The Far Too Amazing SF and Fantasy Art Thread

Really epic SF and Fantasy art has been ignored on this messageboard for far too long.

Is that last one Bespin or Corruscant? or neither?

demonrail666 12.09.2008 01:51 PM

I don't think it's either

I'd say inspired by Bespin and Coruscant and other city-planets in SF.

I don't have time to make_many_picture_links, but http://www.peltorro.com/gallery.htm is one of my favorite sites.

Isn't Frank Franzetta considered to be one of the masters and innovators of the fantasy artwork medium? I saw a great documentary on him a few years back which was really good.

Anyway I was going to post some H.R. Geiger stuff and then stumbled upon this Polish artist's work by the name of Zdzislaw Beksinski (is that not one of the coolest names ever?). Pretty bleak and disturbing work, which I love.

demonrail666 12.09.2008 02:54 PM

Yeah, that's awesome that one.

I also like the sort of moodier fantasy stuff, even if it is totally cliched:

If this picture were a band, they'd be loud.

This will only end one way: with me hunting for my ten sided dice!

Rob Instigator 12.09.2008 03:28 PM

I love the art from the covers of old Robert E Howard Conan Stories.

In all seriousness, I'm more into the 50's space age stuff.

I have a book (those cheap taschen paperbacks) consisting of 30's-50's conceptual illustrations of the future. It's wonderful and utterly naive stuff (i.e. people living in space cities, but still using operator to connect their calls).

Most of the stuff in this thread looks like concept art for videogames and films.

That sounds awesome. I love that sort of art.

Savage Clone 12.09.2008 10:37 PM

This thread is the best thing that's happened to me this week.

alteredcourse 12.09.2008 11:35 PM

Same. I love, love the gunslinger picture. And pretty much every piece Ive never seen here.

Theres a lot of Robert E Howard inspired work isnt there?

Dead-Air 12.09.2008 11:36 PM

I suggest y'all check out this guy UTODYSTOPIA's Flickr page!

Some of that stuff is lovely. There's definitely something to be said for the excitement of not knowing. Once man had actually landed on the moon, while one part of his imagination could explode, another inevitably had to close down.

There's definitely something to be said for ignorance, when it produces stuff like this:

The always delightful Syd Mead.

demonrail666 12.10.2008 07:12 AM

Didn't he do a lot of the designs for Blade Runner?

Yup. City scapes, vehicles, etc. The overall future look.

demonrail666 12.10.2008 07:32 AM

In terms of film, i think my favourite designs were for 'Things to Come':
