Bad Moon Rising

I did a search and didn't see any of those"(random sonic youth album) is the best album ever and has changed my life" threads devoted to Bad Moon Rising so I thought I would create one

noisereductions 08.24.2009 08:00 PM

um. Well I think it's okay. But the album before it and the album after it are so much better than it. So. I don't know. I like the idea of the songs segueing into each other. And "Intro"/"Brave Men Run" is one of my favorite SY tracks. And "Halloween" is sexy as fuck. And certainly "DV69" is classic. But yeah I guess I don't listen to it as much as CONFUSION or EVOL becuz I find them to bar more solid LP's to my ears.

demonrail666 08.24.2009 08:01 PM

it's good, but it's not this good.

notyourfiend 08.24.2009 08:03 PM

Bad Moon Rising is one of my least favorite SY albums...which still means that I really, really like it!

Thats not even fair, you might as well compare it to jesus or the beatles

pbradley 08.24.2009 08:16 PM

Bad Moon Rising is one of my favorite SY albums.

pinkstation 08.24.2009 08:19 PM

i almost consider it a concept album. the songs are drawn out, and flow perfectly into each other like the album is jsut one long song with many different movements. its a really really coherent and seamless album, and i think it deserves more credit. i think this album really shaped where they were going and definetly set the stage for evol.

maybe just outside my top 5

I agree with this.

dionysusundone 08.24.2009 09:51 PM

Absolutely my favorite.

Death & the Maiden 08.24.2009 10:49 PM

It's my joint favourite SY album. I'm Insane is my favourite track. The riff which is played towrads its end and throughout Justice is Might is one of my favourite riffs ever.

samuel 08.24.2009 10:55 PM

I think it's one of the best to listen to straight through (obviously because the tracks go right into one another), but it's more than that. Ghost Bitch is the highlight for me, especially when the drums come in. I'm not the biggest fan of Death Valley '69... I'd love to see it live though. The four bonus tracks really help out (Echo Canyon not so much, but it's pretty cool to listen to it sped up). Satan Is Boring always puzzled me, yet I've been digging it lately. Flower and Halloween kick ass.

^^AND I was going to say I liked it more than Daydream Nation too.

joe11121 08.24.2009 11:05 PM

It's a pretty awesome album. I've actually started liking it more than I did before. Halloween, DV69, and Intro are some of the best SY songs ever. I love how the songs all flow into one another and the cover is pretty sweet too.

Dead-Air 08.24.2009 11:33 PM

My favorite musical recording by anybody, hands down.

acdc518 08.25.2009 02:08 AM

its better than any of their 90's albums, and the 2000's excluding murray street. i really like this period of sy. it seems like a nice mix of their more dissonant earlier stuff, and the sound that they developed in the late 80's with evol, sister and ddn. that and i associate bmr with the gila monster gig. i can't think of a concert where the music suited the setting more.

SYRFox 08.25.2009 04:49 AM

Bad Moon Rising is my favorite record by Sonic Youth, and actually my favorite record ever made by anyone. It took six months of frequent listens to me to realize its greatness, but once I understood it, I loved it to death

Rob Instigator 08.25.2009 08:33 AM

top 5 LP for me. sonic youth fantasticity. The fucking greatest skronkfest around. Bad Moon Rising is so fucking great. That and daydream nation are my two favorite SONIC YOUTH albums, with daydream in the lead

Bad Moon Rising may be their most TIMELES album, for I feel it will stil shock and astound twenty years from now, just as it still does today, even though it is nearly 25 years old right?\

Truly a scary scary album. Love it so muich.

SO I HAD TO HIT IT! HIT IT!!!!!

Phlegmscope 08.26.2009 07:26 AM

I've decided this to be the favorite album of mine.
Haven't listened to it in a while though.

Agree with this. The fugging bass in DV69 is sooooooooo gd creepy. I love it.

pinkstation 08.26.2009 09:15 AM

"brace men run" into "society is a hole" is so perfect. i never even realize BMR ends, and then thurston starts singing.

sooooo incredible

andrei 08.26.2009 09:44 AM

Bad moon rising!

BADD MOON RISINGGG AHH

Forensic Scene 08.27.2009 09:43 AM

It's one of the most creative records I've ever heard. It's simply amazing that someone could think these tracks up. 10 outta 10 >>Perfect

auto-aim 08.27.2009 05:00 PM

I kind of wish they'd make another album like this.

atsonicpark 08.27.2009 05:05 PM

I think a thousand leaves comes close, though it's obviously more stretched-out and "mature". It still evokes that autumny vibe to me.

This I agree with. Neither are near my FAVORITE SY album. But these are the two SY albums I play the shit out of during Autumn. (also obviously EVOL and a bit of Washing Machine)

exploding plastic candle 08.28.2009 02:03 AM

It was my first sonic youth record a few years back (along with evol). Evol was just so immediately engrossing and BMR so tough to get into that I kind of forgot about it. this summer I forced myself to listen to it a couple times, and on the second listen through, laying in bed after a sonic youth show, when ghost bitch ended, I realized it was their best album. Not my absolute favorite, but their best. I'm actually scared of its subtle genius. Every listen through uncovers a new layer of soundscape and emotional dynamics.

tasteinmen 08.28.2009 08:45 AM

i love this album, i love to listen to it in autumn, with it being Halloween etc :)

noisereductions 08.28.2009 08:51 AM

"Halloween" is one of those SY songs I could listen to over and over and over again.

greenlight 08.28.2009 08:58 AM

great album and gila monster...what a gig!

Thor Anders Aase 08.30.2009 01:00 AM

bottom three i recon. signs ogf magic though. evol started it for me...

el duderino 08.30.2009 01:44 AM

Bad Moon Rising, its their best album record!

lucyrulesok 09.01.2009 02:38 AM

definitely the album i listen to most these days. in fact i very rarely listen to any of their other albums now.

halloween gives me a boner.

Dr. Eugene Felikson 01.13.2011 06:18 AM

My most listened to SY album for the past few months. Awesome, awesome, awesome.

Awesome.

Mortte Jousimo 01.13.2011 07:52 AM

This was my second Sonic Vinyl together EVOL and Dirty (I ordered from the musicshop also Sonic Death-cd, it came, but instead of Dirty I ordered Dirty Boots-ep, but somehow they sent me Dirty, that didnīt bother me, because I was going to buy it someday anyhow. I just bought Dirty boots later). You can imagine, in which one of these I was most excited about (I had Dirty already in cassette). But I liked Bad Moon Rising also already then. I think thereīs already something that "burst out" in EVOL, but there is also something from Confusion. I have said earlier that all the first three albums (I count the first ep on this) have something different and that kind of things SY never did again. Bad Moon Rising is quite harmonic, even the noise in it just doesnīt hit you like it do in Confusion. In some net-pages it is described as a "masterpiece of american degeneration". I donīt know, is it correct description, but there is some very specific feeling that isnīt any other album. And I truly think, it has the best SY-cover (I made t-shirt of it, so shame I donīt have it anymore)!!! And it has also best finale song of SY lp:s (Death valley ī69). Itīs also very strong entity. Although Ghost Bitch and Justice is might are not very strong songs, they fit in that albumsīs mood very well and itīs hard to me think the album without them.
