recommend me some music dvds.

so i just picked up pavement's slow century dvd today and am loving it
spent the most part of the day watching thru it.

just wondering if there are any other good music dvds out there i should check out.

iv just noticed this is basically asking 'recommend me a good band... that also has a dvd out' but meh...

oh and the multi angle concert thing on the pavement dvd worked really well. its almost like revolutionary or something.
so any with those would be even better.

Fugazi- Instrument

Moog- documentary about Robert Moog, the inventor of the Moog synthesizer. It's really cool.

Pink Floyd- Live at Pompeii -really brilliant performance by the band prior to DSOTM. Echoes and Saucerful of Secrets are simply amazing

Rob Instigator 05.14.2009 02:48 PM

I love the slow century DVD.

I of course also love the exhaustive sonic youth corporate ghost DVD

I like the Beastie Boys collection double DVD.

atsonicpark 05.14.2009 02:55 PM

We've had this thread but oh well. I reccomend:

harry partch - enclosure 7
all the residents dvd's are worth picking up
man or astroman dvd
jesus lizard live
fugazi - instrument
devil and daniel johnston
all the jandek dvd's

Danny Himself 05.14.2009 02:59 PM

The 'Work Of Director' series are great music DVDs too, each comes with a little book of photos and interviews with the director and people they've worked with. Tons of great bonuses too. My favourite is the Spike Jonze DVD, as it comes with optional Beastie Boys commentary.

two of my all time favs off the top of my head are the butthole surfers "blind eye sees all" and the angry samoans "true documentary". those are just two top 20 bands of mine who i adore the entire aesthetics of. the buttholes it half amazing performance circa locust and half intrview with whole band getting high, drinking, smoking cigs, and eating junk food in bed together. the angry samoans has so much stuff that id never be able to see otherwise.

i really like the "people who make noise" dvd that came out last year about the portland experimental scene. Especially for the Smegma (another top 20, maybe 30) and Argumentix (no one is doing industrial noise punk like this anymore, awesome) sections.

atsonicpark 05.14.2009 03:43 PM

the people who make noise dvd has the superhot kitty midwife in it, so I reccomend that as well.

Derek 05.14.2009 03:50 PM

i love meth

Rob Instigator 05.14.2009 04:14 PM

I second the Blind Eye Sees All
I have the original VHS and it rocked me for decades. now I have the DVD and I put it on "karaoke" mode where the words apopear below as gibby sings and some of the lyrics I neve understood scare me

Trasher02 05.14.2009 04:17 PM

Latest Joy Division DVD is awesome.

Rob Instigator 05.14.2009 04:21 PM

which is that thrasher?

Trasher02 05.14.2009 04:23 PM

It was just called "Joy Division" I think. Had the cover of unknown pleasures on it. The dvd is really not that old so I'm guessing it's the latest release. Got it for my birthday but I FUCKING LOST THE DVD... I'm gonna hate myself forever for losing it...

Savage Clone 05.14.2009 06:23 PM

That "Eye" where they go to Stapleton's place is fantastic.

I also really enjoyed the Andreas Martin one, but that will likely appeal most to fingerstyle guitar aficionados...

ni'k 05.14.2009 08:45 PM

i think thrasher is talking about the joy division documentary dvd. its probably the best music related film ive ever seen.

I bought it for insane price and all it was full of was 4 bearded shy people walking out in the windy pastures and talking quitely to the camera plus some occasional song here and there.
Boring to death.

If you're into jazz, Charles Mingus: Triumph of the Underdog is a fascinating documentary.

The Eye series looks interesting. Thanks for the tip.

Not seen the Zazen Boys one, have you seen asp?.

atsonicpark 05.17.2009 07:40 PM

I may have seen it. When was it made? Because I saw one from a few years back that mainly covered the first album/first EP and it showed the band playing live and recording in the studio. The part where they all do vocal harmonies together really blew me away.

That reminds me.. there are TONS of excellent Number Girl dvd's..

me. 05.17.2009 07:53 PM

Guess it could be the one you've seen as it came out 2005, and the back cover has them sitting at a mixing desk..wouldn't mind giving that a watch.

atsonicpark 05.17.2009 08:01 PM

Yeah, I've seen that one then, got it off some dude on slsk, watched it once and deleted it... but it is really really good. It was around an hour long I think. Worth a watch definitely.
