Question for over-25s
Do you ever feel that you shouldn't get into a newer band simply because most of their fans are in high school or college and it might make you look immature?
|
Not really, I still listen to many if not most of the same bands I listen to when I was in high school and college. Isn't that the audience that much of the indie, and underground music is trying to appeal to anyways?
|
I hate most bands with members under 30.
Because they suck. ( not sure it's a relevant answer to the question ) |

What an immature question! |
If I narrowed my listening down to bands of my age I'd be stuck playing my old Wedding Present albums.
|
I really do not care how old the members are. you could turn that over and say SY are older then my parents...except steve
|
short answer---no
long answer- no, why even ask the question.. age means fuck all in the greater scheme of things.... im 33 and i am beginning to get these guys who are 18 coming up to me and saying "yoou like that aincent band pixies dont you"!!! fuck that shit, its life, get over it! |
I'm too cool for any band, so I don't have to worry about such things.

never. a band's fanbase is of little consequence when i am determining if they are worth my time and money. i'm 42 anyway, so i'm used to being older than most people in the room (obviously depending on the band, but for that Deerhunter/TNV/Vivian Girls show last week, i was an extreme outlier). |
Never mind about band members or fans, it's when you discover you're older than your local MP that anxiety really starts to set in!
|
I've noticed that the musicians I like these days tend to be a fair whack older than me, but I've got no worries with listening to stuff by bairns. Seems a bit of a ridiculous question.
|
You feel musical insecurity. Your self-esteem is low. Listen to whatever you want, fuck!
I feel ashamed I like Franz Liszt because most of his "fans" are over 60. |
it's when people say stuff like this (first post) that leads me to assume that they listen to music to fit in rather than because they like it, and it makes me want to slap them silly.
|
To OP - bollocks to that, if you like said band, then who cares about who listens to them? Granted, it be a tad problematic if said band is Skrewdriver, mind...
|
people who listen to skrewdriver need a slap n all

i hardly have stopped listening to most of the music i liked since i was little.
i don't shed, musically speaking. |
Meh
|
I guess the short answer is, "no".
|
I LOVE when I see young people making music, and am likely to be much more tolerant of it than music being made by older people, because they are being brave and trying things out. Of course most of my favorite musicians have been around the block quite a few times though.
I could give a fuck what age an audience is. Last time I saw Sonic Youth, the crowd was broken up between the all ages section by the stage and the drinking section in the balcony. Those kids in their 20s and 30s looked like fucking bloated dinosaurs sitting up in the balcony while I was down rocking out right next to the band with the high school crowd. There was a 12 year old not far from me. |
High School ? Is it OK to put on my romper room and Barney records and sing along ? LOL
One of the beautiful things about SY is that they appeal to pre-teens to 60+. Each show I've been to, I'm surrounded by the age gamut. Sorta like the Beatles, if there ever was a comparison to be made about age and the 2 bands. Age has absolutely NO bearing on my enjoyment or attendance. I do stay away from The Pit nowadays though, I don't want anymore swelling on the brain from physical contact. I'll leave the swelling for the VOLUME intensity !!! Crank them mo'fuckin' amps !!!!!! Ear plugs are for pussies !!!!!!!!!! |
I dnt take age into consideration at all. I like what I like.
|
no i'm only concerned about a musician's genetic purity and predisposition to telepathy.
|
I think GeneticKiss is Robert Smith, or at least shares insecurities with the man.

Well theyve been aquiring underground music fans for almost 30 years now, thier oldest fans could prolly be 70 by now. Fact is, if you've liked underground music from 82-now, you know the name Sonic Youth. |

I wish...sometimes. |

no. but if i think about it, there's hardly any newer band in my faves list. |

Although that may seem like a silly question, I have often run into that dillemma. Even subconsciously, I think I immediately write off any band that formed later than '82 (with a few exceptions of course) but then I got over it and started listening to Interpol. |
in honest response to the question, if I go see an unknown band play a show with 6 other bands at the small stage of a local club, and the crowd that showed up to see them looks like al l their fruiends from their high school, it does affect my view of them.
for one, I am more lenient if they suck. I think "oh, they're just kids and will get better with time". Oddly enough, it also makes me less likely to expect anything good though... |
this thread was started by a future paedo.
|
I resent that.

You know, there's something realy enjoyable about going to see ska/ punk bands whose hay-day was in the early 80s. I've seen Stiff Little Fingers about 9 times because it's really enjoyable to let the old boys let their (lack of) hair down. I really admire when the older gents get into a local hardcore show for kids half their age (I've seen bands' parents moshing before - amazing). Some of the 'younger' people might care, but that wasn't ever what it was about. |
as long as there are chicks who want to hook up thats all that matters.
|
i don't really go to shows anymore so it doesn't bother me what age people are.
i find that the shows i do go to the people are around my age give or take a few years. |

quite the opposite. I take my cues from Menudo. once yr voice drops....YR OUTTA HERE! |
All this shit about people feeling "immature" about listening to young bands should a. grow some balls and b. research and eventually listen to an album called "Haunted House" by an artist called Pyha.
