Depeche Mode!!!
Yo yo yo
Here be the new Depeche Mode video for song WRONG. Pretty creepy stuff. funny song. You can also tell us what you think of the band. yep. |
I think they had a pretty incredible career. I didnt hear the last one (the Angel one?) but I have a lot of their albums. Their 80s-mid 90s run was pretty unstoppable.
|
My fave is of course "Violator"; amazing. I also own "Songs of faith and devotion..."
Did you check out the video? |
I used to be a really big fan of this band, back in the 80s when I thought they were the only band in the world (note: I was born in 1980). There are still sparks of this glorious past remaining in my head, although my active interest in this band ended with Violator.
However, their late 80s output (Some Great Reward and Music For the Masses) is untouchable. |

VIOLATOR is amazing. Songs of Faith is as well. You need: MUSIC FOR THE MASSES, BLACK CELEBRATION, SPEAK & SPELL, EXCITER... awe hell. Just get everything that isn't a live album. |

Wrong. 101 is too amazing to be missed out. |
I dnt have that one. But the live albums I heard were marred by weird ablibbed "whooo's" and stuff.
I hate to nitpick, but everything counts in large amounts. |
their last albums were good.. they're a good band.
|
I knew a stripper who would always dance to 'em. Hmm. Wonderful.
Then she started to dance to country. I blame a boyfriend. |

I have loved the d3peche mode sinc3e 1988 or so.
black celebration violator music for the masses three must own LP's!!! |
and i thought I was gonna get bashed for starting this thread. Where are the haterz?
|
My wife has the remix boxset.
|
Wrong is a really awesome tune and the video fucking blew my mind. I love their dark, elegant sound. Apart from the most SY LPs I think Violator is one of the best albums ever released. In fact Depeche mode were a major influence on most of the EBM artists or bands I listen to.

what's EBM? |
Ectasy, Bong & Mushrooms.

as if we didnt already have enough sub-sub-sub genres, we need to actually classify them based on which drugs go with them? C'mon. |

Electronic Body Music, a subgenre of modern Industrial and Aggrotech. While most Aggrotech artists sound well "aggressive" and harsh EBM is kind of "softer". I would consider it "Advanced Synthpop". Popular EBM artists: Nitzer Ebb, Front 242, Die Krupps, Assemblage 23 |
gold gold gold gold
church church church church guns guns guns guns FIRE! FIRE! FIRE! |
^^^ I <3 Nitzer Ebb (coincidentally enough, I saw them open for Depeche Mode...back in the day)

nah, mine looks like the first one. I honestly don't know which version I have, but I'm fairly certain I got it before the album even came out. either way, it's sitting at the top of my closet, lonely and unused. |
great video & a pretty good tune as well. my favourite album is speak & spell. the only album of theirs that didn't realy grab me was exciter and i haven't heard playing the angel.
|
I don't mind them, but I don't want to listen to them, if it makes sense. They seem to have some of the nicest fans.
|
Goths or ex-goths are some of the nicest people.

I was a huge DM fan in my youth. Still enjoy some of the 80s stuff. I can still appreciate Violator, although at times it is bit too emotionally overwrought.
Revisiting the 80s stuff now, and discounting A Broken Frame as an album too trifling (aside from its beautiful cover art), it seems that Black Celebration has not aged as well as I thought it would. The title track, "Stripped", and "Fly on the Windscreen" still sound good to me, but much of the rest is just embarrassing. I used to think that was the best DM album. Now I'm of the mind that Construction Time Again, Some Great Reward, and Music for the Masses are the essentials. Everything from Ultra and thereafter was just rubbish...sorry! I'll give this new one a listen-to, though. Also, as a record, 101 is terrible. As a movie, it's pretty fun. And I was actually there at the Rose Bowl show! I was about 100 rows back surrounded by screaming girls. My older cousins took me along, figuring I'd be so stoked. But just a few weeks before, I had seen my very first live show....a backyard pool-party event with Savage Republic which was so sublime and incredible. I was really excited that Wire opened the Rose Bowl show, but no one seemed to care. It didn't matter that Wire were only playing songs from their last two (pretty bad) albums and nothing from the great first three albums...I was still bummed that no one seemed to show any respect. This may have contributed as much as anything to my Northern California supremacist attitude about Angelenos. |
It seems that I'm the only one who really likes Ultra.
|
love em up to about 1990.. black celebration and violatot are fantastic albums and 101 has to be in the top 3 live albums of all time.

at times i like them and at times i hate them. i think when they get overplayed on someone's ipod at work then that's when i hate them (the same damn three songs too). i remember really liking "black celebration" at one point in my life.

Ditto. That track ruined them for me. The 101 film they made is incredible. |
ultra's first side is GREAT
|
Haven't heard Ultra but the last one Playing The Angel was good. John The Revelator's really noisy, turn it up loud and RAWK. Not sure how I feel about "Wrong" but I heard another song from the album that was really good.

All I have to say about this topic is...
Let your mind do the walking And let my body do the talkiiiiing Let me show you the world in my eyes |
I think I'm about to dust off my old Depeche Mode CDs and give them all a listen tonight.

Let's not forget Meat Beat Manifesto. DM influenced so many bands after them. Gods, I say! |

that's kind of the overall aim of this thread. let's get it on. |
