Low (the band, not the Bowie album)
I was driving with a friend this morning, when "Over the Ocean" came on our college radio station, and I said "I constantly forget how much I love this band." She had the nerve to say... "Low are just a poor man's Yo La Tengo." I just about pushed her out of the moving vehicle, because:
1) I have never even thought of comparing Low and YLT before, because they are totally different bands 2) Low is not a "poor man's" anything, imo... they're a class act all their own Anyway... who else loves these guys? Today's incident inspired me to pop in the Christmas EP to help get me into the holiday spirit. P.S. If all you're going to say is "they're boring", then save it, 'cause everyone's heard it before P.S.S. I know there's going to be at least one of you who is defiant and says "they're boring" despite my warning, 'cause y'all are wacky like that. |
rather listen to the bowie album.
|
Low are slow and low.
And boring. |
Dull band. I like a song or two from them, but couldn't stomach an album.
|
i'm sorry to have to agree with the above comments. i'm supposed to like this band but in fact i don't.... I have heard every LP and the ones i like well enough are trust, great destroyer and drums and guns, so later stuff. The early stuff bores me to tears. + not that I had ever come to think about them in such terms but a poor mans YLT is not irrelevant... meh. they do have good stuff, but man is it LOWLOWLOW.
|
I'll apparently be the first to agree with the OP and say that I love Low, especially their really minimal stuff, like Things We Lost In The Fire.
And while I see the similarities between them and YLT (although I'd say you need to also throw in a little Pedro The Lion to match), I wouldn't consider them a "poor man's version." Low definately holds their own ground. And no, I do not think they are boring :) |
They strike me as more of a poor man's Galaxie 500 that forgot to take their Zoloft than a poor man's YLT.
|
I really, really like the Christmas album.
THINGS WE LOST IN THE FIRE is good. I never explored much beyond that. Those 2 albums seemed to satisfy my Low curiosity enough. |
Fragile beauty, beautifully fragile.
|
awesome band, they've made some really powerful music.
much as I like Galaxie 500, Low are much, MUCH better. |
Awesome spectacle, spectacularly awesome.
|
Never been a huge G500 fan...
|
Slip slap, waka-waka.
|
Superbly claustrophobic, claustrophobically superb.
|
Workin' hard, or hardly workin'?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Seriously though, Low is great. |
I don't listen to Low very often, but I really enjoy it when I do. There's a lyrical parity to them that's entirely lacking in substance when others do it.
Having said that, I really want to contradict the sanctimonious arse of the first post. |
i love low!!!! one of my very fave bands, love them to death.
i love yo la tengo, but i have to admit they have many very boring songs. i love galaxie 500, they are sad and beautiful and annoying all at the same time. |
fucking.
good. band. |
I have never heard of Galaxis 500
|
You'll love 'em. I saw Damon and Naomi with chappy from Ghost a few years ago. 'Mazing.
|
Let's all have group session filled with used handkerchiefs, profound and buried secrets, Nigerian guinness, and stilton cheese. Let's mix said session with some lamented, curtailed memory's, vivid skies, sheep dog's and you will encounter the country of ''Low''. A vast and wondrous land filled with top-notch scarves of the finest wool and corduroy jackets.
All detailed description aside, I like Low and I really liked Drums and Guns. Yo La Tengo are either an ace crew, or they are margerine. Galaxie 500 were good, but also hit or miss. |
I dont listen to them much anymore but they used to fucking make me weep. Esp lullaby. over and over. Though the bands relation to ex lover was most likely the first cause, the music is still undeniably heart wrenching if you let it in.
I still have this wrapped up on my shelf that I bought in London four years ago for the lover fan as a gift and never gave it. http://www.stylusmagazine.com/review...d-rarities.htm I think I might put some low on now. |

"your poison" and "murderer" almost make up for the rest of the failed experiment that passes for the bulk of that album. |
Yuk... I just listened to Great Destroyer for the first time in awhile. The music itself is fine... but the mastering of the CD is absolutely hideous.
Distortion/clipping all over the place. It's gonna be hard for me to enjoy this disc in the future, and I can't believe I never noticed how crappy it sounded until now. |
i could live in hope is great

Yeah I like Low a lot, but I skip a lot of their tracks. I have all their albums past Secret Name but I'm sure their early stuff is better. Drums and Guns is probably my favourite. As far as I'm concerned, when Low make a good song, it's beautiful. When they make a boring song, it's rather boring.
|
Delicately touching, like taking a walk in autumn with a thin dog for company, while leaves fall gently on top of your head. Fragile avant-emocore.
|
Sensuously ethereal songs in a fizzy cocktail of exquisite emotional confessions.
|
A leaf falling in your hot cider.
|
Tear-drenched vignettes of resigned loss.
|
C-c-c-combo Breaker

A circle of light surrounds the intensity of desire, whilst the ghost of Albert Ayler plays a sad-as-fuck tune on an alto sax. |
Red candles flicker and drop wax, as the song of the cold, foreign shore surround you.

i likes 'em. it's kind of a shame they're a lot more popular now because i used to like to go to see them when they would play smaller venues and the crowd would all be dedicated fans who would keep quiet, nowadays they play bigger venues and i don't imagine their music to work as well in places that can hold a couple of thousand people
