beefheart vs zappa

just to get on the poll bandwagon and hopefully get rid of some of the hate and rubbish posts that are floating around, although i fully expect this to turn into a slanging match.

they grew up together, worked together but then hated eachother and couldnt even speak or be in the same room. so who is the one for you?

johnnywinternoshow 07.08.2006 07:54 AM

no question beefheart all the way

nomadicfollower 07.08.2006 10:37 AM

Beefheart, in my opinion, was much more creative with his music then Zappa was...so Beefheart.

Lurker 07.08.2006 11:14 AM

I like both, but voted Zappa. I think people are bored of this subject

porkmarras 07.08.2006 11:27 AM

Easy.

against_the_grain 07.08.2006 11:36 AM

Can you blame Beefheart for that?

Yep.....and that's me !!! :D

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 07.08.2006 01:03 PM

Beefheart kicks Zappa's ass.

khchris(original) 07.09.2006 12:23 PM

Zappa. Beefheart wouldn't be shit without the magic band, who made all the music.

khchris(original) 07.09.2006 12:25 PM

Kinda shocked that people picked Beefheart. Do people know that it was THE MAGIC BAND and not him that made the music? Maybe people don't really know as much about Capt. Beefheart as they think they do? I dunno.

Zappa all the way. Nobody can hold a candle to Zappa (solo or with MOI).

You mean "the magic band was much more creative with their music than Zappa"?

Nope. Zappa expanded his music territory where the magic band didn't expand hardly at all. although interesting, they really didn't push music like Zappa and Zappa did it for decades.

Also, Zappa was much better conceptually and his music was way more diverse.

You people need to check out Zappa before making such claims. I have a feeling some of you don't really have any idea the scope of Zappa's music and talent.

What a shame for one of the greatest musicians ever.

EyeballGrowth 07.09.2006 01:55 PM

Zappa was a better musician, Beefheart was a better poet. Infact beefheart in my opinion was a master of poetry. I gotta say Zappa made better music though, as much as I love Beefheart.

The Shiny beast of thought, if you got ears, you gotta listen

Old women sweat, young girls glisten

The extract you got is the extract you got. Hop on the dot. X Extract

Drop by drop, light by bright, night by light

amazing poetry if you ask me, and I'm not even a huge poetry fan

Iain 07.09.2006 02:00 PM

Diverse doesn't always mean good though. When push comes to shove I have enjoyed maybe a handful of Zappa tracks compared to pretty much everything of Beefhearts I have heard (bar a couple of bad albums...and the bad ones are pretty bad)

Zappa is way too self conciously 'zany' which gets on my tits I'm afraid.

jon boy 07.09.2006 02:11 PM

beefheart wins for me. although i do love some zappa stuff but just his craziness and methods alone, plus his artwork win it for the captian.

EyeballGrowth 07.10.2006 07:55 PM

Zappa isn't zany at all dude. Unless you count You are What you Is or Joe's Garage, nothing else he's done is zany. One Size Fits all, Were only in it for the money, Zoot Allures, Grand Wazoo, Hot Rats, Jazz from hell, Uncle Meat, Freak Out, Civilization, none of that stuff is Zany at all. I say Zappa wins because of his classical compositions and guitar melodies. Sofa #1 & #2, RDNZL, Holiday in Berlin, that kind of stuff, and all his stuff with the mothers

Beefheart is close behind though I think. He may not have been as talented as Zappa, but he practically devised a whole new way of making music.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 07.10.2006 07:58 PM

I havne't heard enough of either to decide. A few tracks each.

Daddylikes 07.10.2006 07:58 PM

Beefheart wouldn't have ever recorded a note if it hadn't been for F.Z.

This shouldn't even be a contest.

Zappa rulez!

Cantankerous 07.10.2006 09:41 PM

We've all got a little Captain in us.

It doesn't come down to the fucking ethics of it, it comes down to who I like better. And I like Beefheart better.

Daddylikes 07.10.2006 09:42 PM

I think it's evil Cantankerous that men on this Sonic Youth Gossip message board would proposition you sexually.

It makes me ashamed to be male.

Cantankerous 07.10.2006 09:42 PM

Stop it! You're hurting me!

Daddylikes 07.10.2006 09:44 PM

What do you mean?

I dont know what you heard, but captain beefheart wrote every fucking music part (drums, guitar, bass, etc) on Trout Mask Replica and after. He did it on an old piano, and then Drumbo (john french) would write the musical notation out for the band and teach it to them. So no he didn't play any of the main instruments, but its all his fucking vision.

And who cares that beefheart would not be possilbe without frank zappa, that doesn't make zappa better. Although Zappa is cool, its gotta be Beefheart. Hes the greater artist.

Cantankerous 07.11.2006 01:15 AM

The Magic Band was great. I'm sure you have all heard me say why.
Ry Cooder.

Um...nope. beefheart may have arranged the music, but no, he did not write every piece of music. not even the capt. would have the nerve to say that. Or have you heard of the magic band?

BTW, the magic band carried on without the captain. what do you have to say about that?

BTW, Frank Zappa produced trout mask replica.

whorefrost 07.11.2006 08:16 AM

yeah, i also read that captain beefheart fucking taught the magic band how to play each part for trout mask replica. he wrote all the music apparently. zappa isn't bad, exactly... i'm listening to Eureka by Jim O'Rourke and some of it reminds me of Zappa in a way... kind of humourous...

porkmarras 07.11.2006 08:17 AM

And you are certainly someone humorous yourself eh?

whorefrost 07.11.2006 08:20 AM

that's like saying he taught "john lee hooker and howlin' wolf" how to play.

you'd have to be an idiot to think captain beefheart "taught the players how to play".

khchris(original) 07.11.2006 08:29 AM

further evidence of Zappa's influence on TROUT MASK REPLICA:

"Zappa explained the unusual circumstances of the recording in 1993: 'I was in the studio mixing some other tapes, and the band that's actually playing on "The Blimp" is actually The Mothers Of Invention. The vocal on "The Blimp" was recorded by telephone. He had just written these lyrics, and he had one of the guys in the band recite it to me over the phone. I taped it in the studio, and recorded it onto the piece of tape that I had up at the time, which was my track. The piece is called "Charles Ives." We used to play it on the '68-'9 tour.'"

sounds like a classic ZAPPA TRACK if you ask me.

Next.

khchris(original) 07.11.2006 08:32 AM

um, are you sure Captain Beefheart wrote ALL THE MUSIC???

""China Pig" is an example of Van Vliet at his most spontaneous. Doug Moon visited the house and after he and Van Vliet had played an impromptu version of "Candyman" by Mississippi John Hurt, Van Vliet asked him to 'play one of those 'chunga, chunga, chunga'...' Moon is captured on cassette playing a neat blues figure to Van Vliet's improvised tale of penury with the subject of the story agonizing about whether or not to break open his piggy bank, howling 'I don't wanna kill my china pig.' He describes this glazed pottery beast with decorative painted flowers, and a curly tail, and recounts how a little girl 'used t' put her fingers in its snout.' A decade later, Van Vliet gave another shading on the song, saying: 'It's about how fragile a human being is. I mean the body as opposed to all the forces.' Moon received no credit for the music."

porkmarras 07.11.2006 08:32 AM

He who shouts the loudest has never been heard.Sorry.

whorefrost 07.11.2006 08:33 AM

ok, he didn't write two of the songs... happy?

khchris(original) 07.11.2006 08:41 AM

Captain Beefheart was basically the vocalist/lyricist/poet arranging his singing & lyrics WITH the music of the magic band that sometimes was improved/sometimes not.

Also, without the help of Zappa's production work, TROUT MASK REPLICA wouldn't be the work of art as it is considered today.

I think we all know Zappa still is king.

Next time boys, do your homework before making such silly accusations like, "Captain Beefheart wrote all the music" and "blah blah blah".

Hey, we're all wrong sometimes.

whorefrost 07.11.2006 08:48 AM

you're wrong most of the time

whorefrost 07.11.2006 08:50 AM

does khchris remind anyone else of eric cartman? try reading his posts in cartman's voice...
