What do your friends listen to?

I, for one, know perfectly well how difficult it is to find friends who's music tastes equal up with mine.

Most of my friends are into douchebaggy deathcore (breakdowns and all), mass-produced "indie" bands and then of course there's my lovely girlfriend and her obsession with The Dead Kennedys (her tastes are the most tolerable of the bunch).

Feel free to post pics. To make the thread fun. Maybe of favorite bands or of your friends! =)

EMMAh 07.02.2008 11:48 PM

All my friends have very different tastes in music.

I could go on listing genres, but I'm far too lazy.

Everyneurotic 07.02.2008 11:57 PM

some friends listen to untolerable mainstream shit while others listen to untolerable underground shit.

nah, to be fair "eclectic" might be the word for it.

my ex was furious when i told her i despise the killers and clap your hands say yeah, she made me remind her what bands both of us liked.

EMMAh 07.03.2008 12:00 AM

Are you kidding, there's a bad called Clap Your Hands Say Yeah?

Everyneurotic 07.03.2008 12:06 AM

more like a horrible indie bollocks band called clap your hands say yeah.

acousticrock87 07.03.2008 12:19 AM

All different. Of my two closest friends, one listens to mostly SRV, blues, jazz, R&B, and the other listens to classical, techno, and operatic-type stuff. But they're all pretty open for the most part. My last girlfriend listened to Radiohead and Snow Patrol type stuff.

EMMAh 07.03.2008 12:19 AM

People must really have a hard time thinking of bands names.

demonrail666 07.03.2008 12:25 AM

Mine are varied in their tastes, ranging from Stoner Rock and rap, through Yngwie Malmsteen to Sleater Kinney. I rarely talk to my friends about music.

fugazifan 07.03.2008 12:28 AM

most of my friends listen to pretty good stuff. my best friend listens to the same music that i do (well mostly)
and most my other friends listen to pretty good stuff.
jazz
some alt rock
punk
post punk
flamenco

none listen to emo or any of that shit and none listen to rnb or shitty rap or pop, at least not usually

cryptowonderdruginvogue 07.03.2008 01:03 AM

very stupid music

Cantankerous 07.03.2008 01:10 AM

music.

Dead-Air 07.03.2008 01:14 AM

I have friends I made through music, so those tend to like a lot of the same stuff I do. They can surprise you though, like the guy in my band who's the weirdest and noisiest telling me how much he likes Steve Miller.

I have other friends I made other ways, such as photography for instance. Some of them like shit like U2 or whatever that I can't tolerate, but then I only know that from reading their profiles online and stuff. I don't usually listen to music with non-music friends for obvious reasons.

Death & the Maiden 07.03.2008 01:26 AM

One of my friends only listens to Iron Maiden and people like Malmsteen, Satriani etc.
Another likes some stuff from a compilation I made for her - The Verlaines, Thurston Moore, The Cure, The Smiths, Suede, The Sugarcubes.

Cantankerous 07.03.2008 01:29 AM

some people call me maurice
woo woo

that's steve miller isn't it?

EMMAh 07.03.2008 01:34 AM

Yes, yes it is.

atsonicpark 07.03.2008 01:39 AM

Thinking of my friends and acquaintances, they all have pretty diverse tastes... the only bands we can all agree on are the misfits, secret chiefs 3, dead kennedys, the smiths (who I don't really like but can tolerate), melt banana, joy division, the residents, polysics, and cerberus shoal...

Thinking of 5 random pals for a moment... One of my good pals is into a lot of electronic shit, and amprep type shit but also loves mainstream stuff like the Killers... cool dude... another pal of mine is mainly into throbbing gristle, jandek, early sonic youth, einsturzende neubauten, merzbow, the residents, legendary pink dots, but one of his all time favorite bands is CHEVELLE. No kidding... very weird but awesome dude, got me into a lot of cool shit.. Let's see, another friend of mine is mainly into sun city girls, amps for christ, my bloody valentine, etc... noisey, vaguely folkly, eclectic kinda stuff usually... one is mainly into pop punk and stuff like THinking Fellers type stuff... and one is into just NOISE, wolf eyes hair police merzbow all this shit.. he almost exclusively listens to doom, drone, etc.

So, I'm pretty lucky to be surrounded by a pretty diverse, open minded, and eclectic group of people, and we appreciate each other's tastes...

One of my best friends, I met him when we both shared a love of Babyland and Squarepusher...

My girlfriend mainly likes jpop, jindie, and uh... I dunno, really melodic shit.. .but also loves stuff like Secret Chiefs 3, Mr. Bungle, Estradasphere, etc...

People who I know around here but don't associate with as much seem to be mainly into mainstream punk and hipster stuff (the Locust, Holy Molar, all that shit that was popular 5 years ago).. but I dunno, I only know a few people who are into My Chemical Romance and shit, and they're all like... 15 or 16 years old.

Death & the Maiden 07.03.2008 01:52 AM

Another friend says she's into different stuff and she doesn't listen to popular music, but her tastes seem very similar to everyone else's. Once I was talking about Sonic Youth with a friend, and she said "You're into Sonic Youth?" I said "Yes, are you?", but she wasn't really, she'd just heard one of their songs somewhere. Then she listened to Goo, but she didn't really like it. She said she was expanding her tastes.
She also likes to namedrop My Bloody Valentine - she'll be browsing through my iPod, and say "You like My Bloody Valentine?" and I'll ask her if she is, but she doesn't really know them.

atsonicpark 07.03.2008 01:54 AM

I dunno, I guess there just isn't much to do in this town and maybe that makes people more explorative regarding music, but everyone (you know, that's around my age) knows who Sonic Youth is around here and has actually listened to them, and most know MBV. Sure, my musical tastes have rubbed off on my girlfriend, but even before we dated she discovered MBV, Le Shok, Causey Way, old Butthole Surfers, and more on her own.

Allow me to risk a large amount of, if not all of my credibility on these boards and defend CYHSY. They have dastardly catchy tunes and a singer, who's voice nestles a soothing abrasion into the wise listener's ear.

I'd choose these guys ove rmany other bands in a heartbeat.

_slavo_ 07.03.2008 03:51 AM

My girlfriend listens to old jazz like Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker and the like, as well as portugese Fado music. Which I find kind of cool.

sarramkrop 07.03.2008 08:41 AM

Mostly appaling music.

MellySingsDoom 07.03.2008 08:51 AM

Some listen to "dance", some like a bit of rawk, one listens to a lot of jazz and classical. a couple of mine don't really listen to music, and the rest are shameless music geeks.

Yeah, I didn't even think about all my mates who don't like music at all.

batreleaser 07.03.2008 09:00 AM

HECKLER SPRAY 07.03.2008 09:10 AM

I never talk about music with my friends, our musical tastes are too different.
You know, I hate this kind of lame conversation :
when a friend ask you :
-"what 's your favourite band ?"
and you answer :
-"Oh, I'm pretty sure you don't know this band : Sonic Youth". Everytime, your pale says :
-"You're right, I don't know it, what does it sound like ?"
-"Well, indie-noisy rock, this kind of things."
-"Yeah, I see what you mean, like the Baby Shambles (or The Red Hot, Green Day, Oasis..), isn't it ?"
-"....... Not really. Skip it."

Pointless.

sarramkrop 07.03.2008 09:12 AM

Do you make lists of your favourite friends too? You know, like when people go ''Ooohhhh, you're in my top 3. I luuuuuurve youuuuu!''.

batreleaser 07.03.2008 09:14 AM

no, i dont

sarramkrop 07.03.2008 09:17 AM

What? And there was me thinking that you had Avant-Classical-Glitch mates that would get filed under 'overrated' after a few years. Oh well...

Florya 07.03.2008 09:23 AM

My friends listen to me.
That's why they're my friends.

I do the same for them.

i dunno about you sarramkrop, i just dont know.

Rob Instigator 07.03.2008 10:06 AM

Most of my friends listen to much of what I listen to.

a few are still very much into Iron maiden and Metal, and a couple are deep deep hip hop lovers

One listens to indie stuff, that is as he puts it "well-produced"

Most do not listen to heinious shit.

My girlfriend likes sade, amy winehouse, keisha cole, smiths, billy holliday, regina spektor, and anything that is sad and depressing.

Sonic Youth 37 07.03.2008 10:08 AM

99% of them listen to total crap except for stuff I've given them to listen to. The other 1% have excellent taste in music.

screamingskull 07.03.2008 11:17 AM

Mostly the same as me, but with less TMV and SY, and more Modest Mouse and Smashing Pumpkins.

I mean i like the smashing pumpkins, but not as much as most of my friends do.

Friends?

What a cute idea.

Glice 07.03.2008 12:13 PM

I know they read this from time-to-time, so it's only fair they get a degree of infamy - two of my band listen to loads of second-wave emo, Ani DiFranco (and other such whinging sows) and rubbish bleepy electronica. One of them is a big fan of Shania Twain's remix album.

A lot of my bredrin aren't that into music, so they listen to whatever's about. I've got a fair few who're into top 10 house. I know a fair few ravers, quite a few metallers/ hardcore types, a handful of classical sorts, a few world/ folk types, some radio 2 sorts (Celine Dion/ u2/ Lighthouse family)... my family is great, my Mum's well into country and Irish (which I've acquired), the old man's into oodles of rubbish rock, brother got me started on punk/ reggae when I was very young (most of which he and I can't stand now) and my sister's well into her gay proper pop (awesomeness).

Generally though, it's the musos and indie kids that I like to kick about with least. Which is strange, given how much of my time I spend here...

Danny Himself 07.03.2008 12:24 PM

One of my best friends is a metal guitar virtuoso and his favourite band is Slayer. Another good friend's hero is Tom Waits, but yet he also has an avid interest in heavy metal. Another friend I saved from listening to Prog Metal and she now listens to Daniel Johnston, Sonic Youth and Willy Mason.

One out of three ain't bad. I have a friend to talk to about Slayer, a friend to talk to about Tom Waits, and a friend to talk to about weird americans..

PAULYBEE2656 07.03.2008 12:29 PM

most of my friends have pretty much the same grounding in music as i do. we like different stuff to different degrees but no necesarrily the exact same but we are grown up enough to be akble to live with our differences.......

what a dull boring place it would be if everyone listened to the same music!

my best friend listens to a lot of riot grrl and post punk stuff. her favorite bands are bikini kill, love is all and madonna. my other best friend listens to mostly bob dylan and iron and wine type stuff.
