Meeting Sonic Youth
I thought i start a thread about meeting SY... I met them infront of Paradiso Amsterdam every year they play (unfortunatly they won't come this year).
The last time was 30 august of 2004, I was waiting with a friend of mine infront of Paradiso, I made a big painting (1 meter by 40 cm) (I don't know that in inches) Of Thurston Moore playing the guitar and out of the guitar I painted a lotta collors, suddenly the band walked by and I said: Hey Thurston, I got a present for you, he said: I will come to you in a minute. He kept his word and I gave him my painting and he loved it he even joked that he couldn't take it with him in the plane but he invited me backstage after the gig, my mate Rik Kaez gave him his own music (www.rikkaez.com) Thurston said that he received some nice things and we responded that it was his birthday, we all laughed and he went inside Paradiso again. Great concert and after that I had a few drinks with Sonic Youth. Great evening!!!! |

wow are you sure that you didnīt dream? |
I did not dream, it was all real!
|
i met thurston at this years SXSW. but all i could really say was "whoa! you're you!" i shook his hand, cried, then got him to do an ID for the radio station i work at.
that was a beautiful moment. |
I saw the tall one in the bookshop at the RFH before the 'legendary' Goodbye 20th Century gig in London. I decided I didn't have anything to say, so it was better not to make a dick of myself, and walked off to buy a delightful CD of music by, if memory serves, Morton Feldman.
|
i made a total dick of myself, but that's okay. it was worth it.
|
Yeah, at that point I was sober and all too aware of how many times in the previous year I had woken up regretting gushing at someone... for me it's usually better not to meet yr heros.
|
WTF?!!, Mildred Pierce you make me so jealous:confused:
I only have been close to thurston 2 months ago and thats all, and he was on stage, that makes me more jealous |
i'm feeling fairly envious... one day i'll have my turn. YOU'LL SEE
:fuckyou: |
Haven't met them yet, but I will be meeting them @ The Orange Peel show on June 17th. I even messaged Steve @ SY's myspace asking him if it would be alright to meet them after the show.
|
I hate you all. In an admirable sort of way.
|
I'm wicked jealous of Mildred Pierce too. The only thing I ever said to any member of the band was "sure" when Thurston excused himself as he squeezed by me to get to the stage. I was too nervous to say anything else. But then again anything else would be superfluous and unnecessary. I also had a chance to say something to Lee in Boston back in '04. He was walking around the audience while the opening band was playing their set (I think it was the Magik Markers again) and taking pictures. I just stood nect to him a couple feet way to his left and just stood their staring at him in a very nondiscreet way. Can you tell I haven't been around a lot of famous idols? I regret not saying anything. Even a simple "hey, how's it goin?" would have been something.
|
marley- damnit, if only i could go. my dad said "i'm not taking you anywhere near asheville".
|
Agghh, I'm sorry to hear that schizo. Well, the important thing is that you'll be getting to see them in general, aren't you?
|
I met Thurston, Kim, and Lee 2 years ago at concert in Glasgow, Scotland.
I met Thurston twice, actually. I was waiting outside the venue for SY to arrive for soundcheck. I was late, but Thurston was later. I see a cab pull up and he comes out, and seems to grow right in front of me. He's just tall. He was like an hour late so he couldn't stay. After the gig I waited around and met Thurston again, but I don't think he remembered me. He seemed drunk or something, talking to no-one in particular about the sex pistols. He signed my Daydream Nation. A while later, Kim and Lee came out and I talked to them and got my DDN signed. That was nice. I also talked to SY's bodyguard or something. He was a big black dude. Good times. |

Sounds like my experience meeting Thurston. |
According to the Wire article, "Or" is about how Thurston doesn't like when people can't think of anything to say except "When are you playing? How long are you touring?" Advice for those of you who will be lucky enough to meet them [again].

konxville 2000
we were all waiting in the back of the place and we could see them in the windows about 2 or 3 stories up walking around. at one point jim has an umbrella shaped like a frog so he stuck it out the window and twirled it for us. then a bit later some body guards(?) started to throw brocolis and brownies at us and yelling at us. latetia from stereolab felt bad for us so she hung out the window with some kind words and threw more food at us but more as an offering. then lee came out hoping to get into the bus immediately but hesitantly walked over to us. he was very nice tho and i got a pic with him! yeah i tend not to enjoy meeting my heros b/c the whole fanboy thing is really annoying. i got to meet nels cline in nashville on the watt engine room tour. we talked at the bar then he invited us backstage(a very tiny room to the left of the stage. we talked more and he even let me play his beloved 59 jazzmaster. he was very very nice and i of course was a total dork. |

i'm still not sure. i don't like pearl jam, so i really don't want to play 50 bucks to just see the yoof open for them. i want them as the headlining act, damnit. |
It is an amazing atmosphere when they're headlining. & especially in The Orange Peel. It just feels more like a gig than a "concert", because of it's small capacity & layout.
|
it was all whirlwind heat and flash. i had the chance to meet SY in 2005. we had hitched two days, hanged around teh next two days and all was like a freaking dream. they let us go backstage (thanks muge and all the nice ladies from kodmuzik) and the band came one by one to talk, sign stuff and take pics. thurston was tall and very cool. i was about to cry when i took pic with lee, it was so crazy. steve was very earth and cool dude. jim was kid shy. kim gordon, well, thats the lady! i will always rememer this dumb ass who gave her a bleach copy to sign. she looked at him like she is going to freeze him with her eyes, then asked 'do you like kurt cobain' and turned to me to signing my ticket. mr. ranaldo was very into my tattoo, he brought the whole band to come and see it. he said hes going to put a picture he took on the website, but obviously we dont have the pic sections.
great great great. |
I met them once.
We all went for Chocolate icecreams after the show. We had a blast! |
well, "meet" is not the proper word for me...
I'd rather say... stalk! I met for the first time lee 3-4 yrs ago after a text of light. I was so stoned that I shaked his shoulder very very strong that he looked me like"what the fuck are you doing?" then he asked me "where you at the show yesterday as well?" and I miserably answered: "in bologna (the town)? ..no." then Silenzio. he was walking with dj olive and tim barnes. it was fun cos there was a silent group of fans(that I abandoned few later) that followed them till the restaurant door. Another time in ferrara(italy), last summer, after the show I was in the square in front of the place more or less where thay played. They went eating and then, on the way to the hotel, I saw them. I ran to them and stopped kim because she was the last of the raw. she gave me the most serious look a human being can give to a person. I asked "do you like ferrara?(uuugh)" and she said "...yes..." in a whatever-like tone. I could have stayed there a little longer, but I ran away right after thurston looked for kim and turned. last time, in rome, after perfect partner show, I waited outside for kim. I felt stupid, cos it was me and a friend of mine, a bodyguard, Isabella Ferrari (an italian actress), Claudio Santamaria (italian actor), Massimo of Zu (who joined thurston and jim for original silence) and a friend of ikue mori. Paralysis... when kim came out, I moved to her, and she gave me the same serious look, this time also a little worried. I said"great show". she answered, of course "thanks" --->what I learnt: I'll talk and try to talk to sonic youth just if there will be some kind of reason apart of compliments, stupid questions, handshakes or autographs. I personally don't have good conversation skills... I don't work for any music mag... Maybe when I'll be doctor I'll be called backstage...this is the sad and only tangible dream I can have...who knows. |
SY member heartattack backstage doesnt sound good way to meet them
|
Yeah I've met them wanna fight about it?
To sum up Jim and Steve first- asked the dumb ass question to steve "what you playing tonight" and Jim was wearing massive (and I mean big glasses) "nice glasses" "thanks". God I was such a dork. Lee,Thurston and Kim- To Lee "....I don't wanna sound like a suck up but your new album kick ass" "Thanks". Kim "......" she seems,as said before like the ice queen. Thurston "........" "nice pen" "thanks". God I had so many things I wanted to say to them too. Next time i'll say something decent. |
when SY came to istanbul a year ago, one day before the gig the promoters held a warming up party at a sleazy, yet expensive bar .. the buzz was SY was going to attend..
now i've been a fan for 15 years, and this was going to be my first ever sonic youth concert.. my wife was kind enough to buy me tickets - she earns more money than i do - and she also took me to the party.. no one actually believed they'd show up.. we were the first people in there, and i drank a lot of beer while chanting "play some sonic youth" (they didn't).. about 2 hours passed, the place filled up with semi-fans, pretentitous art types, trendy yuppies, professional drunks and about 15 real fans.. shentov was there, we had pm'ed later on on the old board.. then suddenly, i turned to a 16 year old girl at a beatles concert circa 1966.. not really.. but, man was i excited.. i started shouting out to lee, then for thurston.. my wife later commented that i had an aggressive aura, and i probably was a little intimidating.. the guys didn't know what to do at that stage.. thurston headed for the bar, got a beer and instantly found himself overwhelmed by groupies.. (for the lack of a better word..) lee just sort of walked by my way, and stood in front of me.. i tried to collect myself as much as i can.. i shook his hand.. told him i'd been waiting for that day for a very long time.. some babble about my youth.. lee was kind and cool, and listened to me with genuine interest.. afterall, this was the first time for SY to come to istanbul as well.. lee then asked of my wife, who was silently standing next to me, holding my hand.. i'd neglected her, and introduced the two.. a lot "my hero" et cetera were pronounced by then.. i gave a copy of the magazine that i produce - self-published xerox culture thingy called PORNAViDA, and lee thanked me gently.. we saw him later with the magazine tucked in his back pocket.. wow! kim was cold, and my wife asked her about coco.. kim replied dryly, "coco has school.." how anti-rock 'n roll is that.. how cool is that..? steve had gone into the dj booth, looking for some decent music - he failed.. jim was hanging arund kim most of the timei and everyone wanted their photos taken with them, so i moved away.. and thurston.. as i've said, he was at the bar with a beer in his hand, people flooding him.. i have mild agoraphobia, so i wasn't too keen on diving in there.. my wife took me by my hand, and dragged me right in.. she started talking to thurston, and she intoduced me.. "and thurston, by the way, this is my husband..!" thurston was cool.. i said the same things - not quite intelligent, half drunk and too excited guy babbling - and he was pretty cool about the whole affair.. overall impression of sonic youth from a long time fan.. thurston --> the indie superstar lee --> the cool guy steve --> sorry, but kind of geeky, and very polite kim --> scary, cold, but definitely not rude i kinda overlooked jim.. i got all their autographs on the gig poster.. the following day, we were the first in line for the concert.. as we were goofing around killing time, a car stopped in front of us and steve got out.. he recognized us from the night before, and chatted with us for a while.. "are you guys the first in line?" yeah, man.. always... |
That sounds like a cool story, man. I keep hearing that Kim is rather removed form people. Like she doesnt really want to talk to people.

Briliant story man. Next time I see them I will say something half decent. Quote:
My thoughts too. |
thanks man..
i think SY are real cool and down-to-earth guys, and given the chance, they are very patient with fans.. one feels close to them via music, a very personal experience in itself, and once they are in front of you, you don't know what to say.. the catch is - you know them, but they don't have an idea about you.. they are mature enough to listen to what you have to say, and that makes the experience of meeting them in person more embarrassing.. we should talk music, dreams and aspirations, and yes, sometimes just scream like a 16 year old girl at a beatles concert in 1966.. |
well, I think if I'll ever meet them, I'll just say thanx for the beautiful years of music. something like that.
|
please don't be jealous you all, I met the band the year before as well....sorry
I guess they like the Netherlands. |

|
i had my jagstang( guitar) signed by thurston after a show in Nantes ( 1999) , france.... you can imagine my happyness since that day...
