, but really the whole Chopped N Screwed genre shoulda been included. I mean, that's a Southern-born extension of the music.

Rob Instigator 06.10.2010 10:38 AM

when I first heard about this I thought it was gonna be like the other ones, a showcase for the acts.

I would have liked to see Geto Boys, Outkast perform, but no dice

noisereductions 06.10.2010 11:16 AM

agreed. I guess I was ultimately disappointed, but felt like "well it was better than nothing." Y'know?

Rob Instigator 06.10.2010 11:37 AM

true.
I think there's no way that Big Boi and Andre will get together for anything othe than some outkast reunion type thing.

I just would have loved to see Bushwick Bill, 'face, and the rest of the Geto Boys tearin it UP!

noisereductions 06.10.2010 11:50 AM

an Outkast reunion NEEDS to happen. Especially since IDLEWILD shouldn't be a swansong.

it's possible, in the last month i've had the opportunity to hear both chuck d and b.dolan mention drake and they weren't exactly throwing compliments, more like apathy and deep hatred respectively

davenotdead 06.10.2010 05:15 PM

what else did Gucci perform?

hey, i'm not the one the one who said you dont know anything about hiphop, you took it there, in fact i never said anything about you at all. i merely commented on some of the artists who performed at this event, which seems like a natural thing to talk about in this thread.

you're the one who brought up hiphop knowledge when only my preferences had been previously stated, so don't blame me for at least picking good sources to use in my appeal to authority :)

Toilet & Bowels 06.11.2010 06:00 AM

i would be interested to see if any good rappers have come out saying they like drake. rappers i think are good that is.

obviously you don't like Lil Wayne or Gucci... what about Bun B? Jay-Z?

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 06.11.2010 03:36 PM

aside from mid-90s Rap-A-Lot back catelogue shit, ALL dirty south rap is terrible, and I singlehandedly assign ALL blame for the decline and destruction of hip hop into selfish, money oriented bullshit with drone/monotonous beats and boring chorus. sorry NR, big thumbs down.
