The misery mixtape

So a friend and I are setting each other the challenge of making the most miserable mixtape possible. I've got country music covered, and things like Lou Reed's Berlin, Jandek and whatnot, but I'd appreciate input because I'm sure there's things I'm going to miss. No instrumentals (unfortunately).

alyasa 05.12.2010 08:56 AM

Can I add Nirvana's Sappy?

alyasa 05.12.2010 09:00 AM

My Bloody Valentine - Blown A Wish

Lurker 05.12.2010 09:04 AM

Perhaps Satie's Gymnopedie?

'Twenty Four Hours', 'The Eternal' and 'Decades' by Joy Division.

Lurker 05.12.2010 09:04 AM

Isn't this cheating though?

radarmaker 05.12.2010 09:05 AM

Malcolm Middleton - The King of Bring

Not at all. I know she's asked the internet already, so I've no qualms about it.

Satie is a really good call, but also instrumental, so not appropriate. More like this or this, that'd be fine.

Glice 05.12.2010 09:11 AM

Good call on Middleton, although I'll probably go for some Strap.

ni'k 05.12.2010 09:14 AM

she's called scout nibblett. earlier the better.

done.

That Dowland piece is really nice. Not sure about the Mahler.

EDIT - Actually I take that back about the Mahler.

Ironic, given that both she and I think Nibblett is one of the shittest things imaginable.

ni'k 05.12.2010 09:23 AM

blasphemy.

nothing fucks with the nibblett.

Low - Shame

jimbrim 05.12.2010 12:10 PM

Red House Painters, maybe? This and this are particularly miserable.

Good calls. Not sure why I never gave them the time of day now. What's their best LP?

Genteel Death 05.12.2010 12:42 PM

Gary Ogan and Bill Lamb - I wanna Live
It fits with your tastes and it's a great song. And it sounds miserable too.

I've gathered
all my lifetime memories of you
My lusty sentiments
that made life seem true
I'm rather selfish
and I mean to be unkind
And you can't imagine
what it does to me inside
But where am I
I want to die
I want to live
I want to die
If I were someone
I would like to be a fool
No one would know me
and I think that would be cool
I'd paint a picture
of my life upon your wall
And use the colors
that have made life seem small
But where am I
I want to die
I want to live
I want to die
But you've got a way
of understanding me
And I just call it one of your mysteries
But you know you've got to
stay close to me, close to me
But where am I
I want to die
But where am I
I want to die, I want to die
I want to give, I want to die

Van Morrison-Linden Arden Stole the Highlights

Misery has never been as beautiful as on "Veedon Fleece"

jimbrim 05.12.2010 12:42 PM

Glice - There are two self-titled LP's, I would probably start with those first, my favourite being the one with the roller coaster on the sleeve.

chicka 05.12.2010 01:33 PM

I Want to Hold Your Hand and when I touch you I feel happy inside it's such a feeling my love I can't hide

Mint, cheers.

Derek 05.12.2010 01:39 PM

Red House Painter's first s/t (Rollercoaster) is one of the best records ever I think.

Oh and Glice, my suggestion was obviously the best one : (

Derek 05.12.2010 01:39 PM

Okay okay
here's another very miserable song

Brilliant, all of them. Also, you've reminded me of this, which I'd hitherto neglected.

swans, khanate? or are they closer to despair than misery?
the first and second tracks from Cat Power's Myra Lee are pretty miserable.

How about Black Metal style misery? or is that too daft?

You're more cock on than most in this thread actually. Swans are on there, what's a good Khanate album to pick from? The only problem with BM is that I wanted songs in English, which is lacking in the BM I have.

Toilet & Bowels 05.13.2010 10:50 AM

I don't own any khanate, so i can't really recommend a good pick, i find them too bleak even for me. also another good record to check out would be lonesome drifter by mammal.
